Alpine Villege (Torrance)

//// By in 17: South Bay, Shopping

DSC00747.jpg German mugs! Went to Alpine Villege today, a little-German+Swiss+Austria area with market, shops, restaurant and cultural events at Torrance. Turns out it’s Oktoberfest right now! The waitress in the restaurant gave us a pack of coupons for 50% discount but as we don’t care for beer so we didn’t go/nor plan to. So why the sudden urge to go there? Because we’ve been cursed by German sauage recently (we’d explain that later ^^;;)…

DSC00751.jpgDSC00752.JPG

The Beethoven head statue is quite absurdly stick out there. One of the restaurants is inside the inn, where there’s dance hall and bar. As seen from the photos, the visitors are majority old people.

DSC00738.jpgThe pate (can’t tell what it’s made of) is so good that we ended up eating too much bread. Though it looks like a scope of icecream…

DSC00743.jpg

Polish Sausage with Potato Salad and Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage that taste sour) $7.95
Very fat and juicy and quite good

DSC00746.jpg

Knackwurst with mashed Potatoes and Sauerkraut $7.95
Taste rather normal…

DSC00763.jpgDSC00764.jpgDSC00758.jpgDSC00759.jpgDSC00760s.jpg The village has a wedding chapel and tons of shops of antiques, glass and porcelain, European traditional toys.

DSC00766.jpgDSC00770.jpgDSC00769.jpg
Alas, the market! Pates, European chocolates~

DSC00774.jpgDSC00775.jpgDSC00776.jpg
Giant tin barrels of beer…

DSC00779.jpgDSC00783.jpg

More big fat sausages and mustard. What we bought at the market. Haven’t tried yet. ^w^

Daikokuya (Little Tokyo)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA, Favorite Food Entries

DSC00690.jpgDSC00691.jpg

Daikokuya is a ramen place at Little Tokyo. It is nostalgia-Japan inside, full of collections of vintage signs, posters and billboards.

DSC00704.jpg
Daikokukya Ramen $7.50.
DSC00705.jpg I like the soy sauce marinated egg (? not sure how to called them ^^;;), I like how the york is not fully cooked! The soup is supposedly special pork bone soup, and that’s the only kind they have there. I never liked ramen much, but I have to admit this is quite yummy! (but then I never tried those long queue line ones in Japan so I wouldn’t know how good ramen suppose to taste like)

DSC00700.jpg
Yakisoba $6.50. Like it!

DSC00693.jpgDSC00707.jpgDSC00696.jpg
Some of the nostalgic collections, Kewpies everywhere! ^w^

The last one is a vintage Chinese poster~

Cheebo (Sunset)

//// By in 08: Hollywood

DSC00658.jpgCheebo on Sunset is one of the regular places we go during work. It’s casual Italian cooking (pizza, sandwich, salad) with organic ingredients. They said their animal are hormone-free and free-range and the vegetables are certified organic. Many items on menu are cater for vegans and vegetarians. So naturally(?) it attracts hipsters people. We don’t care much though, because the main attractions of this place are 1) very unique tasting and fair priced 2) it’s located right across the comic store Meltdown which we like to go for a “break” ;D

DSC00650.jpgDSC00647.jpgDSC00649.jpg
Very orangy inside. The stain glasses are very pretty but doesn’t show well on photo. Lots of paintings on the wall~ Each tables are covered with paper and comes with crayon pencils. One time Bill drew some graffiti art on it, the waiter like it so much that he tore it and pin it at their bulletin board. 😀

Dunno why I feel organic/health concern everytime I stepped in so I’d always get salad religiously (their Pizza and sandwich are very good too). These two salad we got looked so similar o_0 but they taste different. They’re both very good. I like how the veggie are chopped into small pieces and there are so many different tasting stuffs in there, so you get a variety of tastes each bite:

DSC00653.jpg
Mesquite Grilled Vegorama Chop: mixed greens, zucchini, squash, mushroom, carrot, leek, asparagus, fennel and garbanzo bean in a red wine vinaigrette (half $7.75).

DSC00652.jpg
Cheebo Chop: baby greens, sopressata, roast chicken, salami, mozz, provolone, garbanzo beans, tomatoes, kalamata olives and fresh herbs in a red wine vinaigrette (half $7.75)

DSC00655.jpg
Tiramisu: so jumbo huge that it filled up our stomach way more than the salad. Very good though!

Maison Akira (Pasadena)

//// By in 02: Pasadena, Favorite Food Entries

DSC00660.jpgDSC00668.jpg
Finally tried this French + Japanese fusion restaurant Maison Akira on Green St. in Pasadena! We passed by it almost daily for 4 years while we attended ArtCenter, but for some reason we never step in there once. Why? I don’t know ^^;;; (perhaps intimidation + bad timing + inconvinience + laziness?!?!) Once we almost went there for dinner but by the time we reach there they’re closing. 🙁

The interior is alright, seems like someone tried to DIY instead of getting real interior design people to do the job. But the wallpaper match my outfit 😛 The bread is pretty good.

DSC00663.jpgDSC00669.jpg
Cobb Salad with Marinated Diced Tuna Sashimi, Shitake Mushrooms, Iceberg Lettuce, Egg, Bacon, Apple and Tomatoes. It comes with a cream corn soup (very sweet).

DSC00666.jpgDSC00664.jpg

DSC00670.jpg
The Special Bento Box set was very very yummy and quite value since it comes with so many stuffs! Beside the box itself, it also comes with the Lobster Bisque which taste very yummy (it has 2 pieces of Lobster) and chawanmushi (also very good). Everything in the bento box taste excellent, starting clockwise with the Soba…

DSC00673.jpgDSC00674.jpgDSC00672.jpg

Close up of the Special Bento Box.
Left: Miso marinated Sea Bass + Crab Croquette
Middle: Sauteed Scallop with Wasabi Potato Mouseeline (yummy!)
Right: Duck Pate + Tuna Tartare + Salad.

It also comes with a bowl of rice which I didn’t have stomach to eat at all. We got too full by the food that we didn’t have stomach room for dessert. And their dessert seems good too! >0< May be next time…
