La Luna Ristorante (Larchmont village)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire

DSC03087.jpgI’ve been wanting to write about this cozy neighorhood Italian restaurant on Larchmont Village for awhile, but everytime the pictures came out blurry. ^^;; We love to drop by here for a simple meal at night, especially to satisfy our sudden pasta cravings. The menu are simple yet more interesting than typical traditional offerings (no plain tomato sauce meatball spaghetti).

Homemade Pasta with Lobster Tail, Shrimp, Fresh tomato & Cream. Fresh, dense with lobster flavor, not heavy nor creamy…the combinations are irresistable. Very delicious.

Homemade pasta with Porcini, Champignon Shitake & Oyster mushrooms in White Wine sauce. I order this same dish over and over again because it’s simply too yum. Simple yet so flavorful. Light and healthy tasting too.

Update Dec 2007: Sadly they closed forever due to contract, it was a good fight though.

Boule (La Cienega)

//// By in 09: Weho

Finally made it to Boule, the gorgeous chocolatier/boutique on La Cienaga.

Macarons as floral arrangement~ We’re surrounded by all these fine pastries and sweets (they have canele!).
DSC03075.jpgDSC03085.jpg
Persia: Pistachio bavoroise, sour cherry gelee, pistachio dacquoise. Simple exquisite! The sugared flower petal can be eaten~ Not too sweet; the mousse is airy and got a florally pistachio aroma to it.
DSC03079.jpgDSC03081.jpg
Boule Cake: Devil’s Food Cake, Paillete Feullantine Noisette, Montmorency Cherry Jam. The surface is so impossibly shiny. The chocolate and mousse are all fine and silky. Every bite is so good (never too sweet) and too wonderful to enjoy.

Opus Restaurant (Wilshire)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire, Favorite Food Entries

The update is a bit slow this past week because I had a computer crash scare. I finally got everything recovered and backup.

Remember the Baco night? We went back to try Opus Restaurant‘s very tempting $30 three course tasting menu. Just like as David said, we got extra courses that rounded up at 7 in total.
DSC03042.jpgDSC03041.jpg
First came the same delicious Amuse Bouche I got last time, made with celery root puree, yam on top layer, cypress seed on top.

DSC03047.jpgDSC03049.jpg
Then raw fish course: Yellowtail Tartar with Lobster Tempura, and the Egg course: Honey topped sour cream foam with Bacon pieces, bottom with gradual gradient from raw to cook yolk. This is really delightful to eat. I never knew how well honey goes with egg and bacon.

DSC03051.jpg
Soup course: Hazelnut Soup with Foie Gras and Scallop: easily the highlight of the entire course. The soup is foamy and fine, with lots of silky foie gras and scallop in every scoop. It’s an amazing balance of the hazelnut sweetness and savory *_*

DSC03058.jpg
Fish Course. But the real highlight is the underlayer of Crosne, a rare root that’s known as Chinese Artichoke (草石蚕) grew in Northern China, was introduced to France in 19th Century. Japan called it Chorogi They looked a bit like mini silkworm (^^;;), the Chinese name of the root literally means “Grass Pertified Silkworm”. But they got awesome nutty texture. Such a rare find. The chef told us he got it from a farm in Santa Barbara.

DSC03062.jpg
Protein course: Milk Fed Baby Chicken. Initially it was a bit of a ‘huh? chicken’ after all the wonderful surprises before, but these are special chicken indeed. The chef told us he acquired 20 of these from an organic farm in NY and they’re special of the night (all gone). They’re amazingly tender and got a very unique young flavor.

DSC03063.jpg
Dessert. No surprise but it’s a good ending note nonethless.

3 (+4!) delicious courses full of surprises for only $30 (sans wine pairing, which will be additional $25)!?? It is really too good to be true, but it IS for real. Good service, beautiful interior. Go experience it yourself. 😀

L’Artisan Du Chocolat (3rd/Virgil)

//// By in 05: Silver Lake + Echo Park

top row: Tomato, Raspberry
bottom row: Olive, 72% Cocoa, Jasmine. Not in picture: Kumquat

Not sure what’s the name of the neighbourhood inbetween mid-wilshire and Silver lake/Echo park, but I would never have guess there dwell a cute gourmet chocolate shop! Located on 1st street (cross stree: Virgil) with bright red Parisian exterior, L’Artisan Du Chocolat seems the kind of fine gourmet shop that should be in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood. The very friendly owner/chocolatier lady patiently tell us what each of the chocolates in the display case are. All the chocoates are handmade. There’s a wide range of flavors, from more standard ones like green tea, ginger, hazelnut…etc to interesting and unique flavors such as chili, tomato, olives…etc. My immediate impression was: this is the chocoate version of Scoop! The owner/Chocolatier was trained in Paris and you can just tell that she is very passionate about the art. Jon and I tried the chocolate right away at a nearby cafe. The texture is incredibly smooth. Flavors are very rich, especially the Jasmine one, which was my most favorite of the bunch. I love the olive one too (yes it works! with a touch a savory). There are little pieces of olives inside. The tomato one is a bit too subtle though. 72% Cocoa is really rich and dense, good thing we saved that for last.

You can buy their chocolates online too (valentine’s *wink wink*). Can’t wait to go back to try others.

Ruen Pair (Thai Town)

//// By in 04: Los Feliz

My favorite place at Thai Town was closed down for rennovation for 3 months, and it’s finally re-opened!
DSC03031.jpg
Slightly bigger now. The Crab Cake with Plum sauce is so so, I can only taste/see the pork meat. ^^;;
DSC03025.jpg
Combination Salad, this so-called salad is a guilty indulgence of all these appertizers with very particularly strong taste and aroma and combine them together: Salted eggs (made from chicken so not as nicely texture as duck eggs), Thousand year eggs, Chinese sausage, onion and salty cabbage plus chilli lime sauce.
DSC03029.jpg
A soup noodle I forgot name which has silky smooth Pig’s Blood, Fried Tofu, cow intestines and other parts. I wasn’t crazy about the roll up thick rice noodle, too mushy. Their pig’s blood are good, I’m going to order that next time (or any dish using it as star item).
