Le Bar a Soupes (Paris: Bastille)

//// By in 01: Paris

After rich French food every night (in addition Freda got fever and threw up), we got pretty exhausted. We can’t possibly go eat light gourmet deli food everyday. While strolling in Bastille (my favorite neighborhood in Paris) we saw Le Bar A Soupes.

A set of Bread (plain, sesame or poppyseed) + Soup + Dessert or Cheese + Coffee or Wine for 9 euro~ Everyday they have 6 different soups to choose from.

DSC05073.jpgDSC05070.jpg
I was told it’s Mixed-Vegetable Soup, deliciously healthy tasting. I don’t know what my dessert is, taste like Fig Pudding

DSC05071.jpgDSC05074.jpg
Joan had the Bloody Mary Tomato Soup (a bit vodka-y, flavorful and not too sour) and the dessert is Carrot Puree (healthy tasting).

DSC05076.jpgCafe. I heard that they have outlets at New York and Toronto too? It’s a very much needed break from the heavy French food we’ve been consuming. I wish we have this near where we work…it’d make an awesome everyday lunch!

Le Pre-Verre (Paris: Latin Quarter)

//// By in 01: Paris

DSC05061.jpgFrench cuisine is not known for fusing with other culture’s flavors and ingredients. When I read about Le Pre-Verre on Pudlo Paris, it said that the chef is known for incorporating Asian’s spices and herb with French cuisine, we got interested. Besides it’s the most promising walking distance place from where we stayed at (which has too many tourist traps). The restaurant was packed and we didn’t have reservation, but they managed to seat us at an outdoor table. Like many restaurants in Paris, they offer a set menu. 26.50 euro for 3 courses, very affordable!

DSC05045.jpgDSC05050.jpg
1st course, Freda’s choice: Chestnut Soup with anise Star. I haven’t seen non-Chinese/Indian/Vietnamese cuisine using anise star before so we thought that was interesting. And it tasted really good. Other than the wonderful sweet chestnut flavor, there’s a subtle spice-flavor in the soup that could only contribute to anise star. My choice: Oyster with Ginger. Very fresh raw oyster. The dice ginger is a nice touch, very Chinese.

DSC05054.jpg
Freda’s main course: Suckling Pig poched in Spicy Sauce with Cabbages. Incredibly good, the meat melt in your mouth, very tender. The sauce is not spicy despite it said so, there’s subtle cumin flavor in it which compliment the meat well.

DSC05056.jpg
My meat course: Mallard roasted with corn and cocoa. Mallard is wild duck. Very nice interesting dish, the sauce was almost mole-like (cocoa) but it’s not Mexican tasting at all. Duck with cocoa sauce is an interesting combine, I love it.

DSC05058.jpgDessert: Roasted Bananas and Mango Mousse with Red Wine. I was too fulled from the main course so we shared one dessert. The mango mousee was a little sour (not mango season?) but I’m glad for the sourness for aftermeal. The roasted bananas are basically plantains.

Berthillon (Paris: Île Saint-Louis)

//// By in 01: Paris

Berthillon (wiki) is the kind of place that I expect deservingly to be included in every travel guidebook as a must-go. They make all natural, traditional homemade ice-cream. There’re many other outlets that sell their ice-cream all over the island as well (including one that opens till 2 am).

DSC05088.jpgDSC05090.jpg
The original shop is a close walk to the beautiful park behind Notre Dame. Joan got sorbet Gianduja a l’Orange and Plum

DSC05091.jpg
I got ice cream. Marron Glace and Cannelle. There’re good chunk of chestnut inside, very rich and milky~ Though the two flavors I picked are a bit similar. Very good nonetheless.

Fauchon (Paris: Place de la Madeleine)

At place de la Madeleine (8 eme), the 2 floors chichi gourmet delicatessen Fauchon easily fulfilled many foodies’ unrealistic Parisienne gourmet fantasy ^_^. As soon as we walked in, our eyes were dazzled by extremely pretty delicate gourmet treats. On the left side there’s a bakery and sitting area. There are take out sandwiches, desserts and bake goods for purchase.

Foie gras with cranberry and hazelnut sandwich. Very delicious! I like the high quality zip bag which the sandwich came with. If you cannot finish the sandwich (since the portion is generous) you can put it back into the zip bag and keep it fresh for later in the day, which is what we ended up doing. Also got a canele which is very good, we came back here for another day and bought a bag full and ate them while sight seeing. The dessert Chocolate mousee is also incredibly delicious! So smooth and not too sweet, very unforgettable.

We came back another day to have a light lunch as we had a heavy dinner the night before. Salmon Millefeuille and unfortunately I forgot what the yellow thing is. Both are extremely fresh and refine tasting. Nothing makes me more happy than eating a delicate refine gourmet treats that also can fill you up. They’re about 6 or 7 euro each.

The cakes look amazing.

Salmon with gold flakes! 2nd floor is where they sell their products, like spices, chocolates, cookies, wine, pate, tea leafs, coffee…many many stuffs.

Cute valet guy 🙂 There’s a Fauchon in New York as well. I haven’t been to so I’m not sure if it’s just a store that sell their products or if they have a gourmet deli sections like the Paris one.

Creperie Suzette (Paris: Marais)

//// By in 01: Paris

This Creperie seems like an obvious choice when you almost collapsed from thirst and painful feet when hanging out in the beautiful Marais neighborhood. We stopped by here a few times for these reasons. To our pleasant surprise, their crepes are also very good!

DSC04899.jpgDSC04896.jpg
Marron. The crepes are thin, moist and melty. So good~

DSC04894.jpgDSC06041.jpg
Love the Pollocksque Nutella. We also tried their Apple Cider (far less sweeten than the ones in US).

DSC06048.jpg
The savory crepes are just as good. This one has grounded beef inside, very delicious~~

The space is narrow and tiny. When we had the savory crepe, we were sandwiched between two smokers…^^;; Thankfully later another tourist couple sat next to us and blocked the smoke.
