Road to Hana (Maui)

//// By in Travel

DSC00955.jpg
The only way to Hana (eastside of the island) is through the Hana Highway. On the way, we passed by this rocky beach near Paia at Central Maui called Hookipa Beach, the water was so clear~

The Hana Highway is said to have 600+ turns, the road is dangerously narrow and curvy; we all got severe car sickness. There were so many one-lane bridges, so the opposite traffic has to watch out and yield. What a tough drive (and ride). Thankfully Yan is skillful driver. The scenary was amazing, full of exotic wild plants and tropical forest. Unfortunately I was too sick to appreciate most of the time, and when we ventured deep in the jungle I felt too sick to take photo.

Anthony Coffee Co (Maui: Pa’ia)

Macadamia Nut Icecream! Apparently this is a very popular local hang out, seems like they have many good egg breakfast dishes. I got a cute beach tote here that proven to be very useful later on.

Cafe de Amis (Maui: Pa’ia)

//// By in 05: US Other

DSC00926.jpgOnce we arrived at Central Maui airport, the first thing we did: to find a cute breakfast place. And we did! 😀 Pa’ia is a hippie vibe small town with surprisingly good select shops, boutiques, antiques, cafes. It’s the last stop before you venture to the secluded east side of the island. Cafe de Amis is a Mediterranean + Indian crepe place…with island flavor (ingredient of mango, coconut, pineapple…etc.). There’re artworks hanged all over the walls, artist patrons sketching other patrons…it’s so relax here.

Joan had the Salmon Cheviche, very very good! I had the wrap of Indian Curry Chicken with Mango Chutney and Raita (Indian Yogurt and Cucumber), so good too~

Crepe with Brie, Apple, Papaya and Pepper, it gets better with every bite. Guava Smoothie.

Very impressive food, ingredients are unpredictable and the food are prepared so delicately. What a great start for our trip~

El Conquistador (Silver lake)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

Non-stop updates before our upcoming 5 days Maui trip. 😀
DSC00901.jpgDSC00908.jpg
Fresh and strong Margarita, with an empty stomach I was hit fast, already skipping vision by 1/3. Cow Tongue with Mole, the mole is pretty good! Soft tender meat. The sides are neat.
DSC00904.jpgDSC00903.jpg
My friend’s Halibut taste alright…very normal. The fries is an Ameri-Mexican reminder. ^^;; The oily soup came with each entree is rather tasteless despite its intense look.
DSC00898.jpgI visited a friend who lives in Silver Lake on Labor Day. We walked down to see which local neighborhood restaurants were opened, turns out this Mexican bar/restaurant El Conquistador is the only operating one. The interior is like in an over-the-top mixed media painting by a crafty folk artist who’s obsessed with beads, mirror pieces, glass tubes, stained glass and bold basic colors straight from the tube.

La Galette (San Clemente)

//// By in 18: Greater LA

DSC00884.jpgDSC00889.jpg
PPV $6.95: ripe pears poached in red wine with mascarpone & vanilla sauce. This is a true delight for a pear lover like me (and LA is drought on pears), so it feels like finding a gold mine. The crepe skin is so smooth and eggy. The mascarpone is so thick but puffy~! The pears are so rich with red wine. The vanilla sauce (which I thought was honey at first) just taste like a golden touch. The picture is half portion, they split it for us so Joan and I didn’t have to fight for it. The waitress forgot our order so we sat there waiting for awhile sipping coffee. She made up by not charging our coffee. ^^;; When we passed by this hole-in-the-wall Parisian Creperie looking place (La Galette) by the San Clemente beach, I knew it would be GOOD! Small charming gem like this is what upped the intimate and romance level of a beach.
