Anko-chimu: Anko(Angler-fish/Monkfish) with spicy sauce.

Chijimi was delicious, Yukke and Chapuche were good but nothing special, the most expensive Possamu and Anko-chimu – both recommended by the restaurant staff – were no good. 3 of us shared all the food, 2 beers, 1 tea and 1 makkori(Korean rice wine), it came up to 5000yen per person…quite expensive!

Yukkejan Kuppa(Rice and vegetables in spicy soup). Potato chijimi(Korean pancake) – it reminds me of hash brown!

Some friends took me to this popular Korean BBQ place in Shinokubo, which is like a Korean town with many eateries and shops. We went to the branch which is right next to the original shop. We booked in advance so didn’t have to wait. And thank god for that – look at all those people without reservations waiting outside! There is a time limit of two hours, which is more than enough to stuff our faces with yummy food. Everything we ordered was so nice, but the best was definitely the pork belly. It was surprisingly not that greasy, just like my friends assured me before we went. The hot plate is slanted so all the oil drips down into a bowl. You are not supposed to grill the meat yourself – the staff will do everything for you. The lettuce and other green veggy are for wrapping the meat, and you can have as many servings as you want. Service is not like smiley or friendly but they are efficient and you get what you want quickly, like water and extra servings of veggy. Most importantly this place is cheap!! We ate like pigs, and including drinks it was only about 2700yen per person. Definitely want to go back again.

ぶるだっく: 蒸した鶏もも肉をオリジナルソースで直火焼きした夜の定番メニュー。
Dinner at a chain restaurant from Korea.
Booldak: Steamed chicken grilled with original sauce. The dish that is also the restaurant’s name. Very very spicy!! But the chicken is soft and juicy, and the sauce is addictive. The original spicy version is only available at dinner time – at lunch time it is a milder version.

Pork belly meat grilled in original sauce. Sweeter and milder than Booldak. The meat is a bit hard.
Fresh vegetables to wrap around the meat which makes it less spicy.

Squid and prawn soup with egg tofu. Very good!
Rice soup is mostly tasteless water with very little rice.

A rather local yakiniku restaurant recommended by a friend who is living nearby and is sort of a regular. We got to order stuff that are not on the menu(e.g. cow tongue sashimi and beef sashimi), and enjoy an incredible omakase course which allowed us to try almost everything on the menu. It is however an impossible task to translate the menu…in fact I can’t even match the name with the right picture cos they all look the same. ^^;; Basically we tried various parts of cow, both the meat and the horumon.

The umeshu here is very nice with a variety of choices – nihonshu based, shochu based, white wine based, red wine based, and house blend. I like the house blend and nihonshu based of umeshu the most. The one in the picture is just nihonshu.

My favourite horumon “shibire”, it tastes like foie gras~ Takes a while to grill until it is smooth and creamy.

The steak is nice too. The waitor cut it into pieces for us. But I prefer the fatty thin slices of beef which are just much more juicy.

061206 122The usual stomach-filling carbs(though we were already very full…): Korean beef soup rice, chilled buckwheat noodles, and ramen in a hot stone bowl. I think we paid about 12,000yen each. Considering how much we ate and drank, and how amazing the quality of the meat was, not a bad deal.

豚スンドゥブ(みそベース):豚肉、あさり、豆腐、しいたけ、ネギ、油揚げ、貝柱、芝エビ。ランチセットは、ご飯、ナムル、キムチ、デザート付きで、900円。 トッポギはトッピングで100円。辛さはベリーホット。
Pork “Sundub” lunch set. Ingredients are pork, clam, tofu(soft type), shiitake mushroom, spring onion, deep-fried tofu, scallop, prawns. Extra order of Korean mochi stick. Two kinds of soup base and I chose miso. Three level of hotness and of course I had “Very hot”. The menu’s suggestion is to eat the first half of the rice with the soup, and then add the Namul, chilli paste and the soup into the rest of the rice and eat it like a bibimbap. I did that and it was really nice. The soup is really delicious anyway, whatever you do with it, it will be good.

カムジャタンとは豚の背骨とじゃがいもの鍋。
The food was shared between 4 ppl. I craved plain rice cos every dish was so strong flavour. I like seafood pancake but it fills up your stomach very quickly because of the combination of egg+starch+oil. Also love the spicy raw crab though you can hardly taste the crab – it could be anything. ^^;; The pork backbone and potato hotpot is good but there is not much to eat – really just mostly bones.

Very small and crowded restaurant with basic interior. Not so spicy but good Korean food. The beef and salad is quite big. Tofu spicy hotpot is nice. All the food shared between 2 people, plus a few drinks, about 6000yen in total. Certainly not cheap but this area is a bit upscale so…
