We wanted a light dinner after an exhausted arrival day. Shanghai’s most famous snack: Soup Dumplings (Xiao Lung Bao) would have been quite perfect.
We went to the famous Wang Jia Sha that’s located at the heart of WuJiang Road Food Street.
Crab Roe Soup Dumpling. At first glance they didn’t look right, where is the dot of Crab Roe on top of each dumpling as displayed on their photos? Then the taste…very oily and not particularly flavorful. The skin was normal quality as well.
The soup inside wasn’t that pleasant to drink. The crab roe infused soup are usually very rich, but this oily-ness is beyond my standard. I actually had to spit out the soup. It made me wonder…did they mix in pork oil in the soup to make cheat the content?
Ouch…not an enjoyable Xiao lung bao experience on our first night. Fortunately this was the last bad xiao lung bao we had in the trip.

Bad xiao long bao in Shanghai?! That makes me sad. 🙁
I read a lot prior and most people recommended Ding Tai Fung at Shanghai…which to me sounds very strange (why do I have to get the best Xiao long Bao in Shanghai at a Taiwanese chain!?). But now I see their point…it’s all about the ingredients and QC.
Seems like many of the local Shanghainese restaurants’s quality aren’t that consistent. This place gave me the feeling of those ‘once famous but now quality declined due to popularity’. However we did have really good xiao lung bao at a local eatery (coming up soon)…so Shanghai is redeemed.
Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic however , I’d figured I’d ask.
