  1. Went to see Phantom of the Opera…..god, it is sooooo bad…..I used to be so obsessed with the musical and it is saddening to see its movie adaption being nothing more than a “badly-done 2-hr-long low-budget MTV”. I don’t even know where to start my complaints~~~~~ Sigh~~~~I thought something is wrong in the first 15 minutes already, when the main theme of Phantom – which is very powerful and is only played during crucial moments in the actual musical – is played when a dirty old backstage worker is looking funny on screen……..and it only got worse from there. I mean, when you are watching the musical, you are in a gorgeous theatre, a gorgeous stage, well-arranged lighting, and most importantly a live orchestra and real people dancing and acting and singing their lungs out right in front of you, the atmosphere is complete to absorb you and make you completely involved, the impact is powerful; say, simply a single guy/girl standing and doing nothing else and just singing for 10 minutes on stage, can take your breath away. That is the impact of a real stage. But cinema is different ma!! How can you tranform a stage musical into a 2D format just by “copy & paste”?!! The singing comes out from the loudspeakers of the cinema, which already loses 90% of the impact, and the actors/actresses just look angst and tragic for the duration of all the songs, practically a super super long MTV!! Not to mention the acting is terrible…..I had goose-pimple all the way! Like the most entrancingly beautiful scene when the Phantom took Christine to his labyrinthe, when the stage would turn into a canal with real water and a real boat floating along and candles on the side, it is breathtaking when it is on a stage, but it loses all its magic when you see it on screen, especially with the Phantom’s close-up clearly visible and obviously human with half a Lancome facial mask stuck onto his face……followed by Christine’s entranced face frozen for 10 mintues….it is just unbearable!! I haven’t expected it to be so “faithful” to the original, I mean there are other musicals on screens that can be fun, but that usually involves more dancing, more talking, more story-telling, combined to make it entertaining even on a 2D screen, but for Phantom the story is simple, of course not that much dancing, each song is not really for storytelling, but pure enjoyment of the song itself, so I had expected the movie version would not be “exactly” like the musical, but more elaborate on the story side, more drama, I don’t know how it could be done but I thought the producer would have figured it out….obviously not. The problem I have is not only on its method of adaption, but the directing itself. So many awkward scenes, awkward panning, the masquerade is so poorly done(like everything else)~~~~ So few people in the party!!!(probably fewer than the musical which is limited by stage space). Come on, it is a movie not a TV show ma~~~ And many minor things that nonetheless bugged me, like the graveyard scene at the end, one second the snow and gravestones would be white and bluish, but the next picture of the same place same moment would suddenly become white and yellow……feels so amateur you know?? Anyway, I can’t believe I bashed so long….^^;;;;

  2. oh gosh it’s really that bad!? I’m not surprise at all actually…since the director is the dreadful Joel Schumacher (who responsible for destroying the Batman franchise with the god awful batman 3+4 plus many other cheesy film). The trailer looks nice that gave me a little hope that he might actually do a good job in this one, but guess not! The review in general is very bad too. Ah……damn….RP just called me yesterday and we’re going to see it later today…damn damn….what should I do, may be I can convince her to see another film instead…^^;;;;

  3. We did end up seeing another film, “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”! and it’s grreeaatt! I love it very much~~~ I’ll post detail review later.

  4. Ahahahaha~~~~yeah, it could have been worse~~~~but I will still remember not to watch Joel Schumacher’s films ever again!
