SinBala (Arcadia)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

Sinbala is an insanely popular Taiwanese joint at Arcadia covering standard Taiwanese food, snack, tea, shaved ice and desserts (hence the line never stops for the entire day).

Taiwanese Sausage with Leeks, less fatty and oily and more clean tasting than traditional Chinese. They have many sauce/sides to go with, from the more conventional garlic, leeks, chili…to mango and chocolate (didn’t have courage to try that yet).

Pumpkin Fried Rice Noodle and Oyster Pancake. They also have an extensive menu of flavorful teas and fancy drinks (Aloe tea, Jelly Tea…etc). Overall it is a good place for snacks and cheap eats if weren’t for the crowd.

Asia de Cuba (Sunset Blvd.)

//// By in 09: Weho

Asia de CubaAsia de Cuba
My co-workers and I managed to make it to the last day of the dineLA Restaurant Event at Asia de Cuba, the Asian and Latin fusion restaurant at the Mondrian Hotel. They had a $22 three courses lunch which is a really good deal for this $$$$ long-time trendy “scene” restaurant. It’s got a really nice view of the city and a great outdoor patio dining area. Originally they gave us a table that’s right next to the pool, pity that the sun was too bright and there was no shade, so we sat inside instead.

There’re 3 different choices under each of the 3 courses. For the 1st course:
Asia de Cuba
Black bean and chicken pea dumpings tomato-ginger sauce, charred tomatillo puree and citrus crema. Very delicious!

Asia de CubaAsia de Cuba
Lemongrass skewered chicken: coconut Thai chili marinade, grilled pineapple and lychee. Braise pull pork empanadas: Eggplant bell pepper sofrito, mancheago cheese, citrus salad, smoked chili dipping sauce. Both were very good. I especially love the citrus salad that came with the Empanada: thinly slices of mango, cucumber and red bellpeper with chili powder. What an interesting side! I was very impressed with all three of the first courses.

2nd course:
Asia de Cuba
Miso cured Alaskan butterfish: Cuban black bean and edamame salad, tempura shisito peppers. Amazing! Those of us who got this dish agreed that it was the winner of table. The butterfish was perfectly cooked, the meat was so moist and airy that they melt in your mouth. It’s cooked with just the right balance of sweetness and saltiness from the miso with a touch of chili powder. Highly recommend!

Asia de CubaAsia de Cuba
Mediadia (Cuban pressed sandwich of the day), Cuban BBQ chicken: Thai coconut sticky rice and avocado fruit salsa, tamarind sauce.

3rd course:
Asia de Cuba
Sorbet of the day: House made tropical sorbet served with seasonal fresh fruit chopsticks and chili fruit sauce.

Asia de CubaAsia de Cuba
Cuban Opera: Rich chocolate cake layered with milk chocolate buttercream and coffee mousse with coffee-brittle ice crea, chocolate and caramel sauces. The opera was a little “hard” and heavy.Caribbean Carrot cake: carrot cake layered with pineapple cream cheese with lemongrass rhum raisin ice cream.

What a fantastic and satisfying meal for $22. The combine of Asian and Latin cuisine’s ingredients on some dishes are interesting and quite inventive. The service was surperb. And there’re plenty of food, unlike my previous two dineLA experiences (see entry: Vin Bar Valentino, Noe in which they significantly cut down on the portions. Though I wonder if I would be as impressive with the meal if I have to pay the regular price (very $$$$)? The drinks are all at least $15 and above (ex: $15 for a small average-at-best Mojito, just…) It’s definitely a place for special occasion only.

Boule (La Cienega)

//// By in 09: Weho

Valentine gave us excuse to indulge in the quality but pricey French sweets at patisserie Boule (see our old entry).

Boule Choco 12 Pieces
12 Pieces Gift Box $28. You can select from their many flavors they offer. We choose all of the tea flavor ones (Oolong, Jasmine, Earl Grey, etc). I have to admit I prefer chocolate in solid form, rather than flavored creamy fillings.

Boule Canele
The Canele $3, have two flavors, vanilla and chocolate. They’re very well made, crispy outside and semi-firm but light inside.

The Macaron (from $2-2.5) have many exotic flavors, some are seasonal only. They are Saffron Green Tea (the brown one with candied lemon, oh so good~), Meyer Lemon, Apricot Ginger, Rose and Blood Orange. They’re so light, delicate and very good.

The Hungry Cat

//// By in 08: Hollywood

Since that last visit, we’ve gone back a few times.

IMG_0334.jpg
Cured Arctic Char with Fennel, Apple and pomegranates. Pomegranate, pretty and delicious~

IMG_0339.jpg
The Oyster Stew wasn’t a regular item. Instead they have the Smoked Haddock Chowder with Leeks and Yukon Gold Potatoes. It’s very flavorful, though the smoked fish get a bit too salty (no bread to go with).

IMG_0391.jpg
Pretty Cocktails (very good) Grapefruit Cooler

IMG_0403.jpg
Pacific Blue Prawn Carpaccio with Peppercress, Cilantro, Scallion, Peanuts and Sambal, colorful and multi-texture, pretty good.

IMG_0393.jpg
Oyster on Half Shell, so good, sooooo good~

IMG_0398.jpgIMG_0406.jpg
House smoked salmon, beluga lentils, arugula, poached Jidori Egg and Saffron Aioli$14 and Roasted Dorade, Grilled Radicchio, Endive, Blood Orange, Arugula and Pistachios $17. The grilled radicchio was a bit too burnt, but the overall dish is very tasty, colorful and not boring.

Seems like we’ve pretty much tried most of their seasonal menu, I can’t wait for more new dishes.

Hanoi (Little Saigon)

//// By in 18: Greater LA, Favorite Food Entries

We stopped by Little Saigon for some good Vietnamese food. Since it was the weekend before Tet (Vietnamese New Year, same day as the Chinese New year), the neighborhood was extremely crowded. I found several recommendations from Chowhound, though due to the insane holiday traffic we settled into the first place on the list we spotted: Hanoi restaurant. Their menu was quite overwhelming. There’re a lot of dishes not on the usual SGV’s Vietnamese restaurants.

DSCN2870.jpg
Cha Ca Thang Long (Hanoi Fried Fish with Dill). Really really delicious! It’s a classic Northern Vietnamese dish. There’s noodle and dipping sauce served on the side. It smells wonderful, love the dill, they compliment the fish really well.

DSCN2873.jpg
Bun cha Ha noi (Hanoi Grilled Pork). Another classic Northern dish. Delicious! It’s grilled pork meat served with dipping sauce, vermicelli and herb. I love the meat and sauce a lot!

DSCN2868.jpg
Banh Tom Co Ngu (Vietnamese shrimp and yam fritters) Vietnamese’s “fish n chips”. Crispy. It’s a big plate they gave us so we couldn’t finish most of it.
