La Bottega Marino (Larchmont)

Made it just five minute before the breakfast time ended, I grabbed a quick one at Larchmont’s La Bottega Marino (see old entry about this place that served Italian breakfast). I had the Ricotta Cheese and Spinach Frittata. Frittata is Italian omelette that’s like baked opened face quiche…bland tasting though the eggs were very fresh. The jam seems homemade. Lovely~ And as always I enjoyed their coffee with steamed milk!

Lemon Moon (Olympic)

Honey Dew Lemonade. I heard about this place. It is an upscale cafeteria for the business crowds located at the modern concrete+glass business building Westside Media Center. That building has a very slick courtyard. The patrons are all westside business people (feeling out of place there ^^:;). It is opened by two chefs from two famous highend restaurants in Santa Monica.

The deli section features fusion multi-ethnic salad, such as the Thai Chicken Coconut Soup (too light), Moroccan Eggplant (very spiced, hurting my tongue midway) and a balsamic vinegrette (?) corn salad (I could take a few bites, then it just get too intensely acidic, especially combined with the former). The other offerings at the deli include stuffs like Spicey Korean noodle salad, Vietnamese rice paper wrap with avacado (which the lady in front of me thought was ‘spring roll’ ^^:;), etc. They might seem ‘unusual’ at first (especially for cafeteria food), but I envied the simple burger and fries other people ordered instead…

Clearly serving the business crowd, this cafeteria only opens on weekdays. The brunch menu is only served till 10am. It’s a good quality (and unboring) quick grab for people working around Olympic & Bundy, but not a ‘destination’…

Welcome to Gentrification City

//// By in Siteseeing

There’s an interesting article at this week’s LA Weekly, “Welcome to Gentrification City” that summerize the recent rise of luxury condo/lofts all around LA inner cities and a rush of upper middle class ‘overtaking’ lower-middle income neighorhoods, changing the dynamic of the community, etc. I know friends who got forced out of their low rent apartment because the owner is either selling or converting it to luxury condo for sell (err…I’m living in one of these kind of condo…).

I mentioned the emergence of Gelato boom around LA before, apparently it is one of ‘signs’ of city gentrification according to LA Weekly: ^^:;

Gelato: Back in the 1990s, coffeehouses were a pivotal sign of gentrification, showing buyers of means that a neighborhood was ready for its close-up

Elements Kitchen catering

Last Saturday I had to go to a shoot for a Mercedes project at an insert stage right next to the Burbank Airport. For lunch there’s catering from a catering service called Elements Kitchen. The Portobello Mushrooms are delicious! Other stuffs are rather bland tasting, especially the chicken breast which is dry and hard (not a fan of chicken breast to begin with). The bread is not fresh baked so it’s hard. Dessert is a huge chocolate cake and as expected it’s nothing to write home about. Oh well, the food served its purpose to fill the film crew’s starving stomach. The Portobello Mushrooms were definitely a pleasant surprise, I would like to try to make that myself!

Izayoi (Little Tokyo)

DSCN8011.jpgBack to Izayoi. Once again I got the Uni Chawanmushi (still very delicious) and Seafood cream croquette (cripsy and hot, yummy!). Jon ordered some sort of tofu thing (age tofu) but the dish that came taste more like Konjac or Dim sum’s marinate Jelly fish to me. Gindara black cod marinated in sake/miso, good but the portion is too small. grilled rice ball plain rice, good for stomach filling.
