igrek MARUNOUCHI (イグレック 丸の内)

From the 5000yen lunch course.
Salmon with coriander and vegetables.
Asparagus Velouté with prawns.

Pan-fried duck in eshallot sauce, with spinach ravioli and mushroom saute.
Tea jelly, ganache cake, framboise sorbet, mango macaron and mango sauce.
The food was just okay. The duck was already cold when it came out. Portion was tiny. Quite expensive for the quality. Apparently butter and cream are not heavily used and more emphasis are put on the vegetables. I guess it will be perfect for the elderly...
It is on the 5th floor of Shin-marunouchi building, which actually opened on the day we went for lunch. ^^;;;;; It opened at 11am and we booked for 12am....you can imagine how crowded it was. We had to queue to get into the building, then another queue for the elevator/escalator. People people people EVERYWHERE! No time and no strength to take pics of the interior, just the pretty reporter here and the massive queue here. The view from the restaurant is superb, overlooking Tokyo station. Not taken from the restaurant I had lunch but the view is similar(here). After lunch we explored all the floors and found many tempting restaurants....and have already booked two restaurants on the spot. So I guess I will be coming back again...^^;;

Le Manoir D'HASTINGS

4800yen lunch includes two appetizers(many choices), main dish and dessert.
Rose champagne 1700yen, glass wine 1250yen~.

Amuse-bouche: Boudin noir(pork blood sausage). So good!
Specialty: Carrot mousse and consomme jelly with sea urchin.

Butter rice rolled in Unagi. The unagi is grilled crispy on the outside.
Pig foot rolled with chicken mousse and mushroom and simmered in port wine.
Somehow I ordered an appetizer and a main that look the same and taste similar....^^;; But both are delicious.

Wagon dessert. White chocolate mousse.
The appetizers and the main dish are all very good. Though the white chocolate mousse is actually better than the desserts which are pretty normal. The service is not so friendly. In fact we were all a bit annoyed at some point. Well go for the food but not for the service.
Lunch menu(J) here.

I was expecting some stylish and upscale Japanese washoku place, so I was a little taken back by the entrance which is impossible to spot and far from pretty. Inside is very basic and small, with only 10 counter seats. Forgot the exact price, but the cheapest lunch course I ordered was about 3000yen.
Ankimo chawanmushi. Absolutely delicious!! Has a hint of vinegar.

Anago steamed with rice.
Cod shirako osuimono(clear broth). The shirako is so creamy and rich~.

Lotus root manju. Very mochi-mochi.
Grilled hachiuo. Fatty and juicy fish.

Jako(little fish) rice. Miso soup is very good. Dessert is lotus root cake. Reminds me of chinese dim sum but very good.
The environment might not be up to much but the food is to die for. Good value for this kind of proper kaiseki-ish washoku too.

Manju Cafe Mugimaru2 (マンヂウカフェ ムギマル2)

A cafe specialised in manju.
Red bean paste and cheese in a wild grass(yomogi) manju.
Red bean paste and cinnamon in a Earl Grey tea flavoured manju.
The manju are freshly made and come steaming hot and have very soft skin. The chai is strong and rich.
Menu: 1, 2.
I sat on the second floor which has very cute decor. Looks like this cafe is converted from a house. The manju are steamed on the first floor. I didn't know I had to take off my shoes before climbing the steep stairs and was told off by the staff....I saw some slippers there and wore them without thinking, and was told off again because the slippers are only for the bathroom...^^;; Wish there were signs or something.

Omurice lunch set. It is okay. The ketchup rice inside is a bit soggy. The restaurant is on the second floor and the bakery is on the first floor. The old-fashioned custard cream bun(very big!) seems popular and gets sold out around lunch time. Also got the chestnut bun which has massive chunks of chestnut inside. The bread itself is so-so but the filling is delicious. ^^;;

La butte boisée (ラビュット・ボワゼ@奥沢)

Like visiting someone's house! Located in a residential area, about 10 minutes walk from the station if you don't get lost, which you probably will...

Lovely waiting room. We got a table next to the window with a garden view. Too bad it was raining but still very pretty.

Rillette: Onion and radish, mustard, duck, Ricotta cheese.
Bread: Kumazasa(herb) roll, rice bran baguette, seaweed bread etc.
Very fancy but not that tasty...

White asparagus, Iidako(octopus) confit, hon-mategai(clam) in marinade, bacon and nuts in vinaigrette. We were told to lift the plastic tube thing and mix the food. The sauce around the plate is pumpkin. Kurogome(black rice) risotto in the middle, and some fried sakura prawn here and there. A bit Japanese feel.
Grilled kan-buri(winter yellowtail), fuki-no-tou caramélisée, eshallot in sherry vinegar sauce. This is 99% Japanese...I couldn't stop thinking about rice and chopsticks while I ate it.

Lamb chop, lamb meat wrapped Pate Brick and vegetables. The famous spiral plate! But I never expected that it would be used to serve the main dish...very difficult to eat with fork and knife! Taste-wise, it is 99% chinese. Even the sauce tastes like oyster sauce...what the hell...give me some rice!!

Framboise(mousse) and mango(mousse) and pear(ice-cream), puzzle style. This is the dessert for a 5900yen lunch course? You've got to be kidding me...
The nicest thing in the whole course is the fresh herb tea, which is an extra 350yen. My impression was that: go for the lovely environment and the arty presentation but don't go for the food or service. Though some of my eating buddies said that they had very nice food(not nouvelle/chinois/japon whatever but proper French food) when they went. So maybe I was just unlucky...

Seemingly very famous place for Unaju - eel on rice in a box. The difference in price is just the difference in size of the unagi. I had the cheapest(2620yen!) and it was pretty big already. The madam said unadon(eel on rice in a bowl) uses fatter unagi, but she recommended Unaju so we all had it. It is very good. Huge portion. Want to try the Unadon next time!
(Whole set looks like this.)

Restaurant Maison de Famille@

Lunch is 2100yen.
Long leek and Brie de Meaux gratin. A bit oily.
Lamb quenelle with cumin seed. Bottom layer is tomato and mushroom; ground lamb meat in the middle; onion and cheese and cumin on top; basil oil sauce and potato gratin on the side. The tomato gets quite watery and a bit too much basil oil, but overall it is okay.

Custard cake with apple simmered in red wine. Strawberry cake. Yogurt sorbet. The desserts are so-so.
Taste-wise it is nothing special. They keep giving you bread which is not warm but still quite good. The restaurant is right next to an university though the price range seems to keep the students away. The table next to me was a bunch of professors and office staffs. I remember this place used to be a cheap bistro but has changed to a proper French restaurant.

Kanda Yabusoba (かんだやぶそば)

Spring vegetables tempura. Seiro soba.

Soba and green tea soba kasutera.
I was told that this soba place is very famous. Went on a weekend and it was packed with tourists taking photos of the old Japanese house. Later realised that this place is introduced in many tourist guides as "Probably Tokyo's most famous soba shop"....all these years living in Tokyo and I never heard about this place. ^^;;; The spring vegetables are delicious. But the soba is nothing special I thought...plus the pretty normal-tasting kasutera, it costed me 2150yen. Quite expensive!

The Crescent (クレッセント)

An old French restaurant which has been around for ages. The "cheapest" lunch course was 8000yen. (N.B. This place has stopped doing lunch now)

Foie gras mousse. Rich-tasting.
Bread is warm and so delicious that I had three.

Lobster salad. Very fresh lobster.
Turnip soup.

Pan-fried Anko(angler fish) with balsamico vinegar sauce.
Warm chocolate cake and vanilla ice-cream. Warm chocolate sauce at the centre.

Petit fours. The sugar-coated little tomatoes are very nice. Madeleine are warmed.

A cute box for us to take home the little sweets that we couldn't finish. So cute!
Overall the food is not bad, but you basically get your money's worth from the classic interior and nice atmosphere.

An Italian restaurant or Izakaya? Specialised in octopus. Too bad the day I went they had no octopus in their lunch menu(it changes everyday). Well I am not a big fan of octopus. Spaghetti with aubergine and duck meat sauce + clam and kidney bean peperoncino, 1050yen. Taste OK. Very tiny place with cute octopus decor everywhere. La Luna Rossa (ラ・ルーナ・ロッサ@中目黒)

Lovely window view of a little river(Megurogawa). There are sakura trees along the river so the location is perfect for ohanami. But then you will probably have to book way in advance and it is hard to predict the blossom period which is only like a week...I didn't even bother to try. ^^;;

Grilled clam with breadcrumbs. Good.
Oyster fried in pastella of batter, with potato cream and prosciutto. A bit salty and the batter is quite thick.

Bread is so-so.
Pici(pasta) with platinum pork salsiccia(sausage) and nanohana and parmesan cheese. The handmade pasta is very good!

Pork with seasonal vegetables. Bland.
Warm bitter chocolate Tortino. Chocolate is rich. Very good. The little balls are truffle ice-cream. The cream for the chocolate cake is banana flavour.
Lunch course I ordered was about 4000yen. There is a cheaper 3000yen lunch course that doesn't include the meat dish while the pasta(same choice as 4000yen course) is twice the portion. Since the meat is no good anyway, the cheaper pasta lunch is probably a better choice. I only had a glass of sparkling wine and mineral water, came up to 5700yen.
Service is just so-so. And despite the fact that the restaurant is along the river, it is quite hard to find - everyone got lost. Sakura blossoming or not, the environment is very nice though.

Carrot mousse, crab and scallop tartare, vegetables and uni and tomato jelly. A little cold in the middle but overall very refreshing.

Pan-fried Sawara(Spanish Mackerel), cod croquette. Like the croquette more than the fish.
Grilled Iberico pork shoulder meat. Smokey flavour and ham-like solid texture. Minced pork rolled in zucchini on the side is good too.

Roll cake with yogurt sorbet. There were 3 desserts to choose from and I originally picked the blanc manger, but AFTER I ordered, my friends told me that the roll cake is the specialty of the house. I grabbed the waiter immediately and changed my order, and he said "Oh yeah, roll cake is THE thing to order, but I am in no position to hardsell it...." (No, it is your JOB to recommend!! ^^;) Anyway, I am glad I ordered it, cos it really is very good. The cream and the sponge are so smooth and rich. The finger cakes that come with the coffee are crispy on the surface, very good too.

Matcha ice-cream.
Overall the food is very good. The saba(mackerel) sushi is absolutely amazing. Though the main dish(grilled fish) is a bit dry...There were two types of fish for you to choose as the main. I chose the one that is normally more fatty and my friend picked the other. Turned out that my friend's choice was fish cheek, which we weren't told - the cheek of a skinny fish will be more juicy than the body part of a fat fish. ^^;;;; Anyway, the main chef only appeared from time to time. Most of the stuff was cooked by the two young apprentices...

Got a Mackerel sushi to eat on the shinkansen. Unfortunately I bought from the WRONG shop!! My friend recommended this shop. Argh next time! ^^;;

KYOTO DAY 1

(Soujiki Nakahigashi)
Soujiki literally means "eating glass". The owner chef spends 2,3 hours every morning picking wild grass and turns them into wonderful cuisine. My friend told me this is the kind of food that Japanese eat in the past. Somehow I have two serious friends who carried a wild grass dictionary with them and studied it while they ate....Reservation is nearly impossible. My friend's mom helped to call one month in advance, on the first day of the month starting from 8am...and apparently she kept phoning non-stop for 30 mins until finally she got through the line. It is that crazy.

Homemade tofu. Meji-maguro and tai(bream).

Mackerel with sesame seed.
Fried aubergine and minced meat.

Shirako chawanmushi(mochi and seaweed in it).
Simmered sparerib.

Grilled sawara fish with salt.
Chicken tataki(seared).

Fried anago. Nikujaga and curry rice.

Some of the dishes are very much the common souzai(惣菜) - Japanese side dishes that you eat with rice. Indeed I craved rice desperately, especially when having the aubergine and the sparerib cos they had strong taste. Overall the food is great. Love the chawanmushi. A lot of meat for a Japanese course.
The waitress didn't know anything whatever we asked her about the menu. The waiter did seem to know but wasn't quite eager to tell us much. They charged us 2000yen more than they should have...lucky my friend noticed it. No apologies from the staff about the mistake whatsoever. Have to conclude that the service is spotty at best. Shame though cos the food is good...
