RELLENO SUGAWARA (ルエノ・スガワラ)

Dinner at a restaurant serving California cuisine(The name card says "Tokyo Internation Cuisine"). Very tiny place at the basement, basic decor and very quiet - could be a little claustrophobic at first. Check out the interior here.
The little samosa(potato as stuffing I think) and prawn are complementary appetizer which is nice. Two of us chose from the a la carte menu and shared 1 appetizer, 1 risotto and two meat dishes. The service staff offered to split the dishes for us, so all the pictures are half portion, except the risotto which we had to cut it ourself.
Crispy fried crab pot stickers on chopped vegetables salad. Simple but quite good.

Lombardia taleggio cheese risotto cakes with sauteed shrimp, oregano and hot plum tomatoes salsa. Risotto cake...is just risotto. Quite spicy. Portion tiny.

Chargrilled SPF Kirishima pork with pickled pimientos, and Spanish Valdeon blue cheese and red wine sauce. The pork is okay, love the blue cheese.
Mexican lamb stroganoff with pan-fried green tomatoes, tortillas salad with jalapeno cream. Very spicy and a little salty. We both craved rice while eating this. The meat is tender.
We didn't order dessert because the friend who told me about this place said the dessert is expensive(800yen~) and very small portion so not so worth it. With a glass of champagne, it is 5000yen per person. The food is not bad, though taste-wise the food doesn't leave much impression on me. The dinner menu has rather limited choices: 1, 2.

Omurice is very nice! The egg is not the half-cooked fluffy runny kind, but still nice. The veggy on the side is a bit oily though.

A lunch set consists of salad and appetizer, a small pasta, a meat/fish dish and rice, 1350yen. With an extra 150yen, you get dessert and coffee too. Meat dish is pork shoulder meat saute in pesto sauce. Pasta is spaghetti with watarigani(crab) in tomato cream sauce. Dessert is gateau chocolat. So much food! Double carbs! Even the dessert is such a big piece. Taste not bad too.

Restaurant Cherive (シェリーヴ@目白)

Have been trying to go to this French restaurant for lunch twice by myself but both times I was turned away because it was full even I went on weekdays. So I booked in advance and dragged a friend to go with me. Like before, it was packed, with many happy and loud ladies.

Rillette of mackerel and tomato and black olives. Tastes just like tuna.
Platinum pork simmered in tomato and curry. Mashed potato and lentils underneath. Very yoshoku-feel. Curry taste non-existent.
Apple tart with mango ice-cream.
Food is a bit mediocre. Very cheap though - lunch course is 2000yen. Glass wine is 500yen~.

Hongatsuo(some fancy version of dried bonito?) soup based ramen. Usually bonito soup never works for me but I really like this one. Thought it would have been nicer if the soup were piping hot, but after reading other people's reviews, seems like the lukewarm temperature is deliberate. Noodles are perfectly cooked, the pork and the eggs are both soft and tasty. No wonder there is always a long queue. I went twice before but gave up because of the queue. This time I went early, around 11:30am, and I got in pretty quick. I sat at the counter and the staff in front of me(not the guy in pic) has his head quite interestingly shaved...seems like he is the owner. He is all smiley and softly singing(literally) irashaimase the entire time.

Christmas dinner at a low-profile restaurant with 2 friends. Reservation is via email only. My friend, who had been there before, told me that the chef might not exactly be that easy-going, so I asked the only waiter there whether I could take pictures of the food or not, and he was very friendly and told me to go ahead. I was still unsure about using flashlights even though it was pitch dark inside, hence the dark pictures. The chef came out of the kitchen when we were leaving and he seemed friendly though. The Christmas dinner course with all-you-can-drink champagne and wine, was 10,000yen per person. A very small place and only 3 groups of customers that night.

Iberico ham and chorizo. The bread is imported from France, says the waiter.

Kuruma Prawn with radish in cream sauce.
Guinea fowl and foie gras in mushroom and truffle sauce.

Roasted duck breast with apple, in butter and honey.
The chocolate cake, not baked by the chef, is the birthday cake for other customer, who generously shared it with all of us. The chef made us sing birthday song for him. ^^;;
The food is very good. A lot of meat. I like the roasted duck the most even though it is a bit sweet. The prawn dish reminds me of fried prawns with mayonnaise from those Hong Kong style cafe. The guinea fowl one tastes very chinese, despite the French-ish ingredients. This place is not exactly a French restaurant, the chef cooks all kinds of food and you can make your request.

Very thick tantan noodles without soup. It is so good!! The thick noodles are soft and chewy and go so well with the minced meat and very spicy chilli oil. I had the normal tan tan noodles with soup here before and didn't like it, but the no-soup and thick noodles version is delicious! This is only available at dinner and weekend.

Ristorante da Nino (リストランテ・ダ・ニーノ@乃木坂)

Lunch at a much hyped Sicilian restaurant.

Cute tableware. The homemade bread is very good.

Appetizer:
Arancini.
Trout carpaccio with caper.
Sarde a beccaficu: stuffed sardines with breadcrumbs.
Baked omelette with broccoli.
Pasta:
Vongole Bianco. Tastes a bit boring, great al dente though.

Fish: Red sea bream saute with orange. Rather bland...
Dessert: Zuppa Inglese.
Special lunch course is 3800yen. A glass of champagne and mineral water, came up to 5200yen. The Japanese waitress is friendly and helpful, even split the bill for each of us without our asking(some of us ordered different courses). The Italian manager however is a bit of a snob. The decor is cute but quite cramp inside. A bit overpriced given the quality. I guess someone has to pay for the posh location.

Restaurant Kobayashi (レストランコバヤシ@平井)

Complementary appetizer is sardine and butter on crackers. Tasty! While the bread is just so-so.

Appetizer from Today's menu: Ankou(angler fish) and Ankimo gelee(jelly) terrine, with green pepper and dill. Ankimo is like foie gras, slightly bitter but decently prepared that it doesn't have any unpleasant taste. The jelly makes the whole thing very refreshing and light.
Fish soup. Very thick and strong prawn taste. Would have really loved it if it were not just lukewarm.

Also from Today's menu: Hokkaido Ezo vension and foie gras pie, with chestnuts. I knew this choice would be heavy and was prepared for it, but what came out was 10 times heavier than what I expected. The pie was loaded with butter which was fine, but it was not as crispy as I would have liked...nothing is more difficult to cope with than an uncrispy pie. Furthermore, it was drowned in very strong sauce made from gibier. One bite, and I thought I could eat no more. Probably should have ordered roasted meat instead of stuffed pie. Couldn't help envying the wild duck at the table next to us.

My friend and I ordered different desserts to share. Apple tart with vanilla ice-cream. Again not crispy enough. My friend who likes to cook, said that maybe there were too many orders that the oven was overloaded and couldn't maintain high enough heat to bake crispy pies.
Lentil and banana compote, with milk sorbet. Quite simple but not bad.
Dinner course is about 5000yen but there are additional charges for most of the options on the menu. The extra charge for my appetizer and main dish was about 5000yen. House wine is 840yen per glass and not quite generous in volume. Maybe because it was right before Christmas that the restaurant was full even on a weekday, and there was a lot of waiting between the courses. The manager served alright but he was too busy. The other waitor was incredibly unmotivated and we had to ask him twice for water refills as if we were in a family restaurant. All the waiting also forced us into the unhappy situation of having to rush through our coffee and petit four at the end, even though we arrived at the restaurant pretty early....the dinner took 4 hours!

Location very local but the decor is surprisingly stylish. Service is friendly and accomodating. Three of us went and tried out the 5000yen dinner course. Everything in the pictures are included for one person.

Potato foccacia and walnut bread were so good that we simply couldn't stop eating them and even asked for a second helping. The complementary appetizer was ark shell - just simple sashimi with olive oil but very fresh and sweet.

Oyster and turnip fricassée.
Karasumi spaghetti.

Mushroom Tagliatelle. Blood orange sorbet.

Charcoal-grilled baby lamb(left pic).
The main dish is fixed for the 5000yen course, but one of my friends can't eat lamb and they kindly let her choose a different main dish from the a la carte. She had the Wagyu tail simmered in red wine(right pic).

Crepe suzette. Apple creme brulee. I like the creme brulee better.
Many choices of tea were available, also coffee and cappuccino.
Every single dish is absolutely delicious. Simple but the great combination of fresh and nicely prepared ingredients is more than enough to satisfy. I had a glass of champagne and about 2 glasses of wine, and the bill was less than 7000yen for each person - a bargain for this type of quality. Definitely a favourite!

Dinner alone at a Thai restaurant. Fried catfish with chilli, 1800yen. SPY pink Premium wine cooler, 400yen. Plain rice 300yen. Considering the location is obscure and far from Ikebukuro station and the decor isn't up to much, the menu is priced like a fancy upscale restaurant. The deep-fried catifsh is very dry, not a good choice, but so many different spices are used and the sauce is so full of flavours. Coconut milk is added so it is sweet too. I told the waitress that I can eat very hot food and it came very spicy. I was instantly hooked(to the sauce), had to refrain from stuffing the spice leaves into my mouth. The pink drink is only 4% alcohol, very sweet and artificial coloured/flavoured.

Went back again and ordered the seafood with the same sauce. There are squid, prawn, green pepper, mussel and scallop in it. Just as good as last time. Really a shame that it is so expensive, otherwise I would go back and try other things too~

Simmered duck thigh with black beer and honey. Very soft meat and sweet sauce. The duck was from France, and had a yummy layer of fat under the skin. Freshly baked fig pie and fig compote with vanilla ice-cream was a bit basic and small though. Overall, quite a bargain for the quality.

A rather local yakiniku restaurant recommended by a friend who is living nearby and is sort of a regular. We got to order stuff that are not on the menu(e.g. cow tongue sashimi and beef sashimi), and enjoy an incredible omakase course which allowed us to try almost everything on the menu. It is however an impossible task to translate the menu...in fact I can't even match the name with the right picture cos they all look the same. ^^;; Basically we tried various parts of cow, both the meat and the horumon.

Assorted kimchi. Achilles tendon in ponzu. Grilled garlic.

Cow stomach sashimi. Liver sashimi.

Cow tongue sashimi. Beef sashimi.

From here, the meat are to be grilled. The pic on the left is some fancy cow tongue. The rest...sorry, don't really remember.

The umeshu here is very nice with a variety of choices - nihonshu based, shochu based, white wine based, red wine based, and house blend. I like the house blend and nihonshu based of umeshu the most. The one in the picture is just nihonshu.

My favourite horumon "shibire", it tastes like foie gras~ Takes a while to grill until it is smooth and creamy.

The steak is nice too. The waitor cut it into pieces for us. But I prefer the fatty thin slices of beef which are just much more juicy.

We had some additional orders which I didn't take pictures of...btw, there were 5 of us, 4 girls and 1 guy. ^^;;;

Yukke - Korean version of Steak Tartare. Tontoro - fatty pork.

Horumon also, forgot name. Hard and chewy texture.

On the right is Kimchi fried rice.

The usual stomach-filling carbs(though we were already very full...): Korean beef soup rice, chilled buckwheat noodles, and ramen in a hot stone bowl. I think we paid about 12,000yen each. Considering how much we ate and drank, and how amazing the quality of the meat was, not a bad deal.
My friend actually remembered the menu in Japanese and kindly sent it to me, so I just copied here.

Terrine of Spear squid Bouillabaisse, potato and kidney beans salad in basil sauce. Smooth terrine with finely chopped squid that are still very chewy. Quite good!
Panfried baby lamb chop, Provençale style. The meat is very tender and juicy. A bit salty and the Balsamico sauce a bit heavy, but still delicious.
Coconut blanc manger and lychee sorbet. Hmm, the dessert is so-so.
A rather new French restaurant located in kagurazaka - an area crowded with little homely bistros. The price is a bit on the higher end - a 3 three course lunch where you can choose your appetizer and main dish but not the dessert, plus a glass of wine and service charge, came up to about 4000yen. The ambience is sophisticated but welcoming. Check out my friend's blog(Japanese) whom I went with.

Cold yuba udon. No water is added to make the udon apparently, only two kinds of yuba and condensed soy milk are mixed to the flour. The result is very elastic and chewy texture. You grate the ginger yourself, and add it together with the spring onion into the tsuyu dipping sauce. There is a little bottle of condensed soy milk, which the waitor told me to add into the tsuya sauce as well, giving it a smooth taste. The side dish kakiage is mainly onion, plus a piece of bitter gourd tempura. The item I love the most is actually the simple handmade tofu.

Chestnut Cappuccino: coffee ice-cream chestnut, chocolate fudge and whipped cream. "Love it" size(i.e. medium) plus waffle cup, 630yen.
The first branch of this American ice-cream shop in Japan is at Roppongi Hills. I have tried going for a couple of times but it ALWAYS has a long queue, even during odd hours like weekdays afternoon, or in winter(the waiting and eating space is outside). So I was very happy to find out that the second branch(in central Tokyo) is inside a mall at Ikebukuro. Happier still that there was no one waiting when I went during weekday lunchtime! The ice-cream is chopped and mixed with the ingredients on a cold marble stone. The much-hyped ice-cream didn't disappoint, very smooth and rich, a bit sweet in Japanese standard, but okay for me.

Dinner party at a traditional Japanese restaurant more than 100 years old. Speciality is horse meat, also called "sakura meat" in Japan.

Horse meat Tsukudani.

Two kinds of horse meat sashimi - more expensive shimofuri(meat marbled with fat), and loin meat. Somehow the cheaper loin meat is actually nicer. Both are sweet and tender.
Tartar steak - ground raw horse meat, with sesame oil, and a raw egg yolk. Very good. The sesame oil and the egg yolk combined to give the lean meat a smoother texture and a nice fragrance.

Horse meat sushi is incredible, while the grilled horse meat skewer is no good - the meat is too hard.

Sakura nabe: horse meat sukiyaki. Tender and juicy, no need to cook too long, dip into a bowl of raw egg before you eat. Also added to the nabe are leek, shirataki and fu. The warishita is miso and soy sauce and zarame sugar.

Steak. Thick cut and tender. Homemade pickles are so good you can eat them alone.

Eggs are added to the leftover soup, and you are supposed to scoop the sweet full-of-meat-flavour egg and add onto the rice. It is so yummy!
Dessert is Matcha ice-cream.
