Sushi Karen (Culver City)

//// By in 13: Culver City

I read about this place which is the recent food blog sensation, and I also heard that they get same supplies as some of the high end sushi places in LA. I must give it a try~~

I’m already impressed when I walked in and saw the specials, unlike most usual medium priced range sushi places in LA, they offer the more unusual things.

DSC03847.jpgDSC03862.jpg
Monk Fish Liver (very good!) and Sea Urchin (not the sweestest freshest but nonetheless still good, guess we need to sit at the bar to get the best stuffs).

DSC03864.jpg
Amberjack with Jalapeno, garlic and citrus sauce. The jalapeno gave just enough punch, the garlic smells so wonderful, really good.

DSC03845.jpgDSC03851.jpg
Red Snapper with Spicy Lemon Salt and Bonito, Spanish Mackerel and Amberjack (again!). All fresh and amazing~ Love the rice that’re in perfect temperature and vinegared. I usually like my sushi traditional and simple, but I really enjoyed their special sashimi and seared tuna. I’m so glad to find another good sushi place (on westside!)

Xiamora (Melrose)

//// By in 08: Hollywood

Ages ago I had the fantastic $14 business lunch course at creative Cuban/Latin restaurant Pasadena’s Xiamora (old entry), and I always love their more casual sister Cafe Atlantic. It seems that business isn’t doing so good and Cafe Atlantic was gone (became backroom of Xiamora). Since there’s another Xiamora on Melrose near our work, to catch its $14 business lunch…turns out that offer is gone too.

DSC03806.jpgDSC03808.jpg
Very yummy assorted bread and baked goods. There were some rock star and music producer looking patrons sitting up at the loft area (and downstairs too).

We stick to their appertizers that sounds not as heavy and big meal.
DSC03811.jpg
Spicy Shredded Duck Ropa Vieja on a Colombian Arepa and Mojo Tomatoes $11 with manchego cheese and watercress, and a sweet corn cake at the bottom layer. I like the flavor and it smells great…love the melty cheese with the dense spicy tomato stew. But half way the duck and sauce is getting too strong taste and salty that the sweet corn cake could only balance so much. I still enjoyed it (only because I have high tolerance of salty flavor ^^;;)

DSC03812.jpgDSC03815.jpg
We LOVE the Cuban Fried Rice from Cafe Atlantic and delighted that they have it in appertizer size here too. But…it’s not as good. The rice are way too moist and soggy. Dessert: Three Flans of Three Fruits: Guava, Mamey, Guanabana $8.00. Light and exotic sweetness, very good!

Everytime I drove by this place it seems very empty, especially at night (dinner menu is $$$$). I read from EaterLA that it’s the pretty much the same for the Pasadena branch. Hmm… (and is that big New York skyline framed photo the same one from the former Cafe Atlantic space?)

Le Petit Beaujolais (Eagle Rock)

//// By in 03: Eagle Rock

DSCN0509.jpgWe’ve dined at Cafe Beaujolais (1, 2, 3) plenty of times but this is the first time I try their lunch “counterpart” Le Petit Beaujolais, which is few blocks away across the street. Just like Cafe Beaujolais, it’s a casual French bistro/bakery that offer simple hearty french dishes. They have a extensive brunch menu on the weekend, everything are reasonably priced.

DSCN0513.jpgDSCN0516.jpg
There’re a few brunch combo dishes on the menu. Jon got the Steak + Omelette + potato($9.50) and I got the French toast + sausage + 2 sunny side up ($9.25). Great to have all my fav. brunch necessities on one plate. The French toast was great, fluffy and buttery. Jon’s steak was a bit over-done and chewy though. We ended up really stuffed and had to take a stroll in the neighbourhood for awhile.

A big minus: one of the waiters got major attitude. All we asked for (politely) was brown sugar for my coffee and a glass of water for Jon, and this particular waiter responded unbelievably snotty. Urgghhh….

101 Noodle Express (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel, Favorite Food Entries

Been craving for good cheap rustic Chinese eats. Just so happen that J. Gold did a review‘s on this place. With a generic name like “101 Noodle Express”, how good could it be!? (they do have a much better name in Chinese). But a Northern Chinese place that specialized dumplings and other Northern specialties is always worth to check out. A quick check on Yelp and Chowhound shows that it’s got quite a buzz among foodies.

DSC03833.jpg
I’m sure no one can argue, the star dish of this place is the beef roll. Very addictively delicious! The pancake is thin, chewy and crispy at the same time. Its texture goes really well with the juicy multiple flavored thin slices of beef that smell heavenly. I always really like the way Chinese flavor beef, not an expert but I think Five-Spice Powder, Star anise and Hua-jiao are commonly used? It’s definitely the most popular dish as every table have at least 1-2 order on their table.

DSC03826.jpgDSC03831.jpg
Always good to get a sweet and sour marinated Cucumber to compliment with the beef dishes. Ox-tail Soup Noodle is very good too! Good smooth hand-made noodle and the ox-tail is very soft and tender. The oxtail broth is so deeply flavored.

DSC03823.jpgDSC03837.jpg
Northern Sausage is different from the more common red color type I usually eat. The texture is similar, but this one is made of Beef (and lots of five spice powder). Good though I wish it’s more room temperature so it’s not as hard. When I saw the long list of dumplings on the menu my eyes glow. We stayed on a safer side and got the Wild Vegetable pork Dumplings. The dumplings are the Northern style which has thicker skin, but oh-so-smooth~ The fillings are a bit generic, not bad, should have been a little more adventurous.

DSCN0523.jpgDSCN0526.jpg
I went back two days later because I craved the beef roll again. Besides the beef roll I also got: Meat sauce with buck-wheat noodle (Zhajiang mian), love the meat sauce but was disappointed at the noodle. It was mushy and I could hardly taste the buckwheat. Pumpkin shrimp pork dumpling is incredible! Much better than the veggie/pork dumpling last time! I really like the combinations. Pumpkins give a subtle sweetness and the shrimp gives the dumplings a more “wonton”-ish flavor/springy-ness.

101 Noodle Express also offer another Northern specialty: Shan Dong Chicken. I didn’t have the chance to try it (with Beef roll who can stomach another meat dish?) but it seems to be a popular dishes too. Next time…

NRN Noodle (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

I haven’t frequent the San Gabriel/Alhambra area much so I’m always in awed by all these new obscure exotic regional mainland Chinese specialty restaurants popping up here and there. We saw the sign of this newly open place and went in for a try. They specialized in ONE type of noodle called Luo Si Fen from Liu Zhou City of Guang Xi province.

DSC03791.jpg
What is Luo Si Fen? According to the guide posted on their door, it’s Snail Soup Noodle. I can’t tell by the name alone (it seems to be a fancy name for Snail, maybe Escargot Soup Noodle sounds more appertizing? ^^;;). It also explained that no actual snail meat are served, they’re only used to cook the broth. The ingredients in the bowl are Sour pickled bamboo, Jew’s Ear Mushroom, Peanuts, Fried Tofu Skin, Golden Needle and beef, etc. The flavor is hard to grasp on: it’s a complex but pleasant mixture of dense spicy + sour. The rice noodle are very smooth. Very good!

DSC03790.jpgDSC03795.jpgDSC03797.jpg
Winter melon and Sour plum Juice. Snail Soup cooked Quail eggs.

The entire menu is based on that snail soup (variation of the noodles)…pretty risky (delicious but a bit too novelty/obscure to draw crowd perhaps?). Their other specialty is Duck feet.
