Wang Jia Sha (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

We wanted a light dinner after an exhausted arrival day. Shanghai’s most famous snack: Soup Dumplings (Xiao Lung Bao) would have been quite perfect.

We went to the famous Wang Jia Sha that’s located at the heart of  WuJiang Road Food Street.

Crab Roe Soup Dumpling. At first glance they didn’t look right, where is the dot of Crab Roe on top of each dumpling as displayed on their photos? Then the taste…very oily and not particularly flavorful. The skin was normal quality as well.

The soup inside wasn’t that pleasant to drink. The crab roe infused soup are usually very rich, but this oily-ness is beyond my standard. I actually had to spit out the soup. It made me wonder…did they mix in pork oil in the soup to make cheat the content?

Ouch…not an enjoyable Xiao lung bao experience on our first night. Fortunately this was the last bad xiao lung bao we had in the trip.

Yang’s Fry Dumpling 小杨生煎館 (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai

Wujiang road food streetWujiang road food street
One advantage of the location of JIA is that it’s very close to WuJiang Road Food Street. Wujiang Road is a short street filled with local small restaurants selling snacks and cheap eats. Some places are definitely more popular than others, you can tell from how long the queue is. Almost every guidebook tells u about Yang’s Fry Dumplings. “Fry Dumplings” are called Sheng jian bao in Chinese. It’s small bao filled with pork and soup inside and are pan-fried till the skin became crsipy and golden.

The pan-fried baos were really good! The skins were perfectly crispy, and it’s really juicy inside. The meat inside was tasty too. Beware of the hot soup when you bite into it though. Freda accidently broke the skin of one of them so the juice all leaked out onto the tray. I like that these are bite size too. Forgot how much they cost but they basically cost nothing…about something like US 40 cents.

I found Wujiang food street to be a little too short and not “dense” enough to be a proper good food street though . It probably used to be longer with a lot more food stalls but they got shut down or “modernized”, which is a pity.

54-60 Wujiang Lu, there’s outposts in many other locations including one at Huang-he road which is another “food street”, will report later.

JIA Shanghai Hotel (Shanghai)

//// By in 08: Shanghai, Travel

We’re back from our trip to Shanghai and Hong Kong. We had an amazing time at both cities. In the short six days we spent in Shanghai, we stayed at 2 different hotels at 2 different neigbourhoods and had 2 different experiences.

JIA Shanghai hotelJIA Shanghai hotel
The first place we stayed at is the designy chic JIA Shanghai. It’s locates at a touristy area (Nanjing xi road) surrounded by nothing but malls. It’s not as interesting but it’s got some good restaurants nearby. In fact there’s even some hidden cool places too (report later). The hotel is quite an enjoyment in itself actually. It’s definitely very pretty to look at, comfy and the nice lobby lounge made you want to stay there all day.

The complimentary breakfast was really good too, it was served in their 2nd floor Italian restaurant Issimo. You got a lot of stuffs to choose from, basically you get fresh baked pastries (with homemade jams), fresh juices, fruits or salad, coffee/tea, main meal and dessert. The service was excellent, one of the best we had in Shanghai.

Their homemade croissant (not in pix) was really good. The juices were good and they change everyday, it’s carrot and pear in the picture. The fruit is Pitaya (or known as Dragon fruit) and pinapple.

For the main meal you get 6 choices, there’re standard western fare like egg benedict and 2 eggs + sausages type. Of course eating American breakfast was the last thing on my mind. I chose Chinese Porridge for the both days I stayed there since it’s light and comforting. It came with 6 toppings (dried meat, pickles, soy sauce, seasme oil, thousand year old egg and green onion).

Freda got the Soymilk with you-tiao and Shanghai wonton noodle for the 2nd day. They’re both surprisingly good.

IMG_6851The meal was finished with some homemade pastries. Overall everything taste good and fresh. There were simply way too much food for a morning though, but they did kept us energized till lunch. Afterall it is important to have lots of energy in Shanghai as it’s such an intense city.

Another thing I like a lot about JIA Shanghai is the lobby lounge. It has self-served snacks and beverages all day long, and wine after 5 pm (all complimentary for guests). The fridge is filled with water bottles and juices which came in handy for guests (we always grab a water bottle on our way out). The standard room was about $160 a night (rate might be different in other time) which I thought was quite reasonable. Also each room is equipped with a simple kitchen and dinnerware which was also useful. You can see more pictures of the room on my flickr .

Extraordinary Dessert (San Diego)

//// By in 18: Greater LA

Let me put up this almost forgotten entry before we left the country. The beautiful Extraordinary Dessert‘s floral decorated cakes and tea room are part of my San Diego experience every time I go there. When I went there few months ago, I found that they opened a restaurant version at downtown (Little Italy).

Upon entrance, the cake display is similar to the original cake shop.

Beyond the cakes is the spacious dining space.

Bruschetta ($3.5 each): Avocado with Artichoke Truffle Tapenade, and Cashel Blue with Pear and Fig Jam. Delicious and surprisingly filling.

IMG_6386
Mixed Green. The flower petals made a plain salad extraordinary.

Portobello & Brie Panini. A little light for my taste, but the bread is very fresh and good!
