Galette with quail and Cepe truffle - my friend's appetizer. Gosh it is big as a main.
Turban shell and uni, escargot gratin - my choice. The uni is at the bottom, unfortunately too cooked to taste uni at all. The sea snails are a bit oily but very nice.
060926 055.jpg060926 057.jpg
Assorted Platinum pork(Braised, confit and sausage) - my friend's main.
Roasted pate-stuffed guinea fowl, gratin of endives - my choice. The guinea fowl is soft and tender, a bit light, but the liver pate gives it a rich meaty savoury taste. The sauce is slightly salty and the endive gratin a bit watery though.
060926 064.jpg060926 065.jpg
Peach compote and almond milk sorbet - my friend's dessert.
Banana pudding and salt caramel ice-cream - my choice. This dessert is incredible!! The ice-cream is salty, bitter, and caramel sweet all at once! (*o*)!! Banana pudding with fresh banana slices is nice, the brownish jelly is bitter and has alcohol taste, veeeeeeeeery good~~~
With amuse and petits fours, the dinner course is 5250yen. Also ordered a Kir Royal, and a decanter of red wine to share between 2 people, came to 7000yen each. Actually quite a good deal.
Lunch entry . Damn I just realise I had chicken last time...^^;;

一幸庵 (IKKO-AN)

060926 014.jpg060926 020.jpg
Warabi-mochi and steamed chestnut youkan(sweet bean jelly cake). Seems like a popular Japanese sweet shop. First impression - very expensive. But I was soon blown away by the elegant taste. Warabi-mochi is unlike any I have tried before - soft and light and wobbly jelly texture with strong black sugar flavour, inside is very smooth bean paste. This thing practically melts in your mouth. Not being a big fan of youkan, I find the steamed chestnut youkan absolutely delicious! Not too sweet - that is very important - with big pieces of chestnuts. The bean cake is smooth and soft. But what really impresses me is the matsukaze(松風), which is slightly sticky steamed cake with black sugar and...soy sauce!! The combination of the sweet bean cake and salty sponge...is just perfect!

I had pasta last time and the meat dish other people ordered looked better so went back to try...disappointed again. Simmiered beef saute, estragon sauce - the meat hard and rough and rather tasteless. Self-service bar included potato salad, sweet corn, green salad, tea and coffee. Also came with cold green pea soup(not sweet and quite hard to drink), rice, and a small piece of chocolate mousse which was too sweet(^^;;;). A lot of food for 1050 yen though.

060922 086.jpg060922 096.jpg
A tea room less than 10 mins walk from the busy area of the Ikebukuro station but well hidden in the middle of a quiet residential area. The cabbage roll tastes very homemade...the slice cheese makes it look homemade too. ^^;;; Borsch-like soup is very good, and the big portion of meat inside is filling. Comes with salad, corn potage, rice and coffee. They have a variety of cakes available but apparently only the cheese cake is homemade. Two old gents were chatting at a corner and latter I realised one of them was the owner. Amazing how a short walk can gain you a quiet and slow lunch experience~

I went to this Hokkaido food event last year in Ikebukuro Seibu. This year's ad showed a new uni rice bowl eat-in which looked too good to resist...but stupid me, I jumped into the first eat-in booth I saw and realised too late that this was not the new one I wanted to go! In fact I went to the same eat-in(Ikuratei) last year, argh! ^^;;; But the uni and crab rice bowl was not bad. I went again for Uni-murakami and gosh the special uni don was so expensive...but oh what the hell. The uni was better than Ikuratei definitely, even the rice tasted better. Though still not as sweet and fresh as the very fantastic Hokkaido uni I had in Tsukiji's Sushi-Dai.

Dried tomato and mushroom fettuccine in cream sauce. Came with the dessert: fig and red wine ice-cream, yogurt mousse and almond cake. I was surprised by the high standard for a 1000yen lunch....the pasta and the dessert were both very good. There is no good Italian in Ikebukuro and I am happy to have found this place.

Le Petit Tonneau - Kudan (ル・プティ・トノー@九段下)

060924 002.jpg060924 004.JPG
Dinner course 3800yen, glass champagne 1000yen, and glass wine 600yen. I booked this place a few days before but apparently it was not early enough because we had to sit by the open door which was a bit cold. The table right next to us was a bunch of girls who were making a racket right from the beginning before they even started drinking - it was a birthday party apparently. As a result we had to shout over our tiny table to be heard throughout our entire dinner. Many people were taking photos using flash - which was such a rare sight in Japan. The girls next to us were even taking photos with the French waitor, and my friend and I had to dodge and duck to avoid ending up in the background - I mean we were right behind them. ^^;; The menu for the drinks and cocktails was long and we were asked by the waitors a few times before we could decide on our drinks. The menu for the meal was even longer, we had to choose a cold appetizer, a hot appetizer, a main dish and a dessert, each of which has dozens of options with additional specials of the day etc., but we weren't given much time, the two waitors kept coming back like 3 or 4 times in what I thought was only a short time, asking "Still not ready?", which made us both very panicky and at the end, quite annoyed. We were there so early from like 6pm....I really had no idea what was the rush. From then we decided to only call on the Japanese waitress instead cos she was much more polite.

Assorted delicatessen platter "Petit Tonneau" Style. All very good, and not too salty.
Fresh foie gras sautéed with turnip, orange sauce with honey and spice. An extra charge of 500yen. Not bad, though the foie gras itself was a bit mild tasting and not too creamy, while the sauce was salty.
The waitor came from my friend's behind and said something like "C'est bien desuka?", which made my friend jumped and dumbfounded....she couldn't quite get over it. ^^;;;
060924 018.jpg060924 024.jpg
Traditional Petit Salé of pork served with lentils. The meat was quite soft and surprising not too salty. I thought there would be sauce but it was dry.
Cherry Tarte. Mainly almond cream with a thin slice of cherry on top. Not bad.
3800yen for a 4-course dinner without service charge and tax, is such a great deal. The food is quite good, waitors are all French and many customers are foreigners that makes you feel like you are in Paris or something, the atmosphere is lively if you are in the mood for some noisy merrymaking. ^^;;

Mutton Biryani - mutton dried curry piraf. My previous visit ended up in disappointment but I decided to give it another try...this time round was no good either....-o-;;;; The piraf was so soggy without much curry taste, and there was this obviously-inedible strangely-crunchy thingy in the salad that I panicked to spit out....such popularity in many restaurant review sites though, why why why?!

Prawn tempura rice bowl and chilled udon set. Quite good! The tempura was hot and cripsy. At first I was sitting in the main hall and an ojisan came and started smoking right next to me, I knew it was a little mean but I couldn't stand it and asked the staff to change my seat, and I ended up in a cage-like cubicle with a barred wooden door shut closed...err....

Grilled pork and vegetable rice bowl. Been here twice before and were just okay. I was looking for a place for to eat lunch quickly before the movie started and this was the only place I could think of. Surprisingly the 3rd time was much better, the pork and the vegetables were plenty and hot from the grill, the sauce was just simple balsamico sauce but not bad too. Maybe the quality is better at weekends? The price is slightly higher than weekdays'.

060901 002.jpg060901 004.jpg
One of my friends said this Nepal/Indian restaurant was famous but at lunch time they only do buffets(950yen), which I tried anyway. There were four different kinds of curries(chicken curry was the best), naan and saffron rice, some fried snacks and simple salad, yogurt, chai and coffee. It is really not bad for a buffet lunch. The naan were cut into small pieces so you could take a small piece at a time and wait for new ones coming out hot from the oven when the old ones got cold.
060917 020.jpg060917 022.jpg
Went back for dinner. Nepal steamed dumplings "momo" - just like the chinese "sho lon po" but with lamb meat and thicker skin, quite nice though. The sauce in the middle was quite spicy. Cheese naan, very soft and the melted cheese had onion in it.

Chef's salad. Gosh isn't it massive for 480yen?! A bit too much dressing.
Tandoori sparerib was absolutely wonderful! I couldn't stop munching the bones covered in chilli paste. The meat was not as soft and tender as I had hoped but the hot spicy flavour satisfied my tastebuds so no complaints.

Marinated cactus, with tomato, avocado, cheese, fried pork skin. First time eating cactus, tasted pretty normal like bell pepper~
Octopus saute with chilli and garlic. Quite spicy and strong flavour, the octopus was very soft. Love this dish.
060918 011.jpg060918 019.jpg
CAMARONES AL TEQUILA :
Prawns with tequila cream sauce. This was everyone's favourite. Very sweet and creamy, almost like a French dish. The tortillas came with most of the dishes other than those that came with rice, so we ended up with loads of them. We finished them all though cos they were very good with the sauces.

PUNTAS MEXICANAS :
Seafood soup with prawn, squid and crab. Not as hot as it looked, though rich with spice. Loved it.
Beef fillet simmered with vegetables and chilli. Tasted like a chinese dish!! Not spicy at all. The usual beans on the side were the best I have had so far, in complete paste form and very smooth, a bit salty.

POLLO CON MOLE CIRUELA : 30
Grilled chicken with mole sauce. Finally tried mole sauce!!! :-D!! Supposed to be chocolate and spice? I was expecting some mind-blowing exotic taste but it turned out to be just a very mild and slightly bitter curry...^^;;
The band played around each table(yeah tacky I know but it was fun ^^;;) and you could request songs. All I could think of was "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas", and they played it, which was very nice. I searched my ipod immediately and requested another song but they didn't know it. ^^;;

LECHE FRITA CON TEQUILA :
Crepe with caramel sauce. The crepe tasted a bit old and hard. Not too sweet so easy to eat though.
Custard in flaming tequila. Nice show. ^^;; The aftermath custard tasted pretty normal. We had coffees also. The one with cinnamon and brown sugar was good but quite sweet. Tequila and coffee was very strong, my friend didn't put sugar so a bit bitter for me. I had chocolate and coffee...hmm, for some reason it was not hot and just tasted like the instant hot choc you make before you go to bed. ^^;; Anyway, the atmosphere was great, the food was good overall, 5 of us shared and we drank quite a bit and it came up to 5000yen per person - expensive for Mexican perhaps but considering the location it was pretty reasonable.

Pisces - which apparently is my sign - sounds boring so I picked Taurus: cheese cream, coffee and vanilla ice-cream, banana, sponge cake, and canned fruits at the bottom. Well it tasted like a normal parfait from any family restaurant...the cookies and the pies were a bit old too. Though the second-floor large window view of the busy flow of Ikebukuro is very nice.

Sin Tong Kee (新東記)

060905 028.jpg060905 034.jpg
One of the rare Singaporean restaurants in Tokyo. Laksa - fat and round rice noodles in prawn based soup and coconut milk and chilli paste. Very very good! There were shredded chicken and dried pork and beansprouts underneath. The soup was very spicy and sweet, I drank all of it - very rare for me. The portion was a bit small though, should have ordered the L size.

Medicore, medicore. Expensive too. The appetizer is couscous and ratatouille, avocado paste, tomato and mozzarella; the main is beef and chicken saute in red wine sauce(tastes like yoshoku); the dessert is caramel cake. Why it was so packed with customers is beyond me.

Chicken ramen. I thought simmered egg was not included so I ordered it as extra toppings...ended up with 1.5 portion....^^;; This ramen reminds me so much of Cantonese soup noodles because of the clear chicken soup, the soft and juicy chicken topping instead of pork, and the thin noodles used. Very very good!

Lamb chop, spicy sausage, lamb skewer and roasted chicken. The lamb chop and sausage were so good! I got sooooooo full that I could only eat one piece from the skewer and couldn't even touch the roasted chicken.
Profiterole with vanilla ice-cream and praline cream. Warm chocolate sauce on the side.

Lamb simmered in white wine. Quite good, the lamb is very soft. Lunch doesn't come with anything except some very dry bread though.

Old entries here and here. This place remains my favourite soba place in Tokyo. Anago soba is seasonal menu. Sesame seeds are sprinkled on top, so good so good! A bit expensive though.
