Hwang Hae Do (Koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire, Favorite Food Entries

My friend took me to this Korean place specialized in Bulgogi BBQ that’s cooked in broth. It looked a bit shabby from the outside, but it’s actually bright and roomy inside. We got the Lunch set, $19 for each person.

The set came with abundance of delicious, homemade small side dishes. The Pancake is thin and crepe-like, very yum!

Among the side dishes, there are two hot stoned bowls: miso tofu stew and steamed egg. I enjoyed them very much.

The main dish: Bulgogi cooked in Broth with Onion and Radish. The flavor is more subtle and natural. The thinly sliced beef are deeply flavored with the sweetness from onion. It’s so juicy and delicious. I like it much more than the usual BBQ.

They provide you different ingredients (vegetables, spicy miso sauce, etc )so you can dress up the cooked beef yourself. I like to eat the beef wrapped with mint leaf. Later on the waitress added Glass noodles, Glutinous Rice Cakes and Mushroom to the pot. The noodles soaked up the now wonderfully flavored beef onion broth, my goodness it’s so good.

The portion is unbelievably huge. We barely touched the side dishes and we ended up with half of the beef to take home. I wish they’ll let two of us sharing one person’s portion.

Red Corner Asia (Thai Town)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

Red Corner Asia is one of our usual work day lunch spot especially with a large group. And by ‘usual’ it means we know what we wanted and rarely tried new things.

One time a freelancer finally ordered something different: the Yum Cripsy Catfish: Shredded white meat of catfish, deep fried until golden brown, served on spicy apple salad. He said he had this with mango in Thailand. The sweet and spicy sauce goes well with the deep fried crisp (so fried that you can’t tell it’s meat).

The place I’m freelancing at have catering for lunch. Their daily rotation consists of businesses around the area, so despite I’m right around the corner of Fritto Misto and Bay Cities, I rarely go out for lunch. And one day, we have Fritto Misto (1, 2). It was almost like a ‘best of’. Incredible~~

Yungui Garden (Monterey Park)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel, Favorite Food Entries

We went back for more Yunnan rice noodles (old entry).

IMG_0489

We got the right item this time. The delicious Cold Noodle. It taste very strong with bold, vinegary sauce, pickled cabbages and salted grounded meat.

Their signature Across the Bridge Rice Noodle. Too bad the ingredients were mixed in the soup by the waitress before I get to take photos. The soup is very tasty, it’s cooked with chicken fat and leg bones of pigs. It’s a good warming, comforting dish.

Legend has it that in ancient China, a scholar’s wife invented this when she needed to find a way to keep her soup noodle hot when she had to deliver meals a long way across the bridge to her husband’s study room (where he shut himself to study) in bitter winter. The cooked chicken fat in the soap floated onto top and form a thick layer that keep the soup hot. The oily soup and smooth rice noodle is pretty much a invincible combination. Despite this being the 101 of Yunnan food and looked rather plain, many customers walked by our table kept asking me “that looked good, what it is?”

Il Capriccio Wood Fire Pizzeria (Los Feliz)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

We spotted this Pizza joint one day and walked in to try. It’s owned by the same people from Il Capriccio on Vermont (never been to).

Mushroom Soup. The front window is lined with chopped wood, to emphasis their “Wood Fired Oven” image? (popular step up point for recent LA Pizza scene 😉 )

We get their pizza + soup set. Prosciutto & Mushroom. A bit stingy on the prosciutto, but the crust is good! It seems like a good neighborhood pizzeria. Casual and Quick.
