生湯葉わさび。Yuba with wasabi, or squid with spicy sauce. I never realised tofu by itself can be this sweet! Very nice with wasabi and soya sauce.

いなか蕎麦。Inaka soba. Oh god this is soooooo nice!!! Very hard and very buckwheaty - just the way I like! There are soba places everywhere but good ones really leave strong impression. Definitely will go back again and again!

Second visit. I ordered the same inaka soba, but in large portion and version-up with tororo. Heaven!!

Third visit. Anago soba is seasonal menu. Sesame seeds are sprinkled on top, so good so good!

UCHOUTEN

060126 038.jpg黒毛和牛のメンチカツ。Minced beef croquette and seafood cream croquette. Lunch set came with the usual - rice, soup, salad and coffee, 1080yen. The beef one was very juicy and the seafood one actually had chunks of seafood inside despite of its small size. Both were freshly fried so had to wait for quite a bit.

060125 016.jpgちゃんこ鍋。A hotpot with chicken and pork and seafood and vegetables. 1890yen for one person set during lunch time. The soup is soya sauce base. I was given a bowl of sesame seeds to grind myself and a small dish of “yuzu” pepper paste…and no bowl to eat. The waitor said I should scoop the cooked ingredient and the soup into the bowl of sesame and eat from there…..but that is too much sesame! So I just chucked the whole plate of raw ingredients, the sesame, and the “yuzu” pepper paste into the hotpot….it was very good!! Though I really craved rice!!

060122 079.jpg3 girls dining out. First I completely forgot to bring the restaurant’s address and the map, and then a friend completely forgot about the time because she was busy cleaning her room at home…..and then the other friend, who was not late and did remember to write down the address, copied the address wrong and we got completely lost….^^;;….but somehow we got ourselves there in one piece. I had Sangria(not shown) and Grapefruit Vermouth(rosso) which is a herb liqueur. Both were very nice. Ginger ale had fresh ginger taste and was surprisingly good too.

060122 001.jpg060122 014.jpg
Pork rillette and squid ink baguette. Came without ordering, 500yen per person. My friend said the rillette tasted like canned sea chicken….err….^^;;;
Mixed grilled vegetables of the day. The waitor was very insistent, to the point of annoying, on recommending us this other fresh salad and dips, but I don’t like raw vegetables so we ordered grilled veggy instead. The vegetables were fresh and sweet. It came with 2 types of warm dressings and some flavoured salt.

060122 020.jpg060122 025.jpg
We ordered 4 different types of pasta and shared between 3 of us. The restaurant beefed up the portion of each dish(with a plus charge), and divided the pasta for us and served us one dish by one dish, which was just great. The photos are my share.
100% fruit tomato Troffie Arrabbiata. The very pushy waitor was again recommending this simple pasta and at first we didn’t want it and ordered something else, but he mentioned it again and again, saying stuff like “You are not ordering the Arrabbiata?” I totally gave up and my friends were laughing, so we ordered it at the end. Well, it was very good….hate to admit it. ^^;; I like the noodles shape and the chewy texture.
Conchigliette and 5 clams, escargot butter sauce. Again very very yummy! Not sure I tasted any escargot though.

060122 042.jpg060122 043.jpg
Black pepper garganelli with andeuillette and black cabbage. The pasta was a bit out of shape, not so shell-like, but tasted wonderful. There were more meat and vegetables than pasta…a bit more pasta would be more balanced.
Stewed wild boar with spinach tortellini of ricotta cheese and walnut. The sauce was rich, a bit salty and again lots of meat and mushroom and purple potato chips…but the only two tortellinis were no good….We came to a consensus that normal spaghetti would go better with the sauce.
They seemed to be very generous with the ingredients and the sauce, but rather stingy on the pasta…..girl-oriented low-carb style?

Strawberry panna cotta and “yuzu” baked cheese cake. I love the panna cotta!
We had 2 drinks each, and the bill came to 20,000yen. It was quite expensive, considering we didn’t even order any meat dishes. But this area is like all trendy and hip, probably that’s why?

Mardi Gras

060121 010.jpg060121 013.jpg

060121 014.jpgThis place is again very popular and very hard to book - somehow I always go to this kind of restaurants. ^^; The most tempting thing that I read about this place is that the food is supposed to be very “macho”, mostly meat and large portions and great values. Some gourmet review called it “guys’ french”. The chef said something like, “I have no interest in anything other than meat”. So I was really keeping my expectations up….
Foccacia and tortilla. The foccacia was a bit too oily but quite nice. The Spanish omelette was served warm, very good too. Look at the big plate of stuff for 4, before we even ordered anything. “Let’s not order too much otherwise we won’t be able to finish”, “2 appetizers and 2 main dishes would be enough”, were what we thought. But then the first appetizer came….Coriander salad. My god it is so small!! It is quite nice but 1370 yen is not so worth it. Then the second appetizer came….Fried Trippa. It is not bad but very oily and the portion is so small again.

060121 015.jpg060121 021.jpg
We chose roasted lamb and roasted pork to share. By that time we were giving up on the portion side, so when the main dishes came, which were not as big as we would like, we just tried to enjoy our share from each plate. The quality of meat was fanastic, no doubt of that, but each main dish costs over 3000 yen….and the one little piece doesn’t make an impression on me no matter how good it is. ^^;;

060121 029.jpg060121 026.jpg
I was not full at all!! But we ordered 2 more rounds of foccacia, which was oily and filling. For desserts we ordered 2 Mascarbone cheese and Grand Marnier and coffee parfaits and 2 banana and raisins tarts. I had the parfait which was really nice, also small. We had a drink each and it came to 5600 yen per person - not a very good deal I think. But the taste was good, and I had a good time so, oh well.

This restaurant is very popular and difficult to book. I booked it like a month early…before I went back to HK. But actually it wasn’t completely full on a weekday lunch. There were 3 different lunch courses and we chose the most reasonably priced, 4725yen course. The restaurant is dauntingly high-class….there was a doorman to open the door for us…took our coats and all. I was kinda timid about taking pictures in such a place but my friend was nice enough to ask the waitor for me about taking pictures of the food, and the waitor said it was okay. Even though the restaurant has quite a snobby atmosphere, the waitors are certainly not snobby at all. And it turns out the alcohol drinks are not too expensive either.
The little snacks are ham and fish.
Appetizer: Marinated seabass. Very refreshing.
活〆スズキのマリネ、ポリフェノール仕立て。

060120 043.jpgDuck consomme soup, with winter vegetables and foie gras royale. Some foie gras mousse thing is under the soup. It is alright, not too much impression.
鴨のコンソメと冬野菜・フォアグラのロワイヤル。

060120 044.jpg060120 048.jpg
Main: Pie of gibier pate. The sauce is made from venison, both meat and blood. The pie was really nice but I thought the sauce was a bit too heavy and salty, especially the spinach was drenched in it.

060120 056.jpg060120 059.jpg
Rose and strawberry. Little dessert before the main dessert.
Pear and “verveine” mille-feuille. Dunno what verveine is. Very crispy slices, not too sweet, very nice! The ice-cream is ginger flavour.
洋ナシとベルベーヌのミルフィーユ。

060120 063.jpgThen when I thought it was over, a wagon of desserts came to our table. At first I thought it was extra order but my friend told me it was included in the lunch course! You could choose as many as you want from the selection, about 10 of them, but considering my stomach condition, I just had three. I was glad that I had only 3, because there were really sweet. My friend treated me a glass of champagne~~and I only paid for the course itself, about 5500yen including tax and service change.
