Lark Silver Lake cake shop

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

Lark'sLark's
I always drove by Lark Silver lake cake shop and wonder about it as it seems like a cute place from the outside. I’m glad that the interior is not overly slick like several Abbot Kinney-like boutique places that are nearby.  I was a little disappointed at the lack of tables for customer to sit down and eat the cakes, I guess it’s more of a take out kind of place. Though they do have a sofa by the door.

Lark's

We were fulled from brunch so we just share a Red velvet cupcake – cream cheese icing and fondant petal. Very good! I love the cream cheese icing, it taste more like cheesecake than other ones I’ve tried (i.e. Sprinkle’s, Milk’s), it’s not too sweet and the cake was quiet moist. I like the size too, they’re smaller but not mini-size. Can’t wait to go back and try the other flavors, especially the “Ice box cupcake”.

Palate Food and Wine (Glendale)

//// By in 03: Eagle Rock

A new wine bar Palate was opened at the car dealership part of Glendale city. The wine selection is impressive, we tried a few glasses including two ‘biodynamic’ wine from France. The food menu is smaller but creative, it covers quite a range.

The neon pink lights, giant potted grapes and drapery reminds me of a technicolor greek mythology movie. We tried the Mason jars: potted duck rillettes. The preserved duck meat was very moist and smokey (especially good with wine). it’s our favorite of the night.

Persimmons, Speck, Wild Arugula Salad with Cider Vinaigrette: the persimmons was so sweet, while the arugula was too rough and bitter. The opposite flavors and texture was too jarring. Agnolotti: Sweet Potato, Ricotta, Brown Butter, Sage. Even though the pasta was cooked al dente, there wasn’t much of a texture to grasp on. The ingredients on paper sounded more interesting than the outcome. It is still a lovely dish to eat though.

The Crispy sweetbread with Melted leeks and Swiss chard did not have much flavors. Dessert: Lavender Creme Brulee, it was topped with too much whipped cream on top.

The creative menu sounded very promising but I didn’t find a MUST-GET dish this time. But I want to come back to try other dishes. Their menu was at least thoughtful and tried to please your palate, especially compare to many lazy chichi wine bars in Los Angeles that offered the likes of  ‘proscuitto wrapped date’ or ‘mac and cheese’.

Restaurant 2117 (Sawtelle)

//// By in 12: Sawtelle

For some reason, I rarely go to this Japanese French/Italian restaurant at on Sawtelle. The impression this time is quite different from my last visit years ago.

Two appertizers: Crispy Wonton Spicy Tuna Tartare. avocado, ginger chips (the ginger is a nice touch) and Japanese Hamachi Sashimi, Cilantro Sauce,  Crispy Yam, Sesame Oil Organic Tomori and Green Onion (multi-textural and flavors, very good!)

IMG_4529IMG_4530
Pan-Sautee Duck: tender, perfectly cooked and well seasoned, delicous. I got the Kobe Style Beef Meat Loaf. This is basically the luxury version of the common Japanese western food item ‘Hamburg Steak.’ The beef are incredibly flavorful, fluffy texture and moist…very good!

Mille Feuille. The pastry was a bit cold and stale, the cream taste a bit generic as well.

We enjoyed both our appetizers and entrees a lot, that’s why I scratched my head why I don’t come here more often. It’s also rather empty on a weekend night. Personally I think they suffered from a little bit of an identity crisis: the menu is a little bit of Californian/Fusion but it also some slightly upscale version of yoshoku (Japanese Western style food), while there’s also pricey French/Italian dishes. It’s located in the ‘Westside Little Tokyo’ where people (usually younger) came here for Japanese flair eatery.

Banana Leaf (Farmer’s Market)

//// By in 09: Weho

This Singaporean + Indonesian + Malaysian food stall at Farmer’s market is my favorite at Farmer’s Market. Yet this is the first time I actually took photos of the food (because I usually get take out).

Fish Curry, tasty and hot.
IMG_4536
Mee Goreng (Fried Noodle) set that include a fried egg and chicken skewers. It’s loaded with onions, chili, garlic with tomatoes and egg, very peppery and tasty. It left you with hot breath. Their fresh Limonade is a good remedy.

Compare to take out, seeing the food being served on a banana leaf somehow enhance the impression. 😉

La Brea Bakery (La Brea)

//// By in 09: Weho

IMG_4545
We’ve been working on the weekend a lot lately. To compensate getting up on a Sunday morning to work, we treated ourselves with baked goods from La Brea Bakery.  The Burrata Proscuitto Baguette Sandwich (plastic wrap at the back) is simple but delicious. The Pine Nut Cookie (not sure of its name) is my must-get. That chewy texture is so addictive!
