Julienne (San Marino)

//// By in 02: Pasadena

Back to work today, but yesterday I lunched alone at Julienne, a French cafe in San Marino (a rather upscale suburb nearby my house). It has a gourmet boutique right next door selling lots of yummy stuffs. I bought this thing called “terrain” (pate-ish thing layered like a terrain for flatbread or biscuits) there for parties before.

The cafe interior is very tiny, most tables are outside at the patio. I didn’t dare to snap picture of the side of wall full of huge mirrors, rococo draperies and oil paintings 🙁 The interior is decorated with lots of huge deer heads and lights made from prongs, a bit much for the small space…

Sandwich: Roasted Lamb with Caramelized Onions, Avocado and Basil Aioli (yum! I tried to eat other things from their limited menu but I always go back to this one)

Pastries: they have no regular menu for dessert, so they have a sample tray to show you what’re the pastries of the day. Though I’ve tried the rice pudding (the far rightest) before, errr…didn’t like it. I got the chocolate one, yum!

DSC00319.jpg OK this is one of the “what the hell?!” thing I’ve ever encountered. This freaky antique mannequin is RIGHT inside the bathroom of the cafe. It always give me a jump when I go in there. More absurdly, the mannequin face right across you when you’re peeing at the toilet seat…gazing at you with her blank stare. The entire bathroom is decorated with an old antique French look, which in this case only added on the creepiness…^^;;

Atlantic Cafe (Old Town Pasadena)

//// By in 02: Pasadena

Lunch at Atlantic Cafe, a Cuban cafe at the cold side of Old Town Pasadena. It sure looks too slick to be authentic, but oh well ^^;; I like to go there because it is always the only restaurant with empty tables even on a crazy Friday night (it should be a bad thing ^^;;).

DSC00255.jpgDSC00262.jpg
They have very good bread: dry round milky biscuit and golden crispy bread with butter inside (wish I knew their names).

I tend to order the same thing everytime: the Creole-Cuban Fried Rice. It has avacado, plantain (fried banana), shrimp, ham steak, egg, onion and dried-shrimp (just like the Chinese ones). If weren’t the avacado, it seems just like a Chinese + Indonesian dish. ^^;; It’s very strong taste and salty (with soysauce-like flavor?), though the rice is too moist for my Chinese-fried-rice taste background ^^;; Yummy! The drink is Malta con Leche, another item I will always get. They said it’s a popular drink in Cuba: mixed of condense milk with Cuban Malta Soda. It taste like a yummy mixed of coffee + cocoa + soda + this. Though I remember the first time I ordered it they served it to me without milk. The new waitress seems clueless and was asking me how it taste like (with a worried face ^^;;), and kept telling me she tried it and felt it taste like weird tasteless coke. I told her it tasted like that Malt-Vitasoy drink that I grew up with in HK, and told her to serve it with milk. Then she finally woke up, “Oh yeah I forgot, it should be served with condensed milk.”

Casbah Cafe (Silver lake)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

DSC00223s.jpgDSC00224.jpgDSC00221.jpg

Spent a great day at Silver Lake. We had lunch at Casbah Cafe, a Morrocaan cafe+boutique with a French and Mediterrian-inspired menu…the outdoor and interior is so beautiful, very bohemien and ethnic.

We shared the “Trio Plate”, which consist the Italian salami, Prosciutto and turkey ham, very yummy. They also has the Mediterrean dessert Baclava which I like a lot (a deli nearby IF has it too). The cafe has a little boutique at the back, it has lots of unique clothes and exotic ethnic stuffs (including these water container from Mainland China…gosh when I was little I used to hate them so much whenever I see them at the hotels during family trips to China^^;;)

California Canteen (Studio City)

At night we went to California Canteen which locates nearby Universal Studio, a really nice cozy little place full of vintage Matador posters, Spanish guitars, anitque clocks and mirrors! Despite the somewhat sloppy presentation,  the onion soup was good. So rich in flavor yet not creamy, reminds me of the really nice ones at Las Vegas’s Paris hotel’s Mom Ami Gabi. But the salad was too oily with too much olive oil. The dessert’s presentations were so sloppy too (maybe they were rushing to try to kick us out as we were the last customers) but they were all very yummy.

Figaro Cafe (Los Feliz)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

DSC00173.jpgDSC00156.jpgDSC00158.jpg

Went to Los Feliz for Lunch on Friday. We were attracted by the authentic looking French zinc bar and Art Nouveau decor of Figaro Cafe. The stain glasses are said to be more than 150 years old. There’s an old antique film projector and screen inside too. But….
