Florent (NYC: Meatpacking)

//// By in 03: NYC

Joan and I went to New York to visit friends over the weekend. When we arrived it was a very late Friday night. Good things about Manhattan that LA will never have is the vivid vibrant night scene and good selection of 24 hours dining joints. Florent is a popular 24 hrs diner with a French bistro flair, cater for the partying crowd from the clubs at the Meat-packing district area. Love the vintage signages and red lightings.

My friend’s Vegetable Couscous, the couscous are mushy.

I got the Boudin Noir, blood sausage. Served hot and melty with apple slices underneath, yummy…at first! Since the portion is so huge that when I’m mid-way thru the first one it got gooey fast. I felt like gulping up pile of gooey oil. Mussels and Fries, pretty good fries~

Food not bad for a diner, not good enough for a bistro. Very generous portion, the burger ordered by the man sitting next to me looked tempting. The food would have been more satisfying if I’m tried and exhausted from partying next door (though we did get tired by the airplane in a different way).

Aroma Cafe (Overland)

//// By in 11: West LA, Favorite Food Entries

The family owned Bosnian place Aroma Cafe (see old post here) is one place I often remember fondly and wanted to come back again and again, not only because of the absolutely delicious and exotic-yet-comforting mediterranean delicacies, but most of all it felt Escape-from-LA in there.

Turkish coffee. Rich and velvety, almost Belgian hot chocolate like~

From the grilled menu: Cevapi Kebab sandwich with peppered onion on the side. It taste much better than it looks. The kebab meat are incredibly light and airy, bursting with juice and flavors. The homemade bread are so good.

DSC03500.jpgDSC03501.jpg
Deeply flavored Grilled Peppers and from the pita menu: Burek with meat. Very crispy and moist Croissant-ish crust with tasty grounded meat, herbs and potatoes inside. The waitress told us usually they’d have cheese ones and supposedly even better.

DSC03508.jpg
Hurmashice: sugar-syrup soaked cake with walnuts. Taste a bit like cake version of Baklava . Smell wonderful~

We love everything. We still have many things (the entree menu!) haven’t tried yet. But most of all I love quietness and warmth. By the way, they made their own bread and pastries, bread-lovers MUST visit.

Angeli Caffe (Melrose)

//// By in 09: Weho

Angeli Caffe is another old timer on Melrose. The asymmetrical triangular based interior suggest the once trendy 80s past, but it’s now a friendly casual Italian restaurants with mostly older, silver haired patrons.

They have many tasty appertizers. Potato croquettes with salame and smoked mozzarella Smokey and very flavored, so good!

DSC03546.jpg
Fettuccine Bolognese: rich meat sauce with dried porcini mushrooms and wine. This is incredible! The Fettuccine have this very light but highly chewy texture. The sauce is delicious. Everything is so perfectly cooked.

DSC03543.jpg
Mushroom Garlic Pesto Risotto with Scallop and Nuts I forgot the name of the nuts. Every bite is a contrast of moist risotto and crunchy chomping texture. Very good.

I can tell why this is an old favorite, I want to try everything on the menu. The chef has written many cookbooks and got her own radio show. I can’t wait to go back.

M Cafe de Chaya (Melrose Ave)

//// By in 09: Weho

Been rather uncreative and keep going back to already blogged places recently, but that doesn’t mean there’s no blogworthy food. This popular Hollywood macrobiotic lunch spot M Cafe is also my most blogged place here (old posts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5), but I still can’t resist despite the pricey food, nightmare parking and the hyped for next door neighbor Pinkberry that never dies down.

Big Mirco 10.95 Whole grain brown rice and veggie burger, special sauce, lettuce, tofu cheese, pickles, onion & sprouts on a baked whole wheat bun. Very delicious, love the tofu cheese. The side is Red Quinoa salad, first time I’ve ever tried this, reminds me of couscous. The texture is so pillowy and fluffy, very fun to eat.

Both Pistachio flavor: a Madeleine-like pastry but with chewier texture (my goodness I Love it!) and Pound cake.

Tender Greens (Culver City)

//// By in 13: Culver City

DSC03512.jpgSince certain healthy people in our crowd was reluntant to go here, we ended up next door at this salad place called Tender Greens. It seems like a fast food joint or cafeteria type of operation but with ‘healthy’ salad.
DSC03518.jpgI got the Ahi Tuna set, the teenager staffs on kitchen counter assembled this very quickly. Very fresh and clean tasting and got enough salted taste. The veggies came in barely chopped form though. My friend had a basically half chopped lettace ball. I tried my friend’s Mashed Potatoes, it was buttery and golden, good. This would be perfect for a student cafeteria or if you want quick, fast & good gourmet-ish well balanced salad meal.
