Sawtelle Kitchen (Sawtelle)

//// By in 12: Sawtelle

Sawtelle Kitchen used to be this charming tiny rustic yoshoku (Japanese western food) house on the westside Little Tokyo Sawtelle street. You stopped by there always for their Japanese cutlet/curry/lunch set, even when you’re by yourself. Then they closed down and bought the neighboring vintage clothes store and remodeled for what felt like half a year. They finally re-opened and…

They’ve turned $$ ‘real Italian restaurant’! Now with much bigger space, romantic ‘expensive’ looking European interior, wall of wine cellar, and a full staff. The Clam with White Wine Pasta is so-so. The menu seems to be more expensive. While you can still find the lunch set, curry and cutlet…the vibe is totally different. Now it felt like the kind of generic overpriced restaurants in LA.

Vienna Cafe (Melrose)

//// By in 09: Weho

DSC03491.jpg
Pasta Italiana($9.50) Bowtie pasta with prosciutto, wild mushrooms and a tomato sage cream sauce. Very delicious! I love the sauce, so flavorful and creamy. This place is more known for breakfast/brunch but I always get their pasta dishes (there’re only 3-4 on the menu) and they’re always more tasty than I expect.

DSC03493.jpgDSC03489.jpgVeggiEx ($8.50) Sunny side up eggs baked with spinach, tomatoes, zucchini, mushrooms and goat cheese, topped with sage hollandaise sauce and served with Vienna potatoes and toast. Although fresh, it’s also rather so-so tasting in general.

Vienna Cafe is one of the first places I blogged when potatomato food blog first started 3 years ago, which is probably the last time I ate there (note that my old entry also said “The last time I ate here was 3-4 years ago” ^^;;) Shops and restaurants change a lot on Melrose throughout the years but Vienna cafe stayed. I will always go back for the pasta, their Carbonara is delicious too.

Grub (Hollywood)

//// By in 08: Hollywood

Joan blogged about Grub before (here and here) but this is the first time I’ve tried it. Before this place was known to us as the relaxing neighborhood lunch spot near our workplace in the form of a cute little house, now we all know it as Top Chef 2’s “I cook comfort food’ Betty‘s restaurant (and her personalities are all over it with the naming of the menu the likes of “ba da bing” this, “mama mia” that).

DSC03461.jpgDSC03463.jpg
Cute veggie basket.

DSC03465.jpg
White Truffle Burger ($10.95) The menu saids “Oh my goodness, yes! Soooo good you will shout Hallalujah!” (imagine Betty’s voice saying this) She’s right! Very delicious~ 😀 The patty is (c&p from menu) Ground Beef with Wild Mushrooms, topped with Gruyere Cheese, Caramelized Onions and Arugula with Garlic Mayo, drizzled with rich White Truffle Oil. The aroma and the flavors are so rich, very wonderful~

DSC03468.jpgDSC03460.jpg
Brie with With Prosciutto de Parma and Fig-Rosemary-White Wine Jam on Dutch Crunch ($9.95) The cold hard brie are a bit blocky to eat. The unusual ingredients of the jam gave a bit of complexity of flavors. Since it’s so big and blocky to eat I can only finished half. When I took home the other half and re-baked for dinner, I like it more with softer brie. The drinks are Homemade Ginger ale and Blueberry Lemonade (a bit watery?).

Very satisfying~ It’s a happy lunch spot, quite expensive though (another Hollywood comfort food lunch spot Doughboys is cheaper).

Nicky D’s Wood-Fried Pizza (Silver Lake)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

Joan wrote about this place before. It’s my turn now (with better photos ;D).
DSC03457.jpgDSC03456.jpg
From the outside it looked like a small front-counter only operation, who knows it’s so cozy inside full of Italian retro-charm (with patio garden seatings at the back too). The giant wood oven occupied half of the interior.

DSC03455.jpg
Individual size ($8) Pesto Bravo: pesto pie with sausage, roasted red pepper, goat cheese, roasted garlic. This is so incredibly delicious! Fresh from oven, so hot and golden. I can’t resist devouring the garlic too. Love the thin crust that’s crispy but soft inside. A bit loaded with oil though.

DSC03453.jpg
Another individual size pizza (perfect to share between 2 and get to try more flavor than order 1 full size): Garlic Clam (white sauce). Peppered with salted seafood flavors, so good!

Somehow the waitress heard wrong and brought us the plain Pesto pizza: just cheese and pesto. It’s not in my character to ever order plain pizza like that…^^;; After I asked “is this Pesto Bravo? I remember it has long list of toppings…” they immediately re-baked me a new pizza.

Doughboys (Highland Ave.)

//// By in 08: Hollywood

The original Doughboys Bakery on 3rd (WeHo) is always packed with long lines. The newly opened branch in Hollywood is close to our work place so it has soon became our frequent lunch spot (and take out, how wonderful!). The menu is all comfort food. Big, heavy and hearty. But most of all the food are relatively cheap and the service is friendly. This entry includes few visits.

DSC03412.jpgDSC03443.jpg
Huge bowl of thick and gooey French onion soup, quite scary actually (feel the gooey cheese tangled in my stomach).
DSC03446.jpgDSC03417.jpg
The bread is what won me over, they’re always freshly baked and non oily, and got a lightly sweet, clean after taste. The sandwich list is dazzling. Prosciutto ham with Camembert cheese, fresh melon and arugala (the sweet melon compliment the prosiutto so well). Artichoke Sandwich (artichoke’s greeny taste and sourness is a bit too dominating, otherwise it’s like eating a plate of grilled veggie — not a fan).

DSC03415.jpgDSC03414.jpg
My friend ordered the Warm portabello mushroom Potatoes salad. (sans pancetta), the potatoes are too soggy. I got curious and ordered the PBC&B: a French toast but with peanut butter + bitter chocolate and banana. It’s insanely heavy…but surprisingly not sweet.

Their sandwiches are so huge that I can always only manage to eat half, and bringing home the other half for dinner. Though frankly speaking nothing I had here so far is really all that fantastic tasting (not bad though). It’s more about the bread, price and portion. But I think their menu in general (esp. breakfast) seems trying a bit too hard to be ‘eccentric’ (the PBC&B are under ‘breakfast’), you can say it does reflects a certain character. Not as ‘easy’ as a local neighborhood place where you can get a simple pancake or omelette. ^^;;
