Kogi

//// By in 21: Food truck

kogi truck
Finally tried the famous Kogi, the Korean BBQ “fusion” taco truck that started the whole “hip” food truck trend. Kogi rarely make stops around where I work, so when we found out from the very useful Find LA food Truck that it’s stopping near Amoeba one evening, a group of us head out for it immediately. Kogi is known for long queue due to its popularity, but the line wasn’t so bad when we were there. We waited perhaps 10-15 mintues or so.

Korean Short rib taco $2

Excuse the messiness, the sauce spilled all over due to the walk back to the office. The tacos are pretty good! The short rib was tender and it’s hard to go wrong with the Kalbi sauce. The chopped veggies and sesame seeds are nice touch that works well with the meat. I also got the Korean Spicy pork Burrito (not in picture) which I brought home for Freda. The sauce is spicy and sweet, it’s delicious (and filling) as well.

My friends got the Kogi Sliders and dessert ChocoLate Tres Leches.
The meat is the same as the tacos, my friend actually preferred the sliders over the tacos because he thought the slider bun tasted better with the meat than the tortilla. The Chocolate tres leches was surprisingly yummy, inside is tapioca milk.

Now I can kind of see what the fuss is all about, and I like they’re so cheap. But I don’t think it’s worth to wait in line for more than 20 minute (I heard people once waited at least an hour for it?). I’m glad I waited till the hype die off to try it.

Mercantile (Sunset Blvd)

Merchantile

For the past year my coworkers and I have been eagerly waiting for this place to open because it’s just right down the block from where we work. For months we speculated what it’ll be, a cafe? an expensive sit-down restaurant? Turns out it’s a wine bar + deli called Mercantile. Everyone was delighted as there’s a serious lack of affordable gourmet places in the area. Another mediocre and generic run-of-the-mill burger/sandwich/salad type of place is the last thing we need.

It’s kind of fascinating to see the beautiful yet run down Spanish building that I’ve walked by for years being restored and renovated. They definitely do a good job with the exterior and interior. I went in late afternoon on their official opening day to check it out and they gave us lots of samples to try: Canele, truffle, ice-cream, croissant…etc etc. Everything tasted delicious, particularly the Canele which is not commonly found in this city! The sandwich and salad items on the menu sound very interesting too.

Next day (and basically for the rest of the week) we went back during lunch. It’s “order at the deli counter and get a number” type of system and since they’re still new, things didn’t run smoothly as expected. There’s congestion at the cashier and it took a long time to pay for the food. One time I ordered a soup +  pastry to go and it took forever to just paid for them. And then it took awhile to get the soup because they’re busy making the food for other customers who dine there. I felt like they should have a different system for take-out customers.

The Herbed Cruyere popover was really good. I had it with their daily soups (I’ve tried clam chowder and broccoli and cheese so far, both are really good, gourmet tasting and rich).

merchantile Italian- La Quercia Prosciutto Rossa, Burrata, Peppers in Oil $8.50
I was delighted to see that they have a simple Prosciutto sandwich on the menu since I always have cravings for it (esp. the ones from Larchmont wine and cheese). Their prosciutto sandwich is slightly different due to the different type cheese, peppers and the lack of greens, but I love it just as much. The Baguette has good texture and is in European size.

Reuben Sandwich – Slow cooked corned beef, comte gruyere, house-made special sauce and sauerkraut slaw $9.50
My coworker got this and it was so incredibly delicious that I got it the next day. Multiple flavors in each bite, the beef was good and everything works so well together. Love the sauerkraut slow very much.

The food was served a little slow due to the crowd and there were a few mix up in orders, but the people who work there were being very apologetic about it and gave us a Tuna stuffed bellpepper and cinnamon roll for compensation. What good service!

Hazelnut pumpkin tart – a seasonal special, right amount of sweetness with subtle hazelnut flavor, very tasty.

The Canele are AMAZING! They’re $2.50 each, which is slightly cheaper than the ones at La Brea Bakery and the no longer open Boule. Mercantile’s taste better too. If you haven’t try this small French pastry that has caramelized crust with soft custard center before, give it a try, you’ll be hooked!

I cannot rave enough about this place. Everyone at work was delighted that finally there’s a good gourmet place to go to. The price isn’t exactly “affordable” but it’s not bad either (esp. for the quality you’re getting). They have a different menu for dinner as it function more as a wine bar, so it’s mostly small plates and cheese. Though the Cuban sandwich is available as well as Croque Madame. It’ll be a good place for a glass of wine and some snack after work, can’t wait to try it!

Mackie Kitchen (Hong Kong: Causeway Bay)

//// By in 09: Hong Kong

This is the last of the Hong Kong entries. Before leaving we check out Mackie Kitchen, an extension of the upstair bookshop Mackie Study that was sadly closed down earlier this year.

Mackie kitchen

Indie, art, cultural places like this are extremely rare in this finance-centric city, where only chichi/business-chic/high end place are valued.

The space is also used for shows and events (indie band, gallery, etc.). It’s a good information gathering place to find out what cultural events are happening in the city.

Each table is guarded by a different handmade doll. I love our elephant!

The handmade menu is very cute!

Mackie kitchenIMG_7176

The food is typical cafe food. We got the pasta set. Home cooking tasting, not bad at all!

Black forest Cake. The Hong Kong style Black forest cake  was my childhood favorite, it is a lot lighter and has jello in between. Though this one is a bit dry and has too much cream. The food are not amazing, but I still love the whole experience because of how cute the space is!

In the back of the cafe, they have a bookshelf stocking many new + past issues of art/cultural magazines, especially of China’s City Pictorial Magazine. We bought many issues. I’d hang out everyday here if I live in Hong Kong.

I finally get through all the travel entries. Back to LA next (lots of update coming)!

The Table (Hong Kong: Causeway Bay)

//// By in 09: Hong Kong

Last morning in Hong Kong. We won’t waste any last minute shopping, but alas, most shops don’t opened till noon or 1:00pm. We needed a place to hang out for awhile, any Hong Kong style joint are out of question (most restaurants don’t open until 11-noon) . We can’t possibly go to Starbucks!? (which is crowded btw, because HK is in serious lack of these sit down, slow-pace coffee house).

Then we came upon a newly open restaurant that actually open early and serves western style breakfast: The Table.

IMThe tableThe table

The menu is typical continental flair, seems like the kind of place I’ll eat often if I live nearby.

Plain simple breakfast.

The bear doesn’t look as cute as in the photo.

GOD

Nice place that reminds me of the places at yuppie west side. It is located inside G.O.D., a quirky Hong Kong lifestyle brand rooted in retro HK aesthetics. There’s a very cool bookstore on 1st floor as well.

Honeymoon Dessert (Hong Kong)

//// By in 09: Hong Kong

IMG_7166IMG_7161
Honeymoon Dessert is a popular Hong Kong sweets chain you can find in various locations. Their menu is huge. I got the Mango Pancake, a thin, soft crepe-like wrapping with mango and cream inside. It taste fresh and yummy. The modern decor, packaging, high end mall location made the experience felt soulless though.
