Penang Malaysian Restaurant (West Covina)

By in 18: Greater LA, Favorite Food Entries

On our way back from the desert, we stopped by West Covina for Malaysian food. Malaysian Restaurant Penang hides in a small corner in a giant mall with Chinese supermarket and restaurants. It’s surprisingly huge inside.

We spent more than 15 minutes trying to consume the thick menu, because everything look so tempting.

Roti Canai: a type of Malaysian flatbread, but more fluffy. There are sprinkles of sugars on top and curry dipping sauce on the side. The combination of buttery bread, sugar and curry are so good.

Bah Kut Teh. Literally it means “Pork Rib Soup.” It is a Chinese soup popular in the southern Asia. So flavorful and tasty (but I’m almost certain it’s enhance with loads of MSG).

Penang Char Kway Teow: Fried Flat Noodle. A little oily but that’s why it’s fiery and delicious.

Pandan Ikan filet: the top layer is lightly fried. The chili based sauce is so strong tasting, I feel like gulping down cups of tea to remedy the flavor. But it’s so tasty that I can’t stop.

Shrimp paste stirred fried Morning glory. The vegetable we ordered in hope to help ‘balancing’ turns out to be just as oily and strong tasting. Complimentary dessert: helps tone down the assaults from the strong flavors.

Too bad I lived too far from it, this place seems to offer great Southern Asian feast. I saw huge tables of families ordering banquet portions. Since the flavors tend to be strong, it’d be great to share with a big group so you get to taste a bit from every plate without being overwhelmed. Our mouth was very dried afterward (MSG effect?)

Thanks for commenting! 😀 I asked the waitress the name of the dessert yet I forgot now… it surely must be Pandan!

amazing pics as usual! the green dessert is definitely a pandan coconut jello type thing, but i forget the actual name too. i think the fish dish is “pandan” too (instead of pangan).
