Niagara-on-the-Lake

//// By in Travel

lake03.jpgNiagara-on-the-lake is known as possibily the prettiest towns in Canada and I can definitely see why. The scenery on the way driving there is breathtaking, lots of trees, beautiful hertiage Victorian houses, wineries, grand mansion…so different from the dried-up palm tree beachy west coast! It’s definitely an escape from the mainstream commercial tourisy Niagara Fall area (which is about 20 min away). It’s also a historic landmark where the famous bloody battle in which the Canadian + British fends off the American invaders (so this area has lots of British flags and buisnesses ^^;;).

DSC04119.jpgDSC04120.jpgThe weather there is ideal for grape growing so there are lots of Vineyard and famous wineries. We did end up spending an afternoon hopping different wineries for wine tasting and bought lots of ice wines, they taste so heavenly~~ In fact this area is considered the most respected producer of Ice wine in the world, so I heard. I also visit one ice wine winery when I went to Rocky Mountain, but Niagara-on-the-Lake are way more beautiful and elaborate. You drove in the country road along the side of lake, and there’s signs pointing to you make a turn into various wineries. The above pictures are from Inniskillin Winery, the largest and most commercial operation. There’re buses of Japanese tourists here. We came here after told by other wineries that this is the only place that has Cherry Icewine (just as heavenly~ more grape flavor than regular kind~). A glass of wine tasting is usually $8. We also went to many smaller wineries, we bought boxes of wines here and there, one particularly made their own ice wine chocolates that I bought a few for coworker gifts. 😀

Taxali Show (Queen St.)

//// By in Collection, Travel

DSC04013.jpgDSC04015.jpgIn Toronto, we even caught an art show~ Magic Pony Gallery on Queen street is part gallery part designer toys shops. It has a nice Blythe section (some of the limited edition ones cost $300!!!). So the show is called Taxali – The original Toy Monkey, The New Art Toy From Gary Taxali. Gary Taxali is known for vintage 20s commercial graphics inspired silk-screen pictures, I LOVE them~~ He was born in India and emigrated to Toronto. In the store they have quite a few of his prints for sell, most ranged from $30-60. We debated a long time wanting to buy one but then we can’t get over the fact some of the coolest ones were sold already. If we can’t have those then we’re not having it at all. ^^;;

Red Tea Box (Toronto: Queen St.)

//// By in 00: Canada

DSC03992.jpgDSC04004.jpgDSC04006.jpgWe stopped our pace at this window, admiring the smooth colorful sugar flour coated cakes on displayed, only realize a little signs said they have a tea salon. INSIDE at once!!! X-D Joan and I each order a ‘cup’ of tea, by ‘cup’ size they meant serving in Chinese purple clay teapot. ^^;; Assam – Nahorhabi (the milk is in the Indian floral mini teapot and sugar in the mini bowl~) and White Cloud .

DSC04010.jpgDSC04002.jpgKaffir Lime Coconut Mango Curd Tart and Chocolate Salty Caramel with Lava Salt Brittle Despite looking a bit rough the taste is very good. I never had anything ‘salt’ with Chocolate before, they’re surprisingly compatiable~ It gets a bit too sweet when I uncovered the caramel inside.

DSC03993.jpgDSC03994.jpg
The front is the cakes, chocolates, cookies and treats shops. At the back there’s a living room-like space for cafe area. The interior is very eclectic, very nice. My chair was a rocking chair! The stairs led to a boutique upstairs selling teapots and kitchen goods. The owner and chefs were these Chinese ladies.

Vienna Cafe (Toronto: Queen St.)

//// By in 00: Canada

DSC03970.jpgDSC03979.jpgAfter a day of dismal tourist food, we found this cute little cafe on Queen St. for breakfast (FINALLY!!! XO). All the cups and plates are hand painted by themselves, so cute~~

DSC03967.jpgDSC03971.jpgInterior is tiny and old with vintage furnitures, cute jars and contemporary French indie rock covers of Serge Gainsbourg songs in the background. Obviously the place is not used to tourist at all, we totally threw the waitress off when she had to calculate the bill in US dollars ^^;;; a very nice customers helped us out with the calculation.

DSC03978.jpgDSC03972.jpgEggs with Lemon-dill cream and ham, sauteed potato and pepper on the side. The eggs are shaped like little whip cream, so cute~ it’s very good! 😀 The toast is a bit too burn and hard though.

Toronto

//// By in Travel

toronto01.jpgtoronto02.jpgLeft pic: Toronto Downtown view from the island. Right pic: random historic houses nearby Queen St. It’s one hour and a half driving distance to Toronto from Niagara. Unfortunately we didn’t do any research so we have no idea where to go or what to do. Joan and I only heard of Queen St. at Toronto Downtown. Turns out on that very same morning there’s some massive protest (Jews & Isaral related) where lots of streets were closed off, causing the already narrowed and crowded streets of Downtown all the more impossible to move about. In addition there’re trams going back and forth. It’s an absolute nightmare for my parents so we had to escape to the pier.

So we headed off to the Toronto island by a ferry. Turns out there’re some Nike sponsor Marathon event happening in the island, so we were swamp by people in orange shirts. ^^;;; Then the rain came pouring down. We can’t do anything (the island park itself ain’t that awesome anyway) so we headed back to the city. -___-;;;;

queen01.jpgqueen02.jpgBy the time we went back, the protest crowd disburst already so we can explore the city. In a lucky turn we found Chinatown (much bigger than LA’s). Finally my parents were desperate for Chinese food so they split off to Chinatown, whilst Joan and I went back to Queen St.. Thank god for this stop so it redeemed Toronto in our eyes ^^;;; Queen St. is much like LA’s Silverlake or Seattle’s Capitol Hill, where the graffiti-covered streets looked ghetto but it’s a hipster hangout with lots of record shops, cool boutiques, cafes, galleries. ^^ Other entries on Queen St: Vienna Cafe, Red Tea Box, Taxali’s Toy Monkey.
