Dinner alone at a Thai restaurant. Fried catfish with chilli, 1800yen. SPY pink Premium wine cooler, 400yen. Plain rice 300yen. Considering the location is obscure and far from Ikebukuro station and the decor isn’t up to much, the menu is priced like a fancy upscale restaurant. The deep-fried catifsh is very dry, not a good choice, but so many different spices are used and the sauce is so full of flavours. Coconut milk is added so it is sweet too. I told the waitress that I can eat very hot food and it came very spicy. I was instantly hooked(to the sauce), had to refrain from stuffing the spice leaves into my mouth. The pink drink is only 4% alcohol, very sweet and artificial coloured/flavoured.
Went back again and ordered the seafood with the same sauce. There are squid, prawn, green pepper, mussel and scallop in it. Just as good as last time. Really a shame that it is so expensive, otherwise I would go back and try other things too~

(Sobadokoro Wamura)
Inaka soba – “country soba”, thick and dark soba made with whole buckwheat.
Tamagoyaki – Japanese egg roll.
Both are absolutely delicious!!! Price is not cheap but the food is really worth it. The soba is the best I have had recently, and the egg roll is to die for.

(Kohmen)
Tan-tan noodles, a version which the sesame seeds are burnt black, topped with black chilli oil. Hmm, quite salty and oily, almost like eating instant noodles. (Mutekiya) right next door is much better, but then it always has a queue.

Cold Stone Creamery
Chestnut Cappuccino: coffee ice-cream chestnut, chocolate fudge and whipped cream. “Love it” size(i.e. medium) plus waffle cup, 630yen.
The first branch of this American ice-cream shop in Japan is at Roppongi Hills. I have tried going for a couple of times but it ALWAYS has a long queue, even during odd hours like weekdays afternoon, or in winter(the waiting and eating space is outside). So I was very happy to find out that the second branch(in central Tokyo) is inside a mall at Ikebukuro. Happier still that there was no one waiting when I went during weekday lunchtime! The ice-cream is chopped and mixed with the ingredients on a cold marble stone. The much-hyped ice-cream didn’t disappoint, very smooth and rich, a bit sweet in Japanese standard, but okay for me.

(Suzuriya)
(Suzuriya Minami Ikebukuro-ten)
Pork udon(hot). Udon is not bad though the pork meat is hard. For a simple bowl of udon, I did have to wait for a very long time even though the restaurant was pretty empty. This udon place has two restaurants which are only a few minutes walk from each other.
(Suzuriya Honten)
Honten has better seating and better service. Had egg roll and tempura zaru udon. The egg roll and the udon are so-so, but the tempura is not bad – huge slices of aubergine, pumpkin, shishitou(small green pepper), prawn and bell pepper, all freshly fried. Very thick flour coating but it is crispy. 840yen for a tempura udon is very cheap too.
Beef bukkake udon and takikomi rice, 900yen. I thought bukkake udon usually has only a bit of sweet soya sauce to mix with the udon, but this one basically is soup udon, and since I ordered cold version, the soup was cold….I was chilled to the bones eating it. And the beef was too hard and tasteless and I left most of it. The noodles itself was okay though. And the portion is massive. I guess I ordered the wrong thing for the weather. The takikomi rice was good.
Mr. Rosa (ミスター・ロサ)
On a stick: fatty pork, pork with shiso and cheese. Oden: cabbage roll, chicken meatball, and radish. All 150yen each. First time going to this kind of drinking place by myself at night…circled the shop three times before summoning enough courage to go in. ^^;; But once you are in, have a drink, you do get quite relaxed because even though 100% of the customers are salarymen, nobody really cares about you and you can just read, or watch TV, and eat quietly. I should do this more often~

Le Trianon (トリアノン)
Seafood cream sauce spaghetti, salad and drink bar included, 1300yen. It is on the 59th floor of Prince hotel, nice highrise view, can even see the skyscrapers in Shinjuku. The menu is mainly yoshoku, hamburger and pork cutlet and steak etc. The spaghetti I had was not great, though I really just came for the view…
