Kombucha Tea

By in 18: Greater LA

My friend gave me a Kombucha mushroom and a how-to brew it yourself instructions. Not a fan of the market ones (see old post), I was surprised how tasty my friend made them. Hers taste like Sparkling yogurt drink! Not acidic nor overtly vinegar-ly like the market one. So I’m determined to try it on my own.

One of the hardest part is looking for a glass jar that can hold one gallon of distilled water. The mushroom and the solution cannot touch any ceramics nor metal. The giant $11 kim-chee jar you can find at market is the perfect size (though we have a gallon of strong smelling kim-chee at the fridge that turn sour way too soon). The mushroom she gave me was a baby one grew out of the ones she used (and frankly it looked like a strange alien jellyfish ^^;;). After 2 weeks of fermentation, the baby mushroom grow so big and a new baby one was attached to it.

DSC03534.jpgYou drink them every morning before any meal (and night, but I used a caffeine tea that’d keep me awake all night if I drink passed 6pm). I feel my body “cleanse” effortlessly every morning. The mushroom can be reused 5 more times. Now that I got a new baby mushroom, I can keep on brewing multiple batches.

Hi Joe and anony, my friend got the kombucha mushroom from this website: http://www.organic-kombucha.com/.
The ordering info is under “culture starter kit”. There’re different kits you can get, some comes with the jar, tea…etc. But all you really need is the mushroom and you can get the other stuffs on your own (i.e. distill water, organic pure cane sugar, organic red/black tea, cheese cloth). Though the complete starter kit makes it easier.

The glass pitchers were from a Korea market at “Koreatown plaza” (928 S. Western Ave), $9-10 each.

Oh it doesn’t look so gross as it sounds. ^^;;; You really feel healthier drinking it everyday?

Yeah, every morning after I drink it I would go to bathroom very at ease and quick (not in a stomach ache/bad stomach way), just ‘effortless”~~ feel so good! 😀
