CangLangTing 沧浪亭 (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

Quick and cheap noodle at this popular noodle joint (a famous old place from Suzhou Province) called CangLangTing, which is named after a famous Suzhou landmark.

Suzhou Noodle Mixed with Scallion,Oil and Soy Sauce and Mushroom and Tofu Noodle (each 8 RMB, about US$1.50 or so). I like the noodle’s texture (very springy) and the broth was yummy. Though the former one was a bit oily as expected.

There’re lots of BBQ/marinated snacks you can ordered from the deli section, but since our stomachs still doesn’t feel so well so we didn’t order any. Maybe because it’s a weekday, the patrons were all old women. The waitress was really bitchy and rude though.

Xin Jishi 新吉士 (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

As this was our first trip to Shanghai, we felt obligated to check out Xintiandi, a ‘The Grove/Americana’-ish place that screams ‘tourist trap’. We went there for dinner. Out of all the restaurants there (mostly expensive chichi place and chains, there’s a Din tai fung there too), Xin Jishi sounded most appealing as it’s a revamp of the famous “Jessie Restaurant.’ They specialized in modern presentation of traditional Shanghai cuisine.

A very tasty Spicy Crab Glass Noodle Claypot. The best dish of the night.

The Xiao Lung Bao is so so (thick skin, generic soup).

Their setup and menu is similar to Yuan Yuan, but Yuan Yuan seems to have better branding, decor and food. Xin Jishi lacks character, I was left with a ‘blah’ impression as I left the door. Perhaps the original ‘Jessie Restaurant’ would be better. Also the entire area of Xintiandi has little appeal to us (expensive shops, empty chichi all-look-same bar, cheesy jazz or cover band, bus loads of tourists…etc etc), definitely wouldn’t want to go back.

Tu’an XieWeiGuan 图安蟹味馆 (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

October is the season of the regional Shanghai Mitten Crab (Hairy Crab), a famous Shanghai Delicacy famous for its rich roes. We found this restaurant specialized in crab called Tu’an Crab Tasting House at the French Concession area near the Library.

IMG_0510IMG_6988

You’d come upon a pool of the crab on your way up to the entrance. The interior is typically Chinese banquet style.

IMG_6971

Stirred Fried Crab with Roe and Herbs. So Delicious! The flavors were rich and complex. You eat them with the toast.

IMG_6980

Jumbo Crab Soup Dumping. The soup was very rich as well (apparently you don’t eat the bread).

IMG_0515

Here’re the Mitten Crabs! Knowing how rich they are we ordered the smaller size (around 150RMB each).

IMG_0513IMG_6986

Their own brand of Shanxi Vinegar (can be bought at the front desk) is blended with honey, dried orange peel and hawthorn so it’s sweeter. There’re specific steps to eat the crab that our friend showed us (the photo above is step 2, after step 1: taken off the shell of the back side and sucked its roe). We tried hard to follow her and frankly the sight of the crab being deconstructed is not pretty. Since our crab was small, the legs were very challenging to eat. But the crab flavor was fresh and  sweet. It’s nothing I’ve ever had (the frozen, bland flavorless crab here) could come close.

The ugly aftermath…we felt so accomplished afterward. We also got a plate of Crab Legs with Asaparagus.

Crabs are considered very ‘cold’ (Yin) in Chinese medicine, so they gave you Ginger Tea (hot/Yang) to balance.

Apparently I heard that there’re lots of fake Hairy crab on the market because it’s been overfished and the demand is high. I wouldn’t be able to tell anyway…

People 7 (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

A short walk from our B&B is Julu Road, one of my favorite roads in Shanghai. There’s a great bookstore called Dukou Bookstore which I like a lot. After we spent a good amount of time there we headed off to People 7 down the street. People 7 is a “trendy” lounge + restaurant that served modern Chinese cuisine. Its original branch is in Taipei.

People 7People 7

There is no sign and the entrance seems like a dead end (as seen in the picture, at the top of the stairs there’s only two blank wall on each sides and a wall with 9 lights facing you). Apparently you suppose to get a “code” when you make reservation in which you touch the lights in certain pattern to get in. We didn’t make reservation so I just slammed the wall on the left few times and it slided right open. The first two floors are the bar/lounge area, it’s quite predictably trendy and was way too dark. The restaurant is on the upstairs patio.

A pretty tall glass of Kiwi juice.

IMG_6953

People 7 House Salad 48: Mango, Grapefruit, Apple, Crab, Shrimp, Lettuce. It’s pretty to look at but I’m not sure the combination worked. I didn’t like the mayonnaise-based dressing that is often used in salad at Asia. I felt like something more acidic would be better.

IMG_6954

Spare Ribs in Plum Sauce 58  Like a high end version of Sweet and Sour Pork but it’s still yummy. The flavors were controlled and the meat had perfect crispy + chewy texture.

IMG_6955

Sichuan Stone Cooked Fish. It came as a bowl of stones, then the server poured the spicy broth and fish (already cooked) into it. It’s very spicy but very good.

IMG_6958

Three Bite Rice: Mini DongBo Pork, Mapo Tofu, Egg Fried Rice 38. We tried to stuff ourselves at the end but turns out it’s really as mini as the menu said.

IMG_6962

Green Tea Rice Balls, Wine Dreg, Osmanthus, Nata de coco in Sweet Wine Soup. Very delicious! It’s icy and refreshing. It’s the only dish that I got the ‘Nouveau Chinese Chic’ feeling.

The food was tasty and fun to eat, but it’s not as high concept as they claimed. The menu description was cleverly written by a good copywriter. After this dinner, three of us had upset stomachs that never really fully recovered for the rest of the trip. I wonder what caused it (I wonder if it’s the Wine Dregs or the Sichuan peppers).

Song Fang Maison de Thé (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

As I mentioned before, we realized tea (or coffee) breaks were very essential in Shanghai for us. As we like to explore a city by foot, Shanghai could be stressful to navigate around due to the crazy drivers and endless constructions in the city. Even taking taxi cab could stress you out too (i.e. bad traffic, dangerous driving, grumpy taxi drivers etc etc.)

Song Fang Maison de thé

Thank god for all these cute cozy tea houses and cafe spotted around the French concession neighbourhood (It’s our favorite part of town in Shanghai)! After a long day of walking, we dragged our tired feet into Song Fang Maison de Thé, a pretty tea house/shop in a converted lane house in the French concession area.

Song Fang Maison de théIMG_6933

The first floor is retail where u can buy different kinds of Chinese tea leafs as well as French tea in their signature tin cans. 2nd floor is a spacious pretty tea room that serves tea and homemade dessert.

IMG_0443Song Fang Maison de thé

I love those vintage tin boxes! The tea menu was kind of overwhelming as there are many tea to choose from.

Song Fang Maison de thé

Song Fang Maison de théI got a tieguanyin (premium oolong) that has white flower fragrance and fruity flavor. I love it, very crisp, calming and refreshing. Three of us got different tea (forgot what Freda and Angie got) and they were served in different types of teapots. One of them was an Yixing clay teapot which I like a lot. If you order non Chinese tea, they’re served in Song Fang’s signature robin blue teapot set which is lovely too. Occasionally the server would come back and pour more water into the teapot, afterall good tea leafs can be brewed multiple times.

Song Fang Maison de thé

We got the homemade Earl Grey ice-cream. It’s rich in tea aroma and not too sweet, very good !

Song Fang Maison de thé

I love their gorgeous signature porcelain teapot set with the logo so  I bought the teacup + plate set home.
