Malibu Seafood (Malibu)

//// By in 18: Greater LA

Head out to Malibu even though it was a rainy day, we had lunch atMalibu Seafood which has nice ocean view patios for seatings. I got a big bowl of Steamed Mussels for $8.95 which is a great deal. The mussels are fresh and big too. The broth (with lots of garlic) is very delicious. There are lots of big pieces of clam in the Clam Chowder, even the taste is just alright and a bit generic, it’s worth the $3.50.

Jon got the Clam Strips & Fries which is quite a miss, you can barely taste the clam as they’re covered by too much fried batter. I’m not a fan of deep fried seafood in general. It’s a pity that they don’t seem to have fresh raw oyster on the menu, and their grill fish dishes seem a bit pricey. I want to try their steamed clam next time.

Pete’s Cafe and Bar (downtown LA)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA

Met up with my friends for brunch at Pete’s Cafe and Bar which I had dinner before. When our dishes came, our first reaction is: huge portion! A big bowl of Mac & Cheese (avermont sharp white cheddar, asiago and goat cheese with tarragon and a side of mixed baby greens) which I could only finish 1/3. It’s good but not worth $11. Wish I could get it half portion for half the price. Egg Benedict.

DSCN8398.jpgJumbo size Breakfast Quesadilla, it’s way too big that 3 of us could just share this. That would have been a good idea because then we would have stomach room for the absolutely incredible Bread Pudding! I’d not had such memorable dessert for a long time. I didn’t know bread pudding could taste this good. My friend said that’s the only thing he order whenever he comes here. Since Pete’s open till 2:00 am at night, it’ll be an ideal late after meal/late night destination for dessert. Their bread pudding is a must try!

Monte Alban (West LA)

Horchata con Nieve with red cactus fruits (Jiotilla) and their signature dish: Chicken Mole Negro.
DSC01653.jpgMonte Alban is another Oaxacan restaurant on the Westside, many foodies argued it being better than Guelaguetza Palms Restaurant (or not as good). So I ordered their most basic dish. Their mole is very chocolatety and very sweet…in fact a bit TOO sweet. But it’s still very yummy, but I’d have enjoyed it more if it were chicken back/thign instead of chicken breast. Mole really haunts me, I often thought about the flavor and aroma, trying to grasp and dissect that taste in my head. ^^;;; I think their menu is generally smaller than Guel but features more seafood dishes. The interior is surprisingly spacious (since it locates inside a small strip mall). I can’t wait to go back to try their more complicated dishes.

Fatty’s & co. (Eagle rock)

DSCN8362.jpgDSCN8365.jpgBack to Fatty’s & Co., past entries here and here. Pea soup that came with the Cheese and Mushroom Ravioli. The ravioli is good but not that special, and it’s rather small portion. The pea soup was fantastic. I forgot the name of the pizza I got. As shown in picture it’s got unconventional topping, much like most of the items on their menu which are particular and exquisite. The pizza taste healthy yet also rich and tasty!
