柳屋 (Yanagiya)

Taiyaki shop established in 1916. I have passed by many times and not for a single time a long queue didn’t form there(even in pouring rain). Only twice I managed to muster up enough patience to wait but unfortunately I was disappointed both times. The crust was not crispy and half(2 out of 4) of the taiyaki I got were kinda lopsided, with too much flour lumped to one side. I think I prefer “Nezu no Taiyaki” for crispy crust and “Naniwaya” for nice charcoal smell(see tags for related posts).

Left pic is goma(sesame seed) taiyaki. Right pic is regular taiyaki. Very interesting shape! Though I am not so fond of eating such a big crust(I prefer a thin crispy crust with lots of red bean paste inside).

Very famous taiyaki shop in Azabu Juban. The funny guy in picture just slid in front of my camera when I tried to take pictures of the grill. ^^;;;

To take-out the taiyaki, you need to phone and reserve a few hours in advance(not that it takes a few hours to make the taiyaki but the shop is always too busy with too many orders). There is a newly opened cafe on the second floor where you can have freshly-made taiyaki. Drink set with one taiyaki is 600yen. Also ordered a kinako roll cake with red bean paste. Both are very good! Take-out taiyaki are still very nice if you reheat them in a toaster or oven. The charcoal aroma from the bag made my mouth water all the way home.

Famous Taiyaki shop that I have bought from many times but never blogged properly. I really like it! The skin is thin and crispy and the red bean is stuffed all the way to the tip of the tail. You must eat the freshly baked ones on the spot. Long queues on weekends!
