Instead of liver, which is included in the course but one of us can’t eat, we had chicken skin, again either with tare sauce or with salt.

The quality of chicken is good and everything is grilled perfectly. You get so much food for 4500 yen - each yakitori skewer is quite big and there are 9 of them in the course excluding the veggy. Though I really think they make everything too salty, especially for people like me who can’t drink that much. Also the course is really just yakitori after yakitori and I did get a bit tired towards the end. I wish there were some rice/noodles at the end. In retrospect, we really should’ve ordered plain rice to eat with the yakitori. Having said that I do like the food here.
Dinner menu(J) here.

Came back for lunch. Yakitori rice bowl, Y1050. It is nice too but I think for lunch, Isehiro(which is right next door to Eiichi) is better.

赤寶亭 (Sekihoutei)

From 5250yen lunch course. Umeshu(Sour plum wine) included in the course. Fig with goma(sesame) sauce, ginnan(ginkgo nuts), hamo no ko(roe of hamo) inside the orange leave, satoimo(taro), suzuki(eat with green sauce), anago sushi. The last three items are warm.
08090600080809060011
Hamo and atsuage. I’ve tried hamo a few times before and I never thought it was anything special, but after trying the hamo in this restaurant, I realised I just never had a good one before!
Makogarei and Maguro. Eat with either ponzu or soy sauce. The brown-ish cube is kanten jelly with seeds.

Aubergine and pumpkin takiawase. It is so simple but so delicious.
Fried ayu was great but the fried pepper, edamame and corn were truly outstanding.

Maitake mushroom takikomi gohan. Miso soup with winter melon.
Kyohou grape jelly. So nice!

The food might look ordinary and sound simple but the quality is just fantastic. At first the pace of delivery of each course was a bit too fast - we were busy chatting - but I told the staff to slow down a bit and it was fine. The lady in kimono was very friendly. Two of us shared a small bottle of nihonshu(1000yen) she recommended which was very nice. I went for lunch on a Saturday and only booked the day before but I had no problem getting a private room on the first floor. On the way to the bathroom(only on second and third floor), we saw that while the tables are only partitioned with screens, they look very comfortable with sunlight coming through the windows. Nice place to have a relaxing holiday lunch~

Currently my no.1 favourite bakery in Tokyo! The original shop is in Mishuku(三宿) which I’ve never visited - I always buy from the branch inside Takashimaya Nihonbashi. I must mention that the bread is very expensive. After spending like thousands of yen on only a small amount of bread I always regret a little(^^;;;), but after eating it I always crave more and can’t wait to go back to buy again. Highly recommended!

Sanma sashimi. Kaisen chirashi don(seafood rice bowl). Rice and soup are refillable.

Somehow I was expecting this place to be an izakaya specialised in seafood but it turned out to be a cheap shabby eatery run by a fish shop. Most customers appear to be locals living nearby. The menu offers a variety of fish either as sashimi or grilled. You can order it alone or as a set with rice and soup. The quality of sashimi is not fantastic but I guess it is okay for the price. I forgot how much we paid but it was very cheap. The grilled fish other people ordered looked good.

Namja Town (ナムコ・ナンジャタウン)

0809220018“Sasebo burger Big Man”(佐世保バーガービッグマン) inside Namja Town in Ikebukuro. Sasebo burger’s homepage here. Originally from Sasebo(Nagasaki) and now has a few branches in Tokyo. I had the most popular Bacon and egg burger(500yen). The bun, the patty, the bacon and of course the egg are all very soft which makes it easy-to-eat and kinda fast-food-ish(Or is it a fast food chain?). The coffee(330yen) and the fried cheese balls(400yen) aren’t very good though.

Miracle Fruit Cafe(ミラクルフルーツ カフェ) is the reason I paid the 300yen of entrance fee to Namja Town for. Read about Miracle fruit here. I had the sourest parfait “Super lemon with lemon jelly”(680yen). Miracle fruit needs to be ordered separately(250yen for one). After chewing and licking the miracle fruit as much as I can for a few mintues without swallowing, the lemon slices and sugar-less lemon jelly taste nicely sweet, but towards the end I can taste the sourness coming back already. Fresh fruit platter maybe a better choice as you can try how different fruits turn sweet after eating the Miracle fruit. Apparently all the “desserts” in the menu are under 100kcal!

メンチカツセット、¥2600。
Menchi-katsu set includes salad, soup, rice and coffee. 2600yen is so expensive…but the Menchi-katsu is really nice - juicy inside and cripsy outside, the beef used is good.

Omelette rice lunch set with salad, carrot soup and coffee, 1800yen. Very good! The fried rice with ketchup, chicken and mushroom was wrapped immaculately inside the omelette, the demi glace sauce was nice too.

A favourite lunch spot near Tokyo Dome. Lunch includes salad, plain rice or rice with green shiso(aojiso), miso soup - all refillable. Other than the yuzu soy sauce dressing on the table, you can ask for other flavours: 1) sesame, 2) onion, 3) umejiso(sour plum shiso) and mayonnaise. Dressing menu here.

海の幸フライ定食(海老かつ、白身魚フライ)、¥1300。 とんかつ ロース、¥2100。
Assorted fry: Ebi-katsu and fried fish.
Tonkatsu(2100yen) from the regular menu. Hmm I think the lunch menu has better value for money. (Lunch menu for each month can be found in this page.)

This is a sister restaurant of Bodaiju(entry here) and is in the same location. The menu is quite similar but I really like the non-deep-fried menu in Katsu Kichi. At lunch time, Katsu Kichi is non-smoking which is great, despite the fact that there is this old furniture smell, probably from the wooden decor, that always takes a few mins getting used to. Service is good in both places.
