丸香 (Maruka)

07040900070704090008
月見山、¥500。おむすび、¥120。
Tsukimi-yama: cold udon with raw egg and grated yamaimo. Nice sanuki udon with chewy and solid texture. In my first visit, I didn’t expect the tsuyu sauce for the udon to be that salty and I added too much without tasting it first….it was my fault but the waitress was kind enough to change the whole thing for me. Considering it was packed at lunch time, service was friendly!
Omusubi: rice ball cooked with the water used to boil the udon.

Curry udon(winter menu) and vegetable tempura.

釜たま+かしわ天、¥680。肉うどん+とりめし、¥945。
Kama-tama: hot udon with egg. Kashiwa-ten: chicken tempura.
Niku-udon: udon with pork. Tori-meshi: rice cooked with chicken. Niku-udon and Tori-meshi are Saturday-only menu.

かけ(大)、丸天、げそ天、¥785。
Kake: udon with hot soup. Maruten: Satsuma-age with squid in it. Geso-ten: octopus leg tempura.

ぶっかけうどん、えび天、¥730。釜揚げ、¥470。
Bukkake udon. Ebi-ten(on the side). The staff told me Ebi-ten is kamaboko with “whole shrimp” in it, but I didn’t expect it to mean “whole shrimp with shell and head and everything”. Not used to eating shrimp’s shell….
Kama-age: hot udon to eat with warm dipping sauce.
08051200010805300030
釜玉山、ごぼ天、¥730。 つけ、鯛ちく天(磯辺揚げ)、¥570。
Kama-tama-yama: Hot udon with raw egg and grated yamaimo - this is my favourite! Gobo-ten: I thought it was tempura of gobo(burdock root) but it was actually a cold kamaboko with gobo inside.
Tsuke: cold udon to eat with cold dipping sauce. Tai Chiku-ten: chikuwa tempura. The fish used is “Tai”.

As common for this kind of cheap udon places, the tempura are not made on order - only if you are lucky that your tempura will come hot. Once I tried asking the staff “Can you bring me whatever tempura that are just fried and still hot?” and she said she couldn’t do that. ^^;;; From what I have tried, the vegetable tempura was hot, octopus leg tempura and Tai chiku-ten were warm, but the chicken tempura was already cold and didn’t taste so good. There is always queue at lunch time and you will usually have to share the huge long tables with strangers.

Tai chatsuke(rice in tea broth).

3500yen lunch including a two-layered bento, Tai Chatuske, two side dishes and a dessert. You can order the bento and Tai Chatsuke on its own for 2500yen and 1500yen respectively. Reservation is absolutely necessary - you need to decide what to order when you reserve. There are about 10 counter seats(where we sat), and a few private rooms inside. The counter seats are a bit cramped and I couldn’t see much of what the chef was doing anyway so the private rooms might be a better idea. When we arrived at around 12 noon, the first round of customers were just leaving…which means that they must have started around 11:30am when the restaurant just opened and finished in 30 mins? Maybe they just had the Tai-chatsuke. The restaurant was fully booked from 12 and when we were leaving at around 2pm, the third round of customers started to come….seems like the rather obscure location doesn’t dampen its popularity.

The food is absolutely delicious. Surprisingly strong seasoning for its Kyoto origin - but not overly strong. The highlight is definitely the Tai Chatsuke. First you eat some rice with the tai sashimi and the sesame seed sauce(made with nuts too), and then you pour the tea to make chatsuke. The sesame seed sauce is quite salty so pour a bit at a time. The thick slices of Tai are fresh and delicious to be eaten as sashimi, but when they are slightly cooked by the hot tea and eaten with rice and the sauce, they are even more heavenly. Rice is refillable.

天ぷら 深町(Tempura Fukamachi)

08031200300803120034
特製かき揚天丼、¥2100。

Tempura restaurant which is quite expensive at night, but at lunch time, other than the tempura set(tempura and rice come separately) and tempura full courses with prices ranging from 5000yen to 7000yen, a more purse-friendly option of 2100yen kakiage-tendon(very delicious) is also available. The content of the tendon changes with seasons - when we went there were asparagus, soramame, small prawn, scallop etc. in it. The chef used to work in the famous tempura restaurant in Yamonoue hotel which I have tried before and is a big fan. Reservation at lunch is only possible if you order the more expensive set/course. I went without reservation on a weekday, arriving at around 12:30pm and it wasn’t so full. But while we were eating people kept coming in and just before 13pm, the place was packed. It is a small restaurant with mainly counter seats but there are also two tables for two.

Pork fricassée. Belgium Chicory(Belgian Endive) gratin. Chocolate terrine.

I’m not a big fan of beer but I have a soft spot for Belgium beer, especially those with fruity flavours. This Belgium pub has an extensive menu of imported beer with prices ranging from 900yen to over 2000yen per glass(pretty small glass). Food menu is surprisingly decent for a pub - most of the stuff we ordered turned out to be quite okay. Value for money varies from item to item - the stomach-filling pita bread sandwich is the same price as the pickles!

Rice bowl with marinated duck. Shiro-choco: hot matcha with white chocolate.
A cute cafe in Akihabara offering a variety of rice bowls and drinks made from matcha and soy milk. The food is of simple, cafe quality and the portion is quite small. Though the price is cheap and it seems to be very popular with OLs and salarymen.

Omurice Manso-style. Tastes okay.
The famous “Hotcake”. This place has been making hotcakes for the past 70 years apparently. It is crispy on the outside and tasty enough, but I think I prefer it to be a littlle softer.

Marron and Dainagon red bean parfait. Has matcha and vanilla ice-cream, fresh fruits and cream. A bit nothing-special for 1365yen.
Fruit sandwich. Quite a heavy layer of cream but fortunately it is not sweetened and there is a lot of fruits in the sandwich. The bread is not so great but overall the sandwich is quite good. You can buy this fruit sandwich as take-out for slightly cheaper price from the shop on the ground floor.

フルーツオムレツ、1260円。白桃のフレッシュパフェ、1470円。
Fruit omelette. It is basically a massive souffle, wrapped in a thin layer of crepe, HOT from the oven. The egg smells great and the texture very soft! So soft that in fact there is not that much substance in that volume. ^^;; Very good though. Peach parfait is not bad, there are small slices of peach stuffed between vanilla ice-cream and raspberry sorbet. The ice-cream and the raspberry sauce are a bit too sweet though. btw I didn’t eat both at one time, had the parfait first and saw other customers ordering the omelette and drooled, so went back the next day to try.

Tan Tan noodles, with sauce or without sauce. I had the one without soup at the original restaurant before(see tag), so I tried the one with soup. I like the one with soup better. The portion of the noodles is smaller for each person as we shared, so I could finish and enjoy it before getting tired of the taste.
08022300680802230069
Almond pudding. Black sesame dumplings.

The food is spicy but is actually okay. Other than the non-spicy dishes, every dish is seasoned with Szechuan pepper. I like mapo tofu, steamed chicken, fried prawn and pork in spicy sauce(you can choose beef or chicken too). I think the food is not bad, and the price is reasonable for Tokyo. But I can’t help feeling that Chinese food ought to be more generous with ingredients and cheaper…
