Pepy’s Galley (Mar Vista)

//// By in 11: West LA

I read about the Mexicana breakfast Chilequilles here and Pepy’s Galley is where people recommended getting. Pepy’s Galley is inside a bowling alley. Like the bowling alley, the diner also seems to be frozen in time. Chilequilles is listed under Spanish breakfast, indeed one scary fattening breakfast ^^;; It’s basically deep fried corn tortilla chips with loads of cheese and chiles. The chips were still crunchy at first but they got soggy as I ate slow. It’s totally trashy tasting, I need cleansing badly! ^^;; I think I’d enjoyed more if it were the soft tortilla chips with mole sauce. I have to say I’m actually more in awe by the time warping mid-century vibe diner and the patrons (white hair folks, cops, etc.)

Authentic Cafe (Beverly Blvd.)

Hummus Salad, the pita bread is INCREDIBLE! So soft and chewy, too good! Brie and Papaya Quesadilla, love the sweet fresh papaya with the melted cheese.
DSC00581.jpgAuthentic Cafe is one of those neighborhood places I always pass by but never ever thought of going in. Someone recommended my friend this place in a party. The next time we drove, we decided to check it out. The menu is the very opposite of ‘authentic’ ^^:; it’s totally eclectic Californian! You’d find enchiladas, Chinese dumplings, Cajun chicken, pizza, burger, horchata…etc. The food is very good and tasty with unpredictable ingredients though.

Three Pasta

//// By in Food: Kitchen

It’s been awhile we post an entry on our own cooking. We’re still in pasta cooking stage ^^;;
DSC00594.jpg
I got the recipe from Jonathan who got it from a Naked Chef book. A simple and easy to make pasta that’s refreshing for the hot weather. Basil, Tomato with Red Wine Vinegar: chopped grape tomatos, fresh basil leaves and garlic into pieces and add in sea salt and red wine vinegar. Mix them well with the pasta and that’s it. It’s that easy. When Jon first made it he didn’t have red wine vinegar so he just mix red wine and vinegar. Totally works too. 🙂

Mentaiko: cream + butter mixed in with mentaiko. We mistakenly added WAY too much butter…
DSC00610.jpg
Bolognese: grounded beef cooked in butter + olive oil, 30+ crushed cherry tomatoes, onion, garlic, salt & pepper, white wine. The sauce was cooked for over 30 minutes. Even though we didn’t have herb, it taste really good~ The sauce totally sink into the meat. Success! 😀

India’s Oven (Beverly Blvd)

//// By in 09: Weho

Our original destination Fish Grill didn’t open due to Tisha B Av (a Jewish holiday), so India’s Oven right across the street became our immediate plan b. Samosa (potatos and pea), fresh and hot. Charles and Juan both got the Chicken Tandoori lunch special.

DSCN7794.jpgDSCN7788.jpg
Rob got the Vegetarian lunch special, not too sure what Saadi’s was…seems like Chicken?

DSCN7799.jpgI got the Lamb lunch special. The lamb was a bit hard to chew, I wish it wasn’t so overcooked. The sides are good though. All the lunch specials came with Matar Paneer (green peas and cheese curry, my favorite), Daal Makhni (Lentils spiced mildly), rice, Naan, Salad & Rita. The lunch special is a lot of food for under $8, very reasonable price. I haven’t try enough Indian restaurants in LA, but of fews I’ve tried this is definitely a much better one than the others.

Scoop (Koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

More exotic flavor gelato~ (see old entries: 1, 2.) I had the Lemon Ginger and Raisin, Walnut with Gorgonzola. I’m so addicted to the later. There’re large crumbs of actual gorgonzola cheese inside, it’s the ever exciting sweet vs salty taste! The crispy crunchy walnut add a very nice touch. It’s my favorite of Scoop’s flavor so far. Joan has Pistachio with Orange Blossom Water and Black Tea and Plum, she loves the later.
