O Banh Mi (Silverlake)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park, Favorite Food Entries

A hard to spot Vietnamese Sandwich shop is tucked behind trees on the hilly Hyperion with no visible sign. They open at Noon – 3pm everyday.

The Deli (Cold Cut) Sandwich is unconventional: instead of the usual pickled carrot and daikon radish garnishes, it’s pan fried dried orange daylily and carrot in a limey fish sauce. It’s so heavenly aromatic and made the cold cut extra umami, amazing! However the next time I went, the garnish is changed to the usual pickled carrot/daikon combo. The baguette is a little too hard though.

On Friday only, they would roast a pig! Unfortunately I’ve never had a Friday off to try it yet.

C+M (Miracle Mile)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

A new coffee shop has opened inside the LA Country Museum called C+M (Coffee + Milk). Since I work nearby there these days, I’ve been coming here for lunch a lot after their debut. They baked their pastry every morning, and the menu changes daily.

C+M
The interior is brightly lit as it’s walled by floor to ceiling glass.

C+M
Love the modern, minimal space that’s brightened up by wood.

Sycamore Kitchen
They use the Intelligentsia roast and it brewed in the La Marzocco Strada machine.

C+M
My favorite pastry: Gruyere Popover, fluffy and flakey, very good.
Also not in pictures is the Bacon Pop Tart! It’s delicious!

C+M
Pear and Brie Sandwich in a round bun $7: the bun is so fluffy and fresh, love it!

Duck Prosciutto with Kim Chee Sandwich $7  They over drenched the sauce occasionally.

Awesomized
Black Velvet Cake, a bit too sweet for my taste.

Sadly this place is suffered from uneven services. Most staffs are friendly but they often forgot or mix up the orders. One time I was treated rudely (when I gave him change, a staff rolled his eyes as if he refuse to do such ‘complicated’ math and let another staff attended to me), since then I’ve stopped coming here. What a pity as I like the space, food and drinks.

Handsome Coffee Roasters (Downtown LA)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA, Favorite Food Entries

IMG_0828IMG_0826 Speaking of good coffee shop in Los Angeles, one of my favorites is Handsome Coffee Roasters. Locates in the midst of warehouses at downtown LA, Handsome coffee is started by three guys who branched out from Intelligensia Coffee. I like how simple their menu is, just few items of simple coffee that’re from well roasted single origin beans. The interior consists of mostly high table for drinkers who go there mainly for the caffeinated beverages, and not to hang out whole day with your homework or screenplay writing.

Here’s a good cup of Espresso with Milk. No sugar needed (and you won’t find them).

Some people probably would find this place pretentious and snobbish. I personally just appreciate that such a simple “purist”  place exists.

Graffiti Sublime Cafe (Mid-City)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

I’m not sure what I think of Graffiti Cafe, it doesn’t feel like a  cafe to me, it’s more like a lounge or club from the 80s Los Angeles, or a dated “trendy” place you would find in parts of Europe or Asia. It’s also overly spacious, especially for the amount of people there, the all white palette made it feel more empty. Lots of haters for this place on Yelp mainly because of its cash only policy.

Here I’ll let the pictures speak for itself:

They do have an ATM machine and it was kind of an eye sore. The interior reminds me of a design studio, in fact it would be great if my design company could move in here.

The coffee was pretty good. However, with so many great new and old coffee shops now in Los Angeles, I’m not sure I like the vibe of this place enough to return. Though I could see it being a place for a big group of friends hanging out for coffee post-dinner.

Salt’s Cure (West Hollywood)

Here’s how to treat your out-of-town-guest for a very Los Angeles morning: hike at Runyon Canyon and then top it off with a brunch at Salt’s Cure.

Salt’s Cure is a small eatery that uses local ingredients and have most of their items prepared in houses: pickles, jams, bread, scones…etc. Their meat, sausages and bacon are butchered and smoked in house too. Freda tried their hamburger before and loved it. Jon and I tried their brunch instead after hiking.

The all star breakfast is amazing! Two eggs, scone with homemade jam, two bacons, two sausages and pancakes. The scones and the pancakes were the best. The scone was fresh and buttery while the pancakes were thin and fluffy. It’s an ideal breakfast plate that has everything I like.

Their menu changes regularly, here’s a special of the day: Shredded pork, tortilla and eggs. Hearty and quite spicy.

Salt’s Cure Burger. A simple, classic burger with a moist, well seasoned patty and addition of crispy bacon. The bun is very good too.

The food is great and the prepared-in-house ingredients are special so the price is not too affordable. It’s small place and it’s really popular so the wait could be long. Come early or make your reservation!
