Uzbekistan (Sunset Blvd)

//// By in 08: Hollywood, Favorite Food Entries

Joan went to the restaurant Uzbekistan for breakfast earlier this month. This time we’re bringing a group of 7 to try more of their Eastern European food! We’ve witnessed an odd extreme difference between the insane amount you get from their $8 Lunch speical v.s. the rather pricey (but really good) entrees.

Since everything sound exotic so we tried a sampler plate Assorted Cold Appetizers $14 Taslikent, saute, cabbage salad, chicken roulette. Everything is very tasty, light yet flavorful. I especially like chicken roulette (the pate thing I assume). Even though 7 of us share this, we still had half a plate left to take home.

Two people at our table got their $7.95 Lunch specials. The nonstop and huge portion of ‘courses’ had everyone astounded. First it started with 1. Bread and Spread, then followed with:

2. Soup of the Day – Vegetable soup I notice they used a lot of dill for their flavors. 3. Salad Combo.
DSC04312.jpgDSC04321.jpg
4. Samsa with Potato and 5. Liver Kebob. Not in picture but it comes with 6. Vanilla ice-cream at the end too. All these for only $7.95~ Yes these are all for one person only

DSC04309.jpg
I got the same thing Joan got last time, it’s the cold appertizer Blini with Caviar and Cured Salmon $16 Too good, too good~~

The Entrees are definitely on the pricey side (almost all are over $20) but they all sound so delicious.

One person from our group got the Oxtail Stew $24. There’s a burner underneath to keep the stew cooking while served. It’s so tender and melty, absolutely delicious~

DSC04314.jpgDSC04322.jpg
Karsky Kabob $28 – lamb chops on a skewer is amazing. Beef Strogonoff $24 – slices of filet mignon and mushrooms over fries. Very creamy and rich. Everything is so good here.

One surprisingly note: the plate presentations of some of the entrees are surprisingly ‘highend’ looking. There’re still so many things on menu to try here.

Golden Deli (San Gabriel)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel, Favorite Food Entries

DSC04329.jpg
Spring roll, Sausage and Shrimp cake Bun $6 Big portion, incredibly delicious ingredients. I can never get enough of this.
DSC04326.jpgDSC04327.jpg
Ching Po Leung The drink is a traditional Chinese cooling tonic soup that taste like a dessert (see recipe). Yum! The Shrimp Crepe is alright.

DSC04325.jpgSo we went back to line up at Golden Deli, it was almost three when we got there and we still had to wait. The line never stopped even after we finished at nearly 4 o’ clock.

Bottle Rock (Culver City)

//// By in 13: Culver City

DSC04257.jpgDSC04263.jpg
Bottle Rock is a wine bar that’s setup like a fast food joint + groceries at Downtown Culver City. The vibe is very casual. The wine selection is impressive (dailly special selections are written on chalkboard).
DSC04258.jpgDSC04262.jpg
The Lamb Chop is not as seasoned as it appears. It’s still tender and not musky. The very flavorful Truffle Cheese Panini is fantastic, every bite is great joy.

Boss Sushi (Beverly Hills)

//// By in 10: Beverly Hills

There were endless Leo birthday celebration, here’s another one. This sushi restaurant at Beverly Hills seems like good for group party dinner with its colorful fusion rolls and slick presentation. Even the Japanese sushi chef got a head of bleach blonde hair. In order to feed the group, we ordered mostly sushi rolls (generous portions).

Sample of some of the sushi rolls, they all tend to taste the same because of the loaded sweet sauce.

Uni sashimi are served in a cup with bed of very vinegary rice underneath.

Pretty fresh fish and colorful presentation but the _insert name_ rolls will probably turn off sushi purests.

Porterhouse Bistro (Beverly Hills)

//// By in 10: Beverly Hills

We went to Porterhouse bistro to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday. I have not heard much about this steakhouse place before. Apparently they have a good $39.50 prix fixe menu, which all eleven of us ordered. It comes with 2 drinks (choice of cocktails, wine or beverages), 1st course (bread), 2nd course (7 choices of appetizer), 3rd course (8 choices of entree) and 4th course (7 choices of dessert).

DSC04271.jpgDSC04273.jpg
1st Course: Baguette serve with tapenade, butter, tomato bruschetta and a whole roasted garlic flower. 2nd course: smoked salmon Quesadilla’s(my choice).

DSC04275.jpgDSC04284.jpg
2nd course: Onion Soup. It’s pretty good. My vegetarian’s friend 3rd course: Vegetarian Plate of the day. Very very disappointing….this is really just a bunch of “sides” like potoato fries, mash potatos and creamed corn… I guess vegetarians don’t really have a choice at a steakhouse ^^;;

DSC04285.jpg
3rd course: 12 oz Rib Eye Steak. Big portion, done medium rare like I requested, pretty good meat. Satisfying!

DSC04290.jpgDSC04288.jpg
3rd course: Rack of Lamb. The meat is alright, not too tender. The sauce is light, but the flavor is rather bland. Not too memorable. Also the portion is quite small. The steak is a much better deal. Porterhouse fries, sides that came with the steak dishes.

DSC04297.jpgDSC04294.jpg
DSC04295.jpgDSC04298.jpg
DSC04301.jpgFourth course: strawberry mousse, Chocolate Tart, Crème Brulée, Crispy Apple Tart and Pecan Tart. Their desserts’ choices are rather safe and generic, but they’re all good, esp. the chocolate ones.

Overall the food is good but not amazing, though $40 for all these plus two drinks is a pretty good deal.
