Soban (koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

Since there’s no English signage out front, it’s easy to drive pass Soban, a great little joint in Koreatown features Korean home cooking dishes. When we arrived according to the address, we weren’t sure if it’s the right place until we stepped in. The interior is small, bright and modern.

IMG_1598
Soban is known for serving a large amount of banchan (side dishes). Knowing that beforehand, we were careful to only order one dish to share for the two of us.

IMG_1597
We order the Galbi Jjim – braised Beef short rib, along with rice. It was quite large and the two of us couldn’t finish it. The short ribs were really tender and flavorful. The broth is soy sauce based with a lot of garlic, ginger and chilies. There are also plenty red dates which gave sweetness to the broth.

As much as I enjoy the Galbi Jjim, I wish we could have order another dish as it got a bit one note. It’s probably better to have more than 2 people to share more dishes.

The Sycamore Kitchen (La Brea)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

A new American bakery + brunch place called Sycamore Kitchen was opened at District La Brea from the folks at Hatfield’s. It’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood and they serve Stumptown Coffee.

Apple Galette. Flaky, crispy but not greasy, very good!

Everything is tasty and clean tasting. I can’t wait to come back to try the Salted Caramel Pecan Bobka Roll  and other baked goods. It’s a very good place for a lazy Sunday morning except that it’s pretty crowded.

Palsaik Samgyupsal Korean BBQ (koreatown)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire, Favorite Food Entries

In a town that has no shortage of Korean BBQ restaurants, Palsaik Samgyupsal is the “IT” spot in Koreatown now. Palsaik means 8 colors and Samgyupsal means bacon. The interior is slick and modern with big screen TVs playing Kpop music video. In fact the last time (2 months ago) I went they kept looping PSY’s Gangnam Style on the TV. The vibe is youthful and friendly (aka it’s ok you don’t speak Korean).

IMG_1566
Palsaik is known for their special marinated Pork Belly. They offer a 8 flavors pork belly set for $49.99 which is enough food for 4 people as it came with soup and fried rice. The 8 flavors are: Wine, Original, Ginseng, Garlic, Herb, Curry, Miso and Red Pepper paste.

They have a special grill that’s tilted so the fat from the pork belly would dribble down in to a hole. Our server cooked and cut the pork into pieces for us too.

I enjoy the different flavors and like some better than others. I liked Garlic, herb, miso and original. You get little dishes of thin slices of pickled radish, pepper salt in oil and red pepper sauce on the side to go with the meat. Each table also has a big bowl of salad on the side too.

The pork belly set came with this seafood soup as well as kimchi fried rice at the end. So like I said, there’re plenty food for a group of people. I was so full by the meat that I only had a bit of the soup and rice.

Great place overall, good meat and flavors, it’s a great addition to the hopping Korea town.  A good alternative from my other favorite Korean BBQ place like Honey Pig and Park’s BBQ.

Copenhagen Pastry (Culver city)

So great to find a good, authentic European bakeries in LA. Locates on Washington Blvd in Culver City, Copenhagen Pastry is a small bakery that makes fresh Danish bake goods everyday.  There are rye bread, Marzipan and all kinds of sweet pastries on the display cases for you to choose. My friend and I picked up a bunch of pastries and tried almost all of them. They’re all so fresh, lightly crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy inside. I like the Kringle and the custard ones a lot. They would make a wonderful daily morning treats.

Ink (West Hollywood)

//// By in 09: Weho, Favorite Food Entries

We’ve been feeling fatigue toward “small plates” restaurants because there are so many of them in LA now. I used to be excited about the concept of small plates because it’s a great way to taste interesting dishes and share them with a group, like dim sum, tapas and Izakaya. Now it seems like all the new “it” spot opened in the past 2 years are small plates restaurant. Plus paying $9-$20 for a small dish became not so appealing unless it’s truly fantastic.

IMG_1537
Top chef’s winner Michael Voltaggio‘s Ink was one of these “it” joints and it was really hard to get a table as soon as it opened. I’ve heard great things about it though my waning interest in small plate joints kept me from making effort to score a table. When the unfortunate Foie gras ban took place few months ago, it finally motivated us to give it a try! Their menu is seasonal and changes constantly. I was delighted to see how interesting all the dishes sound on the menu.

Cuttlefishgreen papaya, peanut coconut cream, black lime

IMG_1540
Hamachidashi sponge, soy yuzu, radish, rice cracker
One of our favorites of the night.

IMG_1544
Foie gras – waffle, smoked maple, hot sauce
Here’s the dish we came here for. The foie gras was so silky and buttery, in fact it feels a bit like you’re eating a bar of butter. With the waffle and smoked maple this almost feels like a dessert. Anyways, farewell to foie gras for now…until when I travel outside of California.

IMG_1542
Burrata – trout roe, apricot, persian saffron
Sugar Snap peas – a mojo of itself, coffee, cardamom, coconut (no pix)
Another favorites of the night among the group.

IMG_1545
octopus, ink shells, young fennel, pimenton

IMG_1547
Pork Belly, charcoal oil, bbq flavor, corn

IMG_1551
Chocolate ice cream, spiced tofu, nutella sponge, powdered ganache

Every single dish was really good! I haven’t been to place where I truly enjoy every dish from start to finish for awhile. I was amazed at the creativity and originality in the combination of flavors. There were a lots of surprises in the pairing of ingredients and how they make these pairings worked. The plating was also artful and you feel like there’re a lot of heart put into each dish. Two big thumbs up for Ink!

Now with creative dishes like these, I wouldn’t mind paying $9-20 for them. And my excitement for small plates have restored…a bit. 🙂
