From the back garden of the Alegria Inn there’s a pathway down to the beach. There was a heavy storm the night before we arrived, hence lots of grotesque looking seaweed and driftwoods washed up ashore. Fortunately the weather was perfect when we were there.

Alegria’s breakfast (Mendocino)

//// By in 04: SF+Bay Area

DSCN9456We stayed at a house that’s part of the gorgeous Alegria bed and breakfast place for 3 nights. There’s no TV or internet (gasp!). There’s only a fireplace and an old style radio which we can get like 1 or 2 stations. We end up playing lots of chess, reading and drinking wine ^^;;

Every morning we get continental breakfast that came in a basket and newspaper delivered to the door. The pastries are freshly baked and very delicious. Also came with tea, coffee and orange juice. Apparently if you stay at the more expensive suite you’re served full breakfast at the dining room that has an amazing view.

Mendocino (part 1)

//// By in Travel

DSCN9367
DSCN9344 We’re staying at Mendocino for 3 nights. It’s beautiful coastal town right by the ocean that’s about 3+ hours drive North from San Francisco. It took about 1-2 hour drive on a windy road in the midst of tall redwood forest to get to Mendocino.

DSCN9486DSCN9361
The town is small and we could walk to places everywhere. Lots of beautiful Victorian and New England style houses and Bed and Breakfast everywhere. It was populated by artists and bohemians in the 50s. There’s still a stong “hippie” vibe, lots of headshops and peace signs carved or pinned all over the area, just as the “no cellphone” signs.

You can find beautiful postcard moment everywhere. The sceneries are just breathtaking. We hike along the coast lines of the 3 days we spend there. See more pictures at my Flickr or Jon’s Flickr.

R&G Lounge (San Francisco Chinatown)

//// By in 04: SF+Bay Area

DSCN9311.jpg
Soy Sauce Chicken is really good! The meat is very tender and I love the sauce a lot! Very flavored yet not too salty.
DSCN9312.jpgDSCN9316.jpg
Salted fish chicken and Bean curd in clay pot and Tender greens in broth with shredded ham are both a bit light for my taste but still good.

We stayed a night at San Francisco downtown before heading out to Mendocino. We wandered to Chinatown which is very tacky and tourisy. Most of the restaurants we came upon to were empty and didn’t look promising. So I went to a bookstore to asked for recommendation. Two locals recommended us the R&G Lounge, an authentic Cantonese seafood/banquet style restaurant. Their English name doesn’t sound like an authentic Chinese restaurant but as soon as we arrived, seeing the place packed with Chinese crowd we know this must be good. The 3 dishes compliment each other well. Definitely a must go for great authentic Cantonese cuisine at San Francisco Chinatown.

Big Sky Cafe (San Luis Obispo)

//// By in 05: US Other

DSCN9305.jpgDSCN9302.jpg
DSCN9304.jpgJon and I went on a 5 days trip to San Francisco and Mendocino. On our 6-7 hours drive to SF we stoped by San Luis Obispo that’s about halfway in between for brunch. Big Sky cafe is a favorite among the locals, especially their brunch. Portobello Mushroom Benedict: roasted mushrooms and tomatoes over holland rusk with poached eggs and hollandaise. The mushrooms goes really well with the running york and hollandaise sauce. It’s also comes with coffee bread. Blue cheese apples and smoked bacon omelette: a mix of sour cream and Maytag blue cheese with sauteed apples & bacon. The food is great, but service is not so attentive.

An interesting sight in San Luis Obispo: the Bubblegum Alley. A hallway filled with disarded gum. Kind of gross ^^;;
