Wondertoonel: Mark Ryden Show

Collection

DSC03529s.jpgDSC03531s.jpgDSC03530s.jpgAll these times I was studying at Artcenter I never knew the existence of this museum. ^^;; Pasadena Museum of California Art has a retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Mark Ryden called "Wondertoonel" that ended two weeks ago. The painting on the left is his latest work from 2005. His paintings are full of motifs of innocence (children, bunny, dolls) in a childlike cotton candy colored sinister world of mysteries, loaded with cultural, religion and political symbols. I love them, it's amazing to see his works in huge scale all at once in a gallery space. Also you can see as years progress, his paintings get more luscious, rich and colors are less pop and bright. Just from art books you can't appreciate the detailed, motifs-loaded frames as part of the painting. I read before that he had the frames custom-made in Thailand. Mark Ryden was a fellow Artcenter alumni, his works (along with Clayton brothers') has been a popular inspiration for many Artcenter students to imitate in recent years.

haha they're the crowd who dig the retro vintage toys and stuffs. They're just nostalgic and kitschy = cool! XD I like Mark Ryden more than Claytons, Clayton's paintings are grotesque while Mark Ryden's are cuter, and i like his refined perfect renaissance classical painting style.

the first painting reminded of the Mona Lisa, and the red robot in the last painting is kind of similar to the claytons'. I remember when I was taking robert clayton's class, all he painted was boxy robots and nothing else.
