Lee’s Sandwich (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

DSC03976.jpgExhausted from driving under the cruel sun, I dived in the first of the many Vietnamese Sandwich places on Valley Blvd. for some ice coffee and Banh mi (and air con). This place is surprisingly huge inside: it has internet cafe section, ice cream booth, dessert bar & mini-market.

The sandwich are all under $3. Cured Pork and Pate. They seems to only have either grilled meat or cured pork. This cured pork is a bit like proscuitto but more mushy texture. I’m so-so about it. The baguette was stale too. The pickled veggie was tasty though.

Sapp Coffee Shop (Thai Town)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

DSC03966.jpgIt’s been ridiculously hot in LA for the past week that we avoid going out as much as possible (hence lack of update). But we still need to feed our stomach. This usually named Thai noodle house (coffee shop?) is one of the best and cheapest lunch spot we frequent during work. The menu gave me the feeling of a street side noodle stand, the noodles are tasty even with cheap ingredients (the ‘seafood’ dishes are mostly imitation crab, fishballs…etc!)

DSC03963.jpg
Yen Ta Fo, a mixed seafood (+ fried pork skin) thick noodle in reddish sweet & sour pink sauce (which wasn’t fully stirred in the photo). The flavor is well balance, not too sweet unlike other places. I wish there were pork blood (coagulated) in it. The noodle was smooth.

Beef Boat Noodle with beef meatballs, liver, tripe, tendon, and fried pork skins. At first glance it seems similar to Vietnamese pho, but the flavors are more complex. The broth has a wonderful exotic aroma and multiple flavors (sweet, sour, salty, spicy all at the same time); and it looks murky from the cow blood. Again I wish there were some actual cow/pork blood pieces in it.

Cafe Metropol (artist district)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA

DSCN0565.jpgDSCN0567.jpg
Too bad cafe Metropol (old entry) doesn’t open on Sunday since they have an quite extensive brunch menu, and I like their space a lot (so un-LA!) European breakfast: 2 eggs, salad or grill potatos, choice of bread and meat (bacon is what Jon chose). I got the Banana Waffle, blue berries is another option. Good! Not amazing but it’s good for its reasonabe price. They have a good list for alcohol breakfast drinks too.

Cal Tech Athenaeum Buffet

//// By in 02: Pasadena

A friend of ours was a Caltech student (genius!) and belonged to the Caltech Faculty Club. He told us about the club’s Wednesday night buffet ($28) and that they have really good prime rib! Outsiders can only get in by being invited by a club member. So he invited a big group of us~

DSC03919.jpgDSC03920.jpg
The buffet is held at The Athenaeum, beautiful~ No strict dress code but collar shirt is recommended.

DSC03926.jpgDSC03928.jpg
The buffet area was at the garden outside. The salad bar has many delicious gourmet salad, raw oyster, crab legs, shrimp and cheese.

DSC03922.jpgDSC03933.jpg
The seatings are inside a grand and classical ballroom (with piano performance). The sushi roll, salmon and tuna are not bad, but the yellowtail are a bit fishy.

DSC03935.jpg
Prime Rib. Sliced at your order. It’s so juicy and tender, so good! I especially like the wasabi mashed sweet potato side. There are a lot more meat actually (forgot to take pictures), fish, chicken…so much food! But some people continued to get their 2nd and 3rd slice of prime rib.

DSC03946.jpgDSC03953.jpg
More desserts. We came too late so when we get to dessert they were wrapping up, and many desserts were gone already~

DSC03939.jpgDSC03942.jpg
Still the desserts are amazing, full of variety~ Banana Flambé was made right in front of you (mini-fire show) when you ordered.

DSC03927.jpgThe chocolate fountain where you dip strawberries, marshmallow, etc. Afterward we took a stroll at Cal tech campus to walk off the food. I love the whole experience, one of the better buffets I’ve ever been to.
