Pizzeria Mozza (highland)

//// By in 07: Mid-Wilshire, Favorite Food Entries

DSCN9153.jpgSquash blossoms with burrata & tomato, if not the best, possibly the tastiest pizza I’ve ever had? The burrata is so fresh and melt in your mouth.

Funghi misti, Fontina, Taleggio & thyme, 2nd tastest pizza so far?

Prosciutto di Parma, Rucola & mozzarella and Fennel Sausage, panna & red onion. Their taste is up there too.

It’s clear how much I love these pizzas ^^;; Foodies in LA been hyped about this pizza place for awhile and it finally opened on Tuesday (11/17)! From Famous celebrity chef Mario Batali (owner of NY’s Babbo, i.e. the Italian chef on Iron Chef USA) and Nancy Silverton (owner/pastry chef of Campanile and owner/baker of La Brea Bakery), a likely equation to offer the best pizza in LA? Since it’s brand new opening, the place is crowded and table reservation for dinner time is tough. I called on Wednesday to try to get a table for 9 people on a Thursdays night and the only opening is 11:30 pm and apparently they don’t take reservation for more than 6 people. We went for lunch instead at around 2:00 pm and it’s about 90% full, not crazily crowded.

I love the crust very much, it’s crispy and soft and rich. Of the 4 pizzas we got I love the burrata one the most as I mention up there. The mushroom and prosuitto ones are both fantastic too. I didn’t try the sausage one, the person who had it said it’s pretty good but not that great. He prefers Alessi‘s pizza. Mozza is located at where Alessi used to be at. It was a great Italian place too (read my old entry on it). I heard that the restaurant before Alessi was a really good Italian place as well. So it’s been quite a “cursed” location as these two restaurants were both good quality but couldn’t stay in business. Let’s hope Mozza would break the spell.

Palms Thai (Thai Town)

//// By in 08: Hollywood

DSC02076.jpgPalms Thai is a very popular hang out. It’s the home of the famous (?) Thai Elvis ^^;; (he performed Elvis songs every night after 9pm). They moved to a much larger space recently. Unlike before, they didn’t turn off the light nor turn on the disco ball. In such a large space with lights on, Thai Elvis seemed faded in the background and a lot less Vegas kitsch. There were 21 people in our party, on a busy Friday night we got our table in about 45 minutes…not bad!

Here’re some of the feast for 21 of us (missing some and some have double orders).
DSC02067.jpgDSC02070.jpg
Fried Tofu (Good!) and B.B.Q. Beef
DSC02062.jpgDSC02075.jpg
Spicy Noodle Soup and Glass Noodle, I like these the most out of all dishes.
DSC02065.jpgDSC02064.jpg
Beef Satay and B.B.Q. Beef With Lime And Garlic (not as flavored as it sounds)
DSC02072.jpgDSC02066.jpg
Green Curry and Shrimp Cake.
DSC02068.jpgDSC02074.jpg
Combination Seafood With Chili Paste (hmm…so so) and Pad Thai.

Ike Sushi (Hollywood)

//// By in 08: Hollywood, Favorite Food Entries

Last time we got an omakase (chef’s choice) for four people at Ike Sushi, we tried again for two people, we have wonderful surprises.
DSC02052.jpg
This is simply the best Uni I’ve ever had. There were a generous amount (so full), the uni color has an orange reddish tone (compare to the usual pale yellow). It’s incredibly rich and creamy. He also cut a crane out of the leaf…so pretty~

Everything is great. Though I suspect the oysters were ordered by the couple sitting next to us, they were mistakenly given to us (the waitresses panicked when they realized that). ^^;;; The toro was really good too.

We also ordered the Grill Octopus again, it’s just way too good, a MUST in Ike. Including tips, it was $60 per person.

Metro Cafe (Culver City)

//// By in 13: Culver City

DSC02058.jpg
Mushroom Pasta in a light cream sauce with many kinds of fresh mushroom…so good!
DSC02054.jpgDSC02055.jpg
The bread comes with a yummy bell-pepper dippings.

Recommended by Triplecreme, I think this is the right one as there are dozen Metro Cafe (same name) in LA. This one is actually a Serbian restaurant, I should have try some of their specialties (but I can’t resist mushroom pasta ^^;;). They also have a long breakfast menu. It’s located right next to a Travel Lodge.

Kum Da Rae noodle restaurant

Jon and I walk around the Korea town neighbourhood one night and found this very downhome place that’s walking distance from my condo. The space is small and its downhome-ness is enchanced by the TV monitor on the wall that’s playing old 90s Korean soap drama. The owner lady and waitress were both very friendly to us even their English is not so good. I got the rice cake and mandoo soup and Jon got the Kimchi fried rice (there’s suppose to be an egg on the top, it came later after the picture was taken). Both are Korean comfort food at its best. All the sides are good. There’re also causal Japanese dishes on the menu too (ex: soba, udon, curry rice), I wonder if they’re good. It’s definitely a good causal cheap eat place to go back to.

Update 2008: sadly it’s closed. It’s now some Korean owned Pho place…
