Ricochet (Joshua Tree)

//// By in 05: US Other

The town right outside of the national park is small and low-key, but it’s surprisingly filled with interesting shops, galleries and eateries which wouldn’t look out of place in Silver lake or Venice. There’s a very cute bakery called Teacake Bakery, a hip “etsy-ish” art and craft store called Mt. Fuji General Store, and lots of vintage clothes store. We ate pretty well during our stay there. One of the places we like a lot was Ricochet.

Ricohet is a small quirky eatery that also sell gourmet food, wine and beer and vintage clothing. We felt like stepping into someone’s home. All the mismatch vintage furnitures, plates and decor gave a homey vibe to the place. There are only 3 small tables and the cook was also the server. For a small shop this place packed in lots of gourmet goodies, even different types of gluten free-crackers.

Local brew Kombuchadate shake

It seems like the entire town sell this local brew Kombucha. It tastes better than the mainstream one that’s sold in Whole food. And of course you can’t not go to the Southern California desert without trying the date milk shake.

Since we had a very satisfying breakfast at Sacred Sand so we didn’t need a full lunch. All the food tasted  very home cooking, especially when the cook just bring out the food from the kitchen and serve them on all these mismatch plates. The soup, tamale and the taco all are fresh and tasty. I love the cute heart shape plate a lot!

They have lots of vegetarian and vegan items on the menu too, and it seems like their menu change constantly. Fresh ingredients, home cooking, great homey and quirky vibe, Ricochet is great place to grab a bite before or after visiting the national park.

Sacred Sand Bed and Breakfast (Joshua Tree)

Sacred Sand B&B
Sacred Sand B&BSacred Sand B&B

Soon after the wedding, my husband and I had a pre-honeymoon getaway to Joshua Tree National Park to recharge and rejuvenate. We stayed at the Sacred Sand Bed and Breakfast for 2 nights and we had an amazing time. The room was wonderful and the best part is the nice patio with hot tub and outdoor bed. It was extremely quiet there, especially at night, which is exactly we needed. And I’ve never seen so many stars on the nightsky before!

Breakfast is include in the room rate and it was served at the main house’s dining room. Owners Steven and Scott live in the main house and they would prepare breakfast for the guests at their nice open kitchen. They’re really sweet and are great cooks!

1st day breakfast. The cardamon on the fruit salad was a nice touch. The Chilaquiles with mole was delicious, the mole sauce tasted pretty authentic.

2nd day breakfast was even better! They made the fig and rum jam and it’s very good. It’s hard to go wrong with baked egg and I love the tomato + scallions + shallot garnish on the potatos.

You can have as much coffee, fresh squeeze orange juice, tea or whatever you like as you want. Everything tasted fresh and homemade.

As for the Joshua Tree national park, I absolutely love it! The landscapes are so strange and out of this world that I felt like I was in either a pre-historic land or an alien planet. It’s a great weekend getaway from LA. Apparently it’s really beautiful in Spring with flowers blossoming. It’ll be nice to go back and stay at Sacred Sand again!

Heirloom LA + wedding at Marvimon

//// By in Favorite Food Entries, Food: Los Angeles

Back from haitus! Sorry I haven’t been active on potatomato for the past few months due to my wedding. I’m glad that it’s over now and I don’t have to think about it anymore. I planned the wedding myself to keep the cost down so it was a lot of effort and time spent in researching and calling/emailing around. It was fun at first and then it just became tedious. Thankfully I got lots of help from my friends and family so the event went smoothly!

MarvimonIMG_0747
IMG_1359IMG_1333

Pretty early on I’ve decided to have my ceremony and reception at Marvimon. It’s located near Chinatown and was originally built in 1924 as one of LA’s first automobile showrooms. It was converted to a house in recent years and became an event space soon after. I like the space because it looks like somebody’s cool home. It fits with how I want my wedding to be: intimate, casual and fun. Another plus side of Marvimon is that you can choose your own caterer.

Now onto the food! Being a food blogger I have certain pressure from my friends to have somewhat decent food at the wedding ^^;; I find the typical wedding food (standard chicken/fish/beef entree) too generic and uninspiring. I’m sure we’ve all been to wedding where the food was average and boring and then you’re shocked to learn how much they cost. Since I’m on a very tight budget so I don’t have a lot of options. I called around and most are out of my price range. In fact a certain place (which I shall not name) actually got pissy at me on the phone for daring to ask them if they could do it in my budget. As I was giving up hope and start questioning if good, affordable and interesting caterer exists, I found Heirloom LA!

From day one, Heirloom LA was wonderful to work with! They’re very responsive and straightforward. I told them my price range and they managed to come up with an interesting menu that works within the budget. I didn’t need anything fancy or expensive, just fresh, seasonal ingredients with creativity. And that’s exactly what Heirloom LA is all about.  After one happy tasting (with lots of food to take home to) we’re on board!

One thing I absolutely love at Marvimon: a nice open kitchen. It’s nice to see Heirloom LA prepared and cooked for the night.

For the cocktail hour, we have two tray Passed Appetizers and an appetizer bar. Once again, these beautiful pictures are taken by Floataway studio.

Tray Passed Appetizer #2 :
Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho Shot with Charred Burrata and Basil and Black Olive

Both are excellent! I especially loved the Gazpacho shot. Good thing I tasted these during the tasting because I completely missed them on the day as I was too busy taking wedding portrait outside!

And then we have The Crostini bar . It’s beautifully placed on a set of vintage drawers (you can see it better here). The station contains Artesian Cured Meats and Cheeses and House Pickled Vegetables. Yes Heirloom LA make their own cheese and cured their own meat and sausages, aren’t they awesome? Everything was tasty and fresh. I especially love the burrata cheese. Missing in these pictures are these excellent pizza everyone raved about. Besides the crostini, the chef also made rice crackers for a guest who’s allergic to gluten.

Now onto dinner. I love this chalkboard dinner menu from Heirloom LA. To keep the cost down we did it buffet style, and the food make sense to served in buffet too.

Lasagna cupcake – Heirloom LA signature individual “Perfect-Size” lasagna made from Parmesean Reggiano and Fresh Hand Pulled Mozzarella.
What an excellent idea! I absolutely love these cupcake size and shaped Lasagna. There are three different flavors to chooose from: Wild Boar Bolognese, Artichoke, Sweet Corn & Mascarpone. My favorite is the bolognese. They’re full of flavors and fresh tasting. The guests keep going back to get more and more!

Lettuce Wrap Buffet:
Prime cap steak with onion sprouts and Lemon Vinaigrette and Parmesean (left pix)
Marinated Sweet and Sour Jidoori Chicken
balsamic beets and red spinach,

Confit halibut with pickled pepper

Basically you have these lettuce cups to warp the above “toppings” and eat them like a taco or wrap. I like the idea because the lettuce gives balance with the richness of the meat. My favorite of the four “toppings” is the steak, it was so delicious and flavorful. The others are excellent as well. Top picture is by Floataway studio.

Beautiful Fruit Platter. The grapes were so sweet!

A lot of the guests raved about the food throughout the night so the food was definitely a hit! The service was excellent too. For instance, we forgot to bring a wedding cake knife (completely blank out on that) for the cake cutting and they’re happy lent us their knife. I also love their presentation very much:  chalkboard, rustic wood platters, brown butcher paper and palm leaf plates, which all went really well with the space and the “intimate house party” feel of the wedding. Tal, the general manager, was super helpful in doing the rentals for us too.

I highly recommend Heirloom LA for their delicious, fresh and interesting food. They’re reasonably priced (if you have more budget than us, there’s an option of a whole roasted suckling pig!) and provide excellent service. You can taste their food at various location in LA: Intelligentsia Pasadena, Paper or Plastik cafe and Silver Lake wine.

Earl’s Gourmet Grub (Mar Vista)

//// By in 13: Culver City

A new gourmet sandwich joint has opened up on the already neighborhood gems-filled block Venice Blvd. Earl’s Gourmet Grub used to be a staple at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market, they finally setup their own shop nearby. Their sandwich menu all sounded very ‘gourmet’ – with interesting ingredients and combinations.

Earl Gourmet Grub

The interior has a lot of interesting customized wood work. The non cookie cutter decor instantly won me over (their sandwiches ought to be special!) The retail walls are stocked with chips that I’ve never heard of. They also served a lot of pastries, drinks and baked goods.

Earl Gourmet Grub

They have a shared back patio seatings with the coffee shop next door.

Earl Gourmet Grub

From their breakfast menu: POPEYE: Fried Egg, Spinach, Pepper Jack, Cajun Aioli on Brioche Roll $5.75  Very yummy! The fried egg is what does it for me. The brioche is fresh and fluffy, and the flavor is just right and not too overwhelming.

Earl Gourmet Grub

SUGAR BUSH: Canadian Ham, Gruyere de Comte, Maple Syrup Butter on Brioche French Toast $6.75. It’s two french toast with ham, cheese and maple syrup inside! It can get a bit sweet though.

Too bad this place only opened till mid-day. I’d love to come back to try their other sandwiches and soups. They also have seasonal salads.

Paper or Plastik Cafe (Vista Heights)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

We’ve been on hiatus because of Joan’s big W-day and now that’s finally over, I can update with lots of new posts (ah I missed blogging).

A new coffee shop has opened at the Mid-Wilshire Vista Heights neighborhood called Paper or Plastik Cafe. It’s a delight to know that this stretch of Pico got another neighborhood gem! This coffee shop is also a front for a ballet studio and an upstair boutique.

Paper or Plastik

The warehouse interior does make the place feel a bit cold (didn’t feel like LA for some reason). There’s a florist shop upstairs at the loft, i wish there were more green downstairs as well.

Paper or PlastikPaper or Plastik

They served baked goods from Cake Monkey and Sweets for the Soul and sandwiches from Heirloom LA (whom we will blog about soon, Joan used them for her wedding).

Paper or Plastik
They also served coffee from Intelligensia. Lovely latte painting~

Paper or PlastikPaper or Plastik

I can see this coffee shop being the new community coffee shop, as it has a nice mixed crowd (students, families, young/old couple, etc.). I hanged out here for a few times already, I love the  hint of ballet music from the other side of the wall, and the little glimpse of the dancers whenever the door is open. It’s a chill space to hang out, though i wished there’re more touch of warmth and quirks to soften the industrial feeling.
