Newport Tan Cang Seafood Restaurant (San Gabriel)

Newport Tan Cang Seafood Restaurant is a very popular Chinese/Vietnamese seafood restaurant that used to be located in the same plaza as the famous Golden Deli. They moved to a new location recently at a bigger space with a brand new look as well as a nice website. I was quite shocked to see how nice and designy the interior becomes. As many know, most Asian restaurants in San Gabriel Valley rarely pay attention to decor and design.

IMG_6592The big fish tanks with live crabs and lobsters at the entrance were quite impressive. Newport’s biggest draw is their fresh seafood, particularly the lobster and crab. Just as its old location, the place is always super crowded, wait is long and they don’t take reservation. We were lucky to go in at the right moment and got a table without waiting. Though our group of three also couldn’t order too much. That’s always a problem when eating at these banquet style seafood restaurant…it’s best to go with a bigger group.

Amazing and fresh! Since the dish has Vietnamese influence, the flavors are stronger and more flavorful than the usual Southern Chinese palette.

Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan) with dried flounder. Dried flounder is an essential ingredients in many Southern Chinese cooking (i.e. the broth of wonton noodle), they went well with Chinese broccoli.

Loc Lac French Beef Cube – tender and lots of flavors. It’s really good with white rice so I ended up eating way too much rice than I normally would.

Clam with basil – light tasting sauce with a mild spicy kick to it. Also a great dish to eat with rice.

It was a satisfying meal and our stomach were more than 100% fulled by the end. Newport is probably the best place for good and fresh Chinese (some dishes with Vietnamese influence) seafood in town. For those who aren’t familiar with this type of Chinese cuisine, this is the place to try.

  2. I agree, this restaurant is great. Prices are quite reasonable too.

I can’t hop on this bandwagon. The lobster and crabs are always supremely expensive, despite the recent lobster glut. Dropped $400+ for a group of 10 eating very MSG spiked seafood last month. Not amused. Never again (3rd time at 2 SGV branches).
