Veselka (NYC: East Village)

//// By in 03: NYC

DSC08798.jpgWith lunch and dinner all stuck in office, the only chance to eat out is…breakfast. Sacrifice a little sleep, get up early. 😀 Eating breakfast at neighborhood cafe with friends is what I considered a good life. This Ukranian 24 hour diner Veselka is a popular spot at East Village. I met up with my coworker and her friends for breakfast.

Pierogi: handmade Ukranian dumplings. I chose them fried, with 2 kinds of stuffings (chose from 7): potatoe and Sauerkraut + mushroom. The later one is better, so yum. Very oily though. Later I realized I could have chosen all 7 stuffings, one of each. Ah dummy… The sauce is Apple sauce and sour cream.

Omelettes. The sausage is great. The other one has crazy heavy cream cheese in it, soooo fattening! There is another 24 hours Eastern European diner cafe nearby (Polish). I just love this neighborhood.

Clinton St. Baking Company (NYC: LES)

//// By in 03: NYC

I’m at the final stage of the project and it’s hellish busy. I’ve been staying late every night and suffered bad delivery food for the entire week (plus weekends). Miraclously Saturday night was an early night and I got recommendation of this cafe Clinton St. Baking Company from Donny.

Very good scones and Apple Parsnip Puree soup, buttery with a touch a sour fruity flavor, so nice.
DSC08792.jpgCod with Risotto, very delicious, the fish just melt in your mouth with light lasting golden butter aftertaste. It was 9:00pm when I arrived and the place is just overcrowded. They can fit me right away since I’m by myself. This place is best known for breakfast and their pancakes. I heard from my friend that people lined up every morning. They must be so famous that there’s pancakes on their dinner menu. Too bad I don’t have much time left in NY and won’t be able to try. 🙁 I love the Lower East Side (Psyop got the golden location).

Mandoo (NYC: Midtown)

There’s a Koreatown near Madison Square (the scale is no way near the epic size of the LA one), about 7 blocks from my office. It is rather neat block with lots of nice polish and slick Korean restaurant. There’s this very good dumpling house with a front window view of the kitchen. The green = veggie, white = pork and pink = seafood. All VERY VERY good! Very satisfied. 😀 My friend told me that awhile ago some copy cat open a dumpling house on the same block with the same open front window kitchen…but the quality is so bad that it closed down very soon. A bit walking for lunch hour but this sure beats the deli fodo I’m so sick of.

Soba-Ya (NYC: East Village)

//// By in 03: NYC

DSC08755.jpgPromise, the last Japanese food I’d have in my remaining days at NYC. My friend (who is Japanese btw, maybe that’s why…^^;;) highly recommend this place so I have to try, even though I’m not a fan of soba. The soba are very good indeed, the best I’ve had, I’m very impressed. It’s $12 for a noodle bowl, more than I thought. There were 2 very confused ‘gaijin’ next to me. After a long studying of the menu, they ordered ‘shu-mai’ and sushi rolls. The waiter got fed up and tried to educate them: “actually, we’re a noodle house, we make our own noodle, have you seen our full menu yet (point at the noodle page)?” Rather rude but…I can feel both parties feeling a bit insulted. The two gaijin must feel unworldly hence change to whatever soba the waiter recommended. The woman was all in denial “i can’t eat this big bowl blah blah” when it came. My friend said she saw Sofia Coppola eating here before and was making our with her bf the whole time…
