Hummus Place (NYC: East Village)

//// By in 03: NYC

Another sample from the East side, Hummus Place, a tiny place that eats only…hummus (middle eastern spread).

Shakshuka, a mediterranean tomato and vegetable stew with 2 eggs. Very tasty~ *O* and totally warms you up.

The pita bread are incredibly puffy and amazing. This hummus has beans stew, tahini, egg and spices.
DSC08423.jpgThe hummus + soup + tea set or Shakshuka + hummus + tea set are $8.95 each…so fair, so warm, so good~ There are so many interesting little places like this all over East side, I can’t wait to try them all. Too bad Joan went back to LA yesterday.

Flor’s Kitchen (NYC: East Village)

//// By in 03: NYC

We finally explored the East side and LOVE it! The indie and cheap-eat vibe is incredible. There’re so many creative or authentic multi-ethnic little restaurants. We went into this tiny Venezuelan restaurant Flor’s Kitchen.

Asado Negro: slow cooked beef in a sweet sauce, very tender and tasty! Tuna Ceviche: ahi-tuna with red onions, mango & avocado in lime and chipotle broth. So good! Ceviche is sort of like a seafood salad dish.

Malta drink and dessert Bienmesaba, which is like a non-mocha coconut flavored brandy-soaked sickly sweet Tiramisu~ ^^;; One aspect I love New York most is that it is so ethnically diverse where everywhere you hear conversations in ten different languages. People also loves to ask you where you’re from (esp. if you obviously don’t look like a New Yorker). And I have urges to say I’m from HK rather than LA. Needless to say, East Village (and Lower East side) is now my favorite area in Manhattan~ It is hip but unpretentious and very cultural.

The Kitchen Club (NYC: Nolita)

//// By in 03: NYC, Favorite Food Entries

New Year’s eve at Manhattan…there’s the Time Square craziness that we avoided like plague, and most restaurants had a prix-fixe menu. While walking in Nolita earlier in the day, we saw this lovely and intimate French restaurant (with Asian flair) and liked the $85 3 course menu very much. We walked in while they were in preparation and asked for reservation. Turns out there is one open table left at the night. Lucky!

The owner’s cute little French bulldog, I found out later that he’s the mascot for the restaurant~ 😀 Noted the pears on every table, it’d the key ingredient for the entire course.
DSC08359.jpgDSC08365.jpg
Appertizers: Watercress Pear G Gorgonzola Salad and choice of Kumamoto Oysters or…
DSC08362.jpgDSC08353.jpg
Chanterelles Mushroom in Reduced Creme Sauce. The seseme bread taste like Chinese steamed-wheat bread, even the serving plate is those blue frame China. Very good.

DSC08367.jpgDSC08381.jpg
Main Course: Deer with hukleberry preserves. So good~ The sides are amazing too, esp. the sweet potato gratin with black truffle!

DSC08374.jpgDSC08386.jpg
Quail with Foie Gras, there’re pears underneath the quail. Very good! The dessert is Poached Pear in Red Wine with Chocolate Mousse, so heavenly!

It has a sake bar called Chibi’s Bar right next door, with the little bulldog as logo. The owner came by and chat with us. She told us the night was also her lovely restaurant’s 15th Anniversary! Double celebration~

Rice to Riches (NYC: Nolita)

//// By in 03: NYC

DSC08343.jpgDSC08345.jpg
DSC08342.jpgFound this amazing designy place that sells only rice pudding: Rice to Riches. There’re many flavors, we had the Endangered Maple with Sun Dried Blueberries and Man-Made Mascarpone with Cherries, very yummy! You can taste a little sample before making decision. There’re LDC wall screens with motion graphics, and the plastic bowl with covers (in case you can’t finish it)…so elaborate. Though most of the stool tables don’t have stools, a very pity minus for our tortured legs. I love this area Nolita (= North of Little Italy), it’s full of cozy little cafe and bistro and boutique of up-and-coming designers.

Happy New Year!

//// By in Travel

DSC08337.jpgIt’s SNOWING! 😀 The snowflake were huge and it was snowing for couple hours. Good thing we were prepared. Though it made walking around SoHo quite troublesome…but fun!
