Millie’s (silver lake)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

DSCN7971.jpgFinally try Millie’s, a run-down neighbourhood favorites that’s known for their brunch. The Huevos Rancheros is good but I wish I got the Usual: sausages, potatos, french toasts and eggs instead! The french toasts are absolutely heavenly~~ Though the coffee mug was a bit icky in condition, the rimmed was all scratched and worn out….icckkk. Reminds me of “dai pai dong” at Hong Kong. ^^;; Their menu seems like just standard breakfast fare. I’m a little surprised that their food is not that cheap though. The food is pretty much same price range as chichi places (at i.e. Larchmont/WeHo/Venice). I also noticed the absence of dogs, an usual annoyance at most Silver lake and Los Feliz cafes on the weekends.

Tofu Festival (Little Tokyo)

//// By in 18: Greater LA

More like a Asian American cultural fair featuring local Asian business and soy products. The entrance fee was $8, and still have to pay for food from individual booth. -_-;;;
DSC00628.jpgDSC00625.jpg
They called this tofu-filled Okonomi-yaki the “Japanese Pizza.” Bad of course (it has frozen green peas and carrot cubes and no flavor), but it was still one of the most popular: the line was long and many people asked me where I got it.

The most yummy food are the festive ones from Thai food booths. Though they don’t seem to be tofu related… The 2 tofu on the right are from the Maison Akira booth. Just a block of cold tofu with sauce pour on top…?

The longest queue was Island Dango’s sweet deep fried dango. Soy yogurt: Lemon Ginger and Cherry (scoop from their product). I was disappointed that I couldn’t find my most wanted tofu Cheese mousse or tofu custard. There wasn’t much innovative tofu-themed food offerings.

Jade Cafe (silver lake)

Both Jon and I have been eating heavy and greasy these days so we thought of trying this vegan/raw food restaurant for some “cleansing”. Jade cafe has a fushion “creative” menu. There’re some interesting and rather unusual ingredients. They also have lots of exotic weird “healing” elixir. Forgot which one we got, it’s very herby and healthy tasting. Reminds me a bit of Kombucha. Not sure how effective it is ^^;;

DSCN7958.jpgDSCN7959.jpg
The Spa Salad: I think “walking into a jungle with open mouth” pretty much sum up this dish. Veggie overdose! Originally I wanted to get the Ginger Coconut noodles (sound good!) but it was sold out for the night, so I settled for Cheese and Spinach Pastries: cream cheese spinach and mushroom stuffed pastries over smooth carrot marinara and arugula pesto garnished with caramelized butternut squash spirals. This is yummy! Fresh and light tasting, multiple flavors.

The overly designy slick modern asian-inspired interior + organic vegan/raw food health elixir = Very west LA~~ I’m surprised this place is not located at the west side.

Tacomiendo (Culver City)

//// By in 11: West LA

DSC00617.jpgDSC00619.jpg
Back here!. Horchata (very cinnamony, very good!) and Taco salad with lengua (cow tongue), pretty good but a rather straightforward one, not as much flavored as I’d like. I had to spice it up with a lot of sauce and lime juice myself.

Musha (Torrance)

//// By in 17: South Bay

We wrote about the Santa Monica one long time ago, I finally tried the one at Torrance. My impression was not as good, it was overcrowded, the corner we sat at had no fan that my eyes were teary from the smoke.

Grilled beef and cow tongue, delicious!

Grilled Stingray, smells very good~

Stuffed Eggplant, and the ultimate Japanese comfort food Takotama, I forgot I ordered it before and thought it was no good. We also had the cheese risotta and a kimchee dish. I thought the menu at Santa Monica branch was better.
