K-ZO (Culver City)

By in 13: Culver City

This place buy ads like crazy on Citysearch (shows up whenever you search for Japanese restaurant on the west side) that it imprinted in my brain. So one night two friends and I thought of coming here to try.

Seabass and Roasted Eggplant. Can’t help feeling both of these cooked dishes’s sauce taste a bit too similar.

Uni, Caviar Oyster and Uni Sushi. The Oysters were small, very good. Since it was a small tiny gulp…I couldn’t taste the uni well. When I had the uni sushi…hmm it’s not good uni (refrained from using certain word to describe it).

Very fresh Yellow-Tail and normal Oyster. GOOD!

The Toro alone was $30 alone…
DSC01948.jpgThey said it’s a Japanese tapas place (by tapas it really meant small dishes, not izakaya either). We were all kinda ‘meh’ on some of their sushi, especially for the high price. I especially expected good quality of their premium stuffs (Toro, Uni). There’re better sushi elsewhere with fairer price (Ike), but I guess this place is more about the whole package: slick traditional-chic decor, ambient, good wine/sake selection, pretty sake bottle, Rashomon playing on monitor…etc.

    Your comment fluctuates a lot between very good and very bad, from one dish to another. ^^;;

    haha yeah it wasn’t very consistent…the rice of sushi isn’t even good too. But things like half-shell oyster is crack open + add relish…so lesser chance to go wrong or show true color? ^^;;
