All’ Angolo (Koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire, Favorite Food Entries

We’ve been blogging about food in LA for years and though we slowed down recently, there’s still endless eateries to discover in the vast landscape of Los Angeles. We found this small Italian joint in Koreatown by chance inside a mini mall. The menu is also simple and traditional, everything is made fresh.

All' Angolo

Instead of a typical mom and pop place you’d expect, the interior is actually modern, minimal and nicely design. The parking lot is very small so we always have to park at the dense with apartment area of K-town side streets, which is always challenge. There’re only 5 tables inside the small space, so you have to come early or just be lucky. They do take out as well.

All' Angolo

You can see your pizza made in front of you.

All'angolo

Marinara tomato, oregano, capers, anchovies. $8  Simple and very tasty. The Marinara sauce tastes on the healthier side (lighter) but it’s still flavorful. The crust is thin and soft (but not soggy), I like it.

All'angolo

Another basic: Spaghetti with Meatballs. Delicious! The spaghetti are handmade and the texture was great! The sauce, meatballs are all done perfectly, it’s the ultimate comfort food I’ll come back here for again and again.

All' Angolo

Insalata Delizia spinach salad, apples, red onion, gorgonzola cheese, lemon dressing.

All' Angolo

Siciliana: tomato, mozzarella, eggplant, sausage, bell pepper, spicy sauce.

All' Angolo

Lamb Ragu Pappardelle. A special du jour. The pasta are handmade again and it’s so fresh with great texture. The lamb Ragu is so rich and delicious What a pity that it’s not on their regular menu.

All' Angolo

Speck, Gorgonzola and Artichoke.

As you can see from the photo, we’ve came back a lot. The Pizza are about $10 each and Pasta at $8 (in LA!). The place reminds me of the small Italian casual joints up at SF and NYC, I’m glad I finally have a favorite go-to Italian place in LA .

The Hart and the Hunter (WeHo)

//// By in 09: Weho

Hart and the Hunter
I wanted to check out this place due to its cute website. Locates at the hip Pali Hotel at the Fairfax district, The Hart and the Hunter offers Southern meets Californian cuisine in a hip space that feels more like a coffee shop. I love the decor a lot.

Hart and the Hunter
Smoked Trout, boiled egg, Lettuce, Tomato, Avocado sandwich
The smoked trout was very good. They went well with the condiments. At first I was worried about the portion but turns out it’s pretty filling, though I wish they give you more bread.

Hart and the Hunter
Shrimp and grits, Bacon, Mushroom, Scallion
I’m not usually a grit fan but this is delicious! Umami tasting and not heavy. The scallions are a nice touch.

From a 2nd visit:
Hart and the hunter
Butter Biscuit with Pimento Cheese, Honey butter, Black berries
The butter Biscuit is their star must-get item. They’re fresh, buttery and didn’t feel heavy at all. Of the three toppings I like the honey butter the best.

Hart and the hunterHart and the hunter
The Pecan Praline Pancakes were fluffy and light. The crunchy pecans were very good. We also got the Mason (the one in mason jar) and Cortado coffee. Both are great~

Cute place good food, I’d love to go back to try their dinner menu. It’s also a bonus that it’s  walking distance to Cinefamily, i.e. one of my most favorite places in Los Angeles!

Maruhide Uni Club (Torrance)

//// By in 17: South Bay, Favorite Food Entries

Maruhide Uni Club As a big Uni fan I just found out about this restaurant in Torrance recently. Just as its name suggests, Maruhide Uni Club specialize in uni (Sea urchin) and every item on the menu features Uni one way or another. According to their menu, their fresh uni is from Santa Barbara.

Technically I’m not suppose to eat raw fish and shellfish due to my current condition. But who can resist right? Good thing they have cook Uni dishes on the menu too.

Maruhide Uni Club
Rice bowl with Uni, scallop and Ikura
Half of the menu is rice bowls with different toppings in additional to uni. My sister chose the one with scallop and ikura. When the dish arrived, we’re all pleasantly surprise at how generous the portion of the uni is. The uni was fresh and delicious. The omelette has uni in it, as well as the soup that came with the rice bowl.

Uni Cream sauce Pasta
Again, we were blown away by the portion of Uni display here! I’ve always love uni pasta but it’s hard to find here in LA. This one is probably the best I’ve had so far!

Overall a very very satisfying meal. I’m so happy this place exists!

Guisados (Echo Park)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park, Favorite Food Entries

IMG_3093GuisadosGuisados is hands down my favorite “new” restaurant in Los Angeles. This famous taquería originated in Boyle Height, and has since expanded to Echo Park. Watch for another outpost in Downtown LA soon. Guisados serves truly authentic tacos (not Tex-mex, not Cali-mex, it’s authentic flavors you would find in Mexico City) with fresh homemade tortilla.

Their Horchata is fresh and tasty!

Guisados
If you’re not sure what to get, especially since the menu is in Spanish, then you can’t go wrong with the Six Mini Tacos Sampler. You get two beef: Steak Picado, Salsa Roja (steak with Red sauce), 2 chicken: Tinga, Mole Poblano and 2 pork: Chicharrón (friend pig skin). Cochinita Pibil (slow-roasted pork). All of them are excellent! All the meat are perfectly braised with so much flavors.  If I have to pick top 2, they would be Salsa Roja and Chicharon.

The handmade corn tortilla are so fresh tasting and fluffy. I never knew what a big difference good tortilla makes.

GuisadosHere’re the regular size tacos. Three are plenty enough, and so are the six mini sampler plate.

After you’ve been there once, you’ll feel like you want to go back again and again. The tacos are truly addictive and delicious. I’m hooked.

Cooks County (Miracle Mile)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

Cooks County is a cute neighborhood farm-to-table restaurant in the Miracle Mile area. Their menu is seasonal and changes all the time. We walked in for brunch without a reservation and was soon seated. The tables were a little too close to each other as they pack in a lot into a tight space.

It’s nice to see interesting brunch dishes on the menu and not just the usual 2 eggs with bacon (of course nothing wrong with that either~).

Donuts: fluffy and fresh!

Poached eggs with flageolet beans, braised greens, roasted tomato and bacon.
A very hearty meal.

Fried eggs with chick peas, yogurt, harissa and grilled olive bread
A simple egg dish with Morocaan flavors. I enjoy the fried chick peas and harissa a lot.

Overall, we weren’t blown away by the place but we enjoyed the dishes nevertheless. Though this place is probably a bit too pricey to be our regular neighborhood brunch joint, I appreciated their interesting and evolving brunch menu.
