Ajisen Ramen (Temple City)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

More ramen chain entry, this time it’s Ajisen Ramen‘s newer branch at Temple City.

Spicy Pork Ramen, oily and salty, tasty but trashy tasting. ^^;; This Dynamite thingy is cheese, mayo with mushroom and scallop.

Unagi Fried Rice, pretty tasty~ and Fried Tofu.
DSC01832.jpgI felt my taste bud got a bit numbed afterward (msg?). I think this chain is okay if I want quick ramen fix, but whenever I drove to San Gabriel Valley area I would rather go for Chinese food. Plus I wouldn’t want my craving for ramen spoiled…

Teum Sae Ramen (Whilshire Blvd.)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

Took me awhile to figure out the English name (found an article about it) of this fairly new place on Wilshire. It’s a famous Korean ramen chain. The only English used in the entire place was the tagline at the door ‘Korean Noodlebar since 1981.’
DSC01842.jpgDSC01843.jpg
The staff doesn’t speak English, one of the waitors has his customer friend (the only one who could speak) took my order ^^;;; There’re post-its on the table for customers to write & paste. I saw a certain Chowhounder’s note. ^^;;

Since there’s not a word of English, I relied on the picture. This ramen has sausages & rice cakes. I chose medium spice level (quite hot). The noodle, the soup…taste a lot like…packaged instant noodle. ^^;; There were blocks of dry instant noodle as wall decorations.

Update: this place closed down few weeks after this was blogged.

Hwa Sun Ji Tea & Coffee (Wilshire Blvd.)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

DSC01848.jpgThere’s always this one place in your neighborhood you passed by everyday, but it seems secretive from the outside with tinted black glass and lack of signage that you only wondered and never ventured in. After I heard RP mentioned Hwa Sun Ji being a traditional Korean teahouse, I’m in!

DSC01860.jpgDSC01856.jpg
Rose Tea ($5) and a mix plate of Korean cookies ($6). I was expecting a stingy 4 pieces mini-plate, turns out it’s a huge plate. Even my big stomach can only eat half of them.

There seems to be only a variety of green tea, I didn’t see red nor black. However there’re many medicated Healthy drink (ex: deer’s young antlers), herbal tea, Fruit Tea, ginger, ginseng…etc. You can also reserve a Tea Ceremony for $10. The inteior is a very quiet, bright, colorful and peaceful, drastic contrast from the cold exterior and busy Wilshire street. The bamboo screens gave privacy to each table. Good find, now I know where’s the idea place chill with my reading and sketchbook. I’m still looking for a good traditional Chinese & Japanese teahouse in LA…

Hodori (Koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

Yummy chewy buckwheat Cold Noodle

DSC01826.jpgKoreatown is always a guarantee destination for Late Night eats as you can find dozen of 24 hours restaurant. Most are general Korean eateries with similar offerings. This one, Hodori, is adjacent to another one that looks exactly the same with almost the same menu. But my friend suggested this one as it has faster service. Ironically they forgot my friend’s Rice Cake Noodle, we had to remind them several times (as many waitresses couldn’t speak English well). The later it gets, the more crowded. By the time we left (2:30am), the entire place is completely filled up with a full parking lot.

Hodori is on Vermont & Olympic.

Yashima (Sawtelle)

//// By in 12: Sawtelle

Lunch with 2 friends here.
DSC01780.jpgDSC01783.jpg
One person got the Curry Don and two of us got the Bento Lunch set of the day: Salmon $9. Incredible~
DSC01782.jpgI didn’t know about this well hidden Japanese restaurant, up on the 2nd floor of a plaza (without visible signate from outside). Normally I wasn’t too thrill about bento lunch set (spoiled by many cheap ones), but I’m really really impressed. Can’t wait to come back to try other day’s.

Yashima is on the 2nd floor of the plaza at Sawtelle/Olympic.
