I really don't know if non-Japanese speakers would have problems here since I always use Japanese...I saw a foreigner in Ginza Toyoda when I went for lunch, he was accompanied by a Japanese but the chef did smile very friendlily to him so at least foreigners seem welcomed here. The best is probably to get your Japanese hotel receptionist to book the seats for you and inform the restaurant about what you cannot eat. Most washoku places have only "omakase"(chef's choice) course so you don't have to choose from the menu. Ginza Toyoda has two lunch courses, 5000yen and 7000yen. I haven't actually been to that many washoku places but among those I have tried, "Kasumicho Suetomi" offers lunch that is fantastic in value(though the restaurant is tiny) and "Aoyama Esaki" is in great location(near Omotesando). For dinner, maybe you can try "Ginza Kojyu".

Any chance that non-Japanese speakers can eat comfortably here? I will be visiting Tokyo soon, but I haven't decided what washoku places I should visit yet. Any recommendations?
