Fussa (福生)

A day trip to a place called Fussa where the Yokota Air Base is located - hence slightly Americanized. Somehow we didn’t see any foreigners on the day we went.

La Fougasse (ラ・フーガス)
First we went to this famous bakery, used to be in Tokyo but have moved here, and bought loads of bread before heading for lunch.

We drove to Ome and walked around the streets with a retro feel(great review here). The billboards of old Japanese movies are actually newly painted. Passed by Tama River. There were people fishing.

The chicken might not be the best quality I have had but really good for the price. This dinner was so cheap that at first I thought the price on the bill was for one person(turned out it was the total for four ^^;;).
Menu(J): 1, 2, 3.

(Konya)

08020901140802090117
This izakaya is opened by four chefs who all own their own restaurants in the same area. Though not them but someone else is cooking in this place. The front door looks like someone’s apartment! It was a dinner party and we had the 4000yen dinner course, plus endless additional orders from the a la carte menu cos we were all pigs. Buri and radish is complimentary appetizer.

Fried rice with “shutou”(salted bonito guts). Dessert from the course: gateau chocolat and Yuzu Daifuku.

The food is generally good in a standard izakaya sort of way. A bit salty to keep you drinking. Maybe not a reliable reference since I went with a huge group but (a lot of) food+drink is about 8000yen.

(Niku no Mansei)

07090900800709090043
Whole buliding of restaurants belonging to the same company. Generally, the price goes up as you go up each floor(with the exception of second floor which is a newly opened steakhouse). Ramen, cafe, izakaya, yoshoku, steak house, yakiniku, shabushabu, sukiyaki, teppanyaki…all with a single theme - meat.

The lower floors are basically “family restaurants”. In Japan, family restaurants mean that they serve a variety of Western, Chinese and Japanese dishes so that all family members will be pleased, and the price is supposed to be reasonable. I think this place provides better food than most of the family restaurants I’ve tried in Tokyo, and it has better environment(nice views, clean, comfortably spacious) and better service(every single staff is attentive and polite).

Not that the food here is fantastic(^^;;) and it certainly is not worth a special trip just to eat here, but if you happen to be in Akihabara and have difficulties finding a cheap and comfortable place to eat, especially on holidays, Mansei is not bad an option.

The menus for weekdays and weekends are slightly different, e.g. some of the cheapest options are not in the weekend menu, but the menus are displayed outside the entrance of each floor so you can check them out first.

SEVENTH FLOOR SUKIYAKI & SHABU-SHABU
08041300050804200007
Roasted beef and sashimi rice bowl.
08041300090804200005
Mixed fry set lunch.
Since I was not going to eat shabu-shabu and sukiyaki for lunch by myself, I opted for other items on the menu…which unfortunately were not good.
Menu: 1, 2.

FIFTH FLOOR YAKINIKU
08042700110804270012
Wagyu karubi lunch. The beef is a mix of different quality. The additional order of karubi(480yen) is fattier and juicier though.
08050300190805030017
Bibimbap is not bad.
Menu 1, 2.

THIRD & FOURTH FLOOR YOSHOKU
08013000190801300021
Seats by the window over-looking the main street of Akihabara.
07092400070709240019
Miso-marinated Wagyu steak lunch. Comes with rice(refillable as usual) and Tonjiru.
08022100070803210046
Two weekday-only lunch sets:
Hamburger, stir-fried pork and bamboo shoot in oyster sauce. The stir-fry is a bit greasy but 890yen is good value.
Hamburger and “coin croquette” lunch. Hamburger never goes wrong.
08032200570803220066
Steak lunch. Just okay. A bit hard.
Shiratama Kinako softcream - watery and very small.
08013000070801300008
Beef stew. Plus rice, corn potage and salad, the bill came up to 2370yen. Hmm the quality is not worth the price.
3rd and 4th floor menu(J): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
Dessert menu here.

SECOND FLOOR STEAKHOUSE
08032300070803230015

08032300050805150029
200g loin steak. Comes with a big salad(either Italian dressing or Thousand Island), bread or rice, and coffee. Bread is refillable and is reheated everytime. Also you can ask for wasabi(two different kinds) for free - wasabi on steak is actually very nice. The set is 3200yen at lunch but 3700yen at dinner. This is the most expensive menu I tried in Mansei. Luckily the quality of the beef doesn’t disappoint - meat is very soft and juicy. Not the shimofuri(”marbled with layers of fat”) kind but lean meat.
2nd floor holiday lunch menu here.
08051500150805150022
Cheaper option “cut steak” is available during weekday lunchtime, which is basically the edges leftover from trimming a steak. Somehow the quality of the meat is not as good as the more expensive whole steak, but I think it is good for the price. All the staff in Mansei are very attentive but this floor’s service is exceptionally good. Smoking is allowed here but you can ask to sit in a small room separated from the main dining.
08052800140805150019
Double mini Filet steak. This is a cheaper version of Filet steak available on weekday lunchtime only. Very tender very nice!

All cheaper weekday lunch options are limited and they run out quite quickly.
Menu 1, 2.

FIRST FLOOR COFFEE SHOP
08011301360801130133
Hamburger Hayashi. Hamburger is good but Hayashi sauce is not.
08030300040803030005
Corn potage. Beef curry rice(quite bad).
08030400150803040017

Katsu-sando(pork cutlet sandwich). Large-size and with salad, 750yen. The sandwich is pre-made - the cutlet not freshly deep-fried, but only reheated before serving. There is already sauce on the pork cutlet which inevitably makes the crust soggy but katsu-sando is always like this. You can also buy take-out. The mocha coffee is 500yen and if you order it with the set, it is 400yen - still very expensive for a small cup of diluted coffee…
1st floor coffee shop menu(J): 1, 2, 3.

FIRST FLOOR RAMEN SHOP
07090900680709090065

07090900540709090056
“Paigu”(fried pork rib) ramen with garlic and seasoned egg.
08012000010803020048
Premium Paigu ramen, with fried chicken leg and stir-fried vegetable toppings.
Apparently the Paigu is famous but it is too salty for me. The Premium has less fat than the regular Paigu but I find fatless pork too dry and hard. The soup and the ramen are just ordinary.
1st floor ramen shop menu(J): 1, 2, 3, 4.

BASEMENT
07091700070803310028
Fried chicken and pork ginger.
07091700080709170011
Katsu(fried pork) curry rice. The fried pork is okay but the curry tastes like those instant boil-in-the-bag supermarket type…don’t order curry in Mansei.
08033100250805030021
Basement menu(J): 1, 2, 3.

My recommendation for lunch: go for the cheapest items on 3rd & 4th floor Yoshoku, or pay a bit more and have a nice steak on the 2nd floor steakhouse.

Le Bonheur (ル ボヌール)

08032500110803250014
A newly opened French restaurant near Yoyogi Park. From the 6000yen dinner course.
Amuse: warm tart with Iberico ham and cèpe mushroom. The warm homemade bread is tiny but refillable. So good that I had about 5 of them….
08032500180803250023
The uni(sea urchin) cocktail is recommended in a few blog reviews and I was really happy that it happened to be included in the dinner course(If you order it from the a la carte menu, it is 2500yen - but in that case the size will be bigger). It is so pretty and with an exquisite taste to match. Would have been perfect if it weren’t for the unnecessary scrambled egg in the middle layer which is a bit too sweet and dominating. The lobster sauce, Kyoto carrot mousse, consomme jelly, 3 different layers made from uni, caviar and hojisho(Japanese Perilla) on top, are still amazing and overall an appetizer to die for. Side view here.
Medai(Japanese butter-fish) in shellfish sauce. A bit salty but very good.
08032500290803250035
Roasted duck breast in fig sauce, and duck confit with salad. Not impressive but still tasty. The meat is soft and tender. Comes with foie gras on a spoon.
08032500360803250041
There were four of us and we had 4 different desserts to share around.
Yuzu Blanc Manger. Warn apple tart with herb ice-cream(good!).
08032500440803250045
Warm chocolat terrine sandwiched with banana(good!). Strawberry parfait.
08032500510803250048

0803250009Herb tea and Petit fours(a bit oily).

Overall the food is of high quality. We were pleasantly surprised that the 6000yen includes service charge and tax. Unfortunately the staff who served us was a bit pushy, like he must have come to urge us to order more drinks for 5-6 times, even before we finished the ones we were having. My friends don’t have high tolerance for alcohol and we all have already ordered 1-2 drinks(non-alcohol cocktails included) each, yet he would say stuff like “You guys really don’t drink that much” and made us feel really bad. But then they gave us a lot of special service like, one of my friends who arrived at the restaurant very early, was served a free rose champagne while she was waiting. Instead of a second appetizer included in the 6000yen course, we were served a fish main dish instead. The same pushy staff kept giving us bread before we had to ask for it. So I guess if you open bottles of wine then you won’t be bugged so much and will have no problems with the service. ^^;;

Kurobuta pork(menu) loin tonkatsu with miso. Tonjiru. I tried the standard Miso-katsu some years ago which comes in a hotplate with miso sauce already added on top of the Katsu. This time I have some special menu using kurobuta pork from Kagoshima, and the miso sauce comes separately. The pork is really quite nice and the coating, not being soaked in sauces, is very crispy. But then I guess it is not as unique as the signature dish.

Maruichi Bagel@Yoyogi-Uehara

08030700290803070032

0803070028Absolutely amazing bagels! Apparently it is so popular among bagel fans that on weekends, a queue will start to form before the shop opens at 11am and the bagels often get sold out early in the afternoon. I tried my luck on a weekday when I happened to be in the neighbourhood. I only managed to get there by 1:30pm but there were 9 different kinds of bagels available and no one was waiting. Though when I left, people started to queue….I think I was just lucky. Each person can only buy up to 10 bagels. Price of the bagels ranges from 180yen to 250yen each. A bit expensive for just bagels but they are very big and very solid. You can order bagel sandwiches too - 600yen for two choices of filling. I had potato salad filling for half of the bagel, and pumpkin salad for the other half. The shop is so tiny and has no cafe space so I had to take-out the sandwich and ate somewhere else. Very delicious sandwich but the bagel was not toasted. Later I toasted the rest of the bagels at home and they were much much nicer.
