Lemonade (Abbot Kinney)

//// By in 15: Venice

Lemonade is a gourmet cafeteria that’s popping up around LA’s (the yuppie area) recently. The Abbot Kinney location is my frequent lunch spot as it’s close to my work place. This place sounds great in concept already, but it’s the varieties and quality that’d

Lemonade

The moment you walk in, you’d be lining up along rows of colorful, overwhelming selections of salad and sides. 1st timer might get intimidated. What they didn’t specified on the chalk board is that you can split a 1 portion order into two halves (so you can try different flavors).

LemonadeLemonade

The order line goes in this order: Salad -> Sandwich -> Entree -> Soup + Bread -> Dessert -> Drinks. It’s a little odd that they put the soup toward the end, decision wise. Though it makes sense that people don’t have to carry their soup all the way down the order line.

Here’s a small sample of what Joan and I have ate:

Lemonade

The white pearly sides is the Israeli Couscous, Wild Mushrooms, Parmesan, Truffle Vinaigrette. After multiple visits, it has become my absolute must-get. Brussels Sprouts, Parmesan Cheese, Balsamic can taste very vinegar-y and strong. The entree is Lemongrass Chicken with Ginger and Orange, tasty though the chicken is cooked as tender as I like (plus I prefer dark meat).

Lemonade

Seared Ahi Tuna, Whole Citrus Ponzu with a half/half sides of Cauliflower, Golden Raisins, Almonds, Curry.  Braised Cabbage, Apple, Goat Cheese. This is around $10.

Lemonade

Beets, Pickled Red Onions, Hazelnut Vinaigrette. A very yummy Spaghetti Salad and quinoa of the day.

Lemonade

The couscous again, and the Quinoa, Cucumber, Radish, Ginger Orange Vinaigrette. Butternut Squash soup with a bread (toasted after you made the order).

Everything on their menu sounds interesting and taste different, you’d feel like a kid in a candy store. Other than their long menu items, there’re daily specials as well. They also have interesting drinks, such as the cooling cucumber mint lemonade.

Church and State (Downtown)

//// By in 06: Downtown LA

Church and State
Haven’t gone to a fancy dinner for awhile so we decided to treat ourselves on New Year’s eve. The popular downtown French bistro Church and State had a special 5 courses menu for $60. We’ve always wanted to check this place out so it is a good opportunity. Surrounded by warehouses and located at the floor ground of Biscuit Loft, the restaurant has an un-LA vibe to it. I love the interior and the vibe a lot.

Church and State
I was glad to see they have an adventurous cocktail list. Freda got the Pisco Sour – Bar Sol Pisco, Lime, Egg White, Bitters. Her associate got the Sazerac which contains rye whiskey and absinthe. It was quite potent. My husband and I got the wine pairing, which was an extra 30 bucks.

Church and StateChurch and State

Good bread and amuse bouche.

Church and State
Huitres – Barron point oyster with lime gelee
A bracing bite of the sea. The shell set upon a small pyramid of sea salt.

Church and State
endives et cressons – watercress, fuji apple, bleu des causses, walnuts, viaigrette
A variation of the classic combination of apple walnut salad. Crispness from the apple balanced well with earthy bitterness of the endives. May be a bit too much blue cheese.

Church and State
Noix St. Jaques avec Foie Gras – sauteed bay scallops, sunchokes, foie gras, port wine reduction
Each bite was a surprise with this dish. The scallops, sunchokes, and foie gras were cut into morsels of roughly equal size and they were covered in a rich port wine reduction. You never knew what you were going to bite into. I’ve never had sunchokes before, their texture felt like a potato to me.

Church and State

boeuf Entrecote – roasted ribeye cap, hen of the wood mushrooms, parsnip puree, stuffed lady apples, truffle jus
The beef was a little over cook (Jon asked for medium rare) but overall it’s a hearty and tasty dish.

Church and State

Loup de mer poelee – sauteed loup de mer, salsify, leeks, shitake mushrooms, lemongrass veloute
I was getting pretty full by then (those foie gras and scallops were pretty rich), I was glad I chose fish as my main course. The sauce was light and flavorful.

Church and StateChurch and State
Croque en bouche and Buche de noel
The Croque en bouche taste a bit stale so I like the buche de noel more.

Because they tried to accomadate so many people,  the execution felt a bit uneven in places. But overall the dinner was pretty satisfying and we had a good time.

Shanghai Bamboo House (Monrovia)

//// By in 01: San Gabriel

Long time ago I blogged about this neighborhood Shanghai restaurant at Temple City called Lulu (here and here). They revamped themselves under a new name called Bamboo House. The food is still good and it’s been a regular favorite of mine. However it got forced out later by a bank who wanted their location, I was so bummed! They finally reopened as Shanghai Bamboo House, tucked away at the even more sleepy suburb mall in the city of Monrovia.

Initially I worried about their traffic: it’s not close enough to the Chinese enclave. There’s no vibrant Chinese supermarket plaza nearby, nor the Arcadia Sinbala/Din Tai Fung spill over. My worries seems unfound as we walked in: there’s a wait for a table.

Dongbo Pork invented by and named after a famous Chinese poet, this delicious braised pork belly is a Hangzhou’s signature dish. The grease is cooked away from the fat, and gave the pork a gelatin-like, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The meat is unbelievably tender and deeply flavored. The sticky rice round it off with a wonderful texture. Even though there’s a lot of fat in it, I could finish this all by myself because it’s so good!

Shanghai Bamboo House

Xiao Lung Bao. So good and so juicy~ They slide into your mouth smoothly. and the broth is delicious.

Shanghai Bamboo House

Fish with sea moss. Lightly fried fish with sea moss, it’s not greasy, light and very good

Shanghai Bamboo House

Fish Head Casserole. Yummy, flavorful but light soup.

I’m glad to see the return of this place, and it’s just as good as before.

Overland Cafe (Palms)

//// By in 11: West LA

I always drove by Overland Cafe without giving it much thought, until my friend told me about their specialty: un limited champagne Sunday Brunch. It is $4.99 per person with an order of entree.

Overland Cafe

The lively cafe has a feel good, humble vibe that makes it a good neighborhood joint. The walls showcase art works from local artists.

Overland CafeOverland Cafe

As for the unlimited champagne, it is really…unlimited…for two hours. We got orange juice to make mimosa.

Overland Cafe

Krabbycake Benedict: Two Crispy Krabbycakes topped with grilled tomatoes, poached eggs and Hollandaise. Very yummy! The crispy krabbycakes added so much to the texture. The hollandaise sauce is light and not overwhelming. The potatoes on the side are firm and tasty. I wasn’t left with a greasy feeling afterward.

Overland Cafe

Belgian Waffle. Pretty and good!

Overland Cafe

Shrimp, Scallion & Guacamole Omelet Garnished with Hollandaise sauce. Simple and well made.

Being a light weight, I was pretty drunk by the end of it. I really enjoy the casual vibe and the breakfast food. It got me curious about their lunch and dinner menu.

Earl’s Gourmet Grub (Mar Vista)

//// By in 11: West LA, Favorite Food Entries

Happy New Year! Now that the holiday’s over, we can finally catch up with our old entries.

When I enjoyed a place, I tend to say “I can’t wait to go back to try the other stuffs on the menu,” I do mean them even though I might not blog it again. I went back to Mar Vista’s gourmet sandwich joint Earl’s Gourmet Grub numerous times since then and it just gets better. I tried their lunch menu (hot sandwich) and I’ve found that one STAR item that you’d go back for again and again.

Earl's Gourmet Grub

This is it, the Choppy Joe! Rice-Cooker Ginger Chicken, Bean Sprouts, Celery, Peanut & Black Strap Molasses Gravy, Wun Tun Chips on Sesame Burger Bun $9.25  This is simply DELICIOUS! The bean sprout and peanut sauce gave an asian flavor that taste unpredictable with the brioche-ish burger bun. The whole plate is well balanced and interesting, it’s amazing!

Earl's Gourmet Grub

HEARTICHOKE: Marinated Artichoke, Hearts of Palm-Pickled Red Onion Hash, Artichoke-Jalapeno Spread, Chevre, Mache on Pain de Mie $8.7  One of the vegetarian choice on the menu. I’m not too crazy about it but it’s a good light, veggie sandwich for those who feel like it.

Earl's Gourmet Grub

PIG-N-FIG: Prosciutto di Parma, Verde Capra Blue Cheese, Fig Hash, Arugula, Aioli on 3 Season Bread $9.25  A bold flavor one obviously that is so satisfying.

They also have various daily specials, baked goods, and even Sunday omelette Jazz brunch (with live Jazz band)!  It’s such a great neighborhood gem.
