Random Tea Room and Curiosity Shop (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia

We found this lovely tea room Random Tea Room and Curiosity Shop while strolling the Northern Liberties neighborhood.

The small interior is intimate: eclectic vintage furnitures (for sale too!) with new age music. You feel like being tuck away at a quiet corner where no one would bother you.

The pastry and tea wares are displayed as if you’re in someone’s living room. There’s also some assorted vintage goods for sale too.

Ice Passion Fruit Tea and Chai. Very good. It is a lovely space to hang out, even by yourself. You can also buy tea leafs (yerba mate).

Tartes (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia

Tartes is a bakery in a pink little shack with a walked-up window at Old city. As their name suggests, they made gorgeous looking tarts plus other baked goods as well (brownies, cookies and cupcakes).

When you walked up to their window, you can see their kitchen clearly.

The window displays looked absolutely mouth-watering.

I got the Blackberry Almond. Wow this is absolutely divine! They used whole fruits and the crust is so light and fresh. The texture inside is this wonderful marzipan-like soft, delicate chewiness. The blackberries are pure tasting (no additional sugar) hence the the flavor is very natural, very fresh.

Apricot Pistachio. Also very good, though I found the apricot a little too sour for my likings.

I also tried their Red Velvet Cupcake (cream cheese toppings) which was very good as well. I wouldn’t mind walking there as a destination everyday just to get some yummy, fresh baked goodies.

Flying Monkey (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia

Also on the pretty Locust street is the cupcake teahouse Flying Monkey. They have a shop at the Reading Terminal Market as well.

The space is too lovely~ The walls are decorated with paintings of monkey interpreted by different artists. I love the mismatch pillows.

You can select tea from the jars. They played good indie rock as well. They only use vanilla and chocolate cake base, while they have rather traditional topping flavors. Though I came upon an unusual one one time:

Champagne. The cake is moist and light, and the cream is not too sweet (that I like). Though I can only taste a bit of champagne…

I came back here with Joan when we were exhausted by the heat. Buttercream Chocolate and Strawberry. The chocolate cake bottom of the strawberry was a bit dry, while the vanilla cake was perfectly moist.

It’s a great neighborhood gem, and a lovely stop for those of us who were worn out by the heat and walking. I also met a fellow food blogger who was taking photos of his cupcakes.

Garces Trading Co. (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia, Favorite Food Entries

Joan flew over one weekend to join me at Philly. Since I was underwhelmed by Amada, I wanted her to experience the other outpost of the Garces Restaurant Group: Garces Trading Co. It’s located in the gayborhood – on the pretty, residential Locust street. While the other Garces’ establishments are tapas/wine bar, this one is a restaurant + market inside a bright open space (a big plus for me). The fake European street sign on the walls gave off the illusion of being at a European market.

Inside there’s a cheese store, bakery, wine shop, olive oil/balsamic vinegar bar…it’s a foodie heaven. You can pick up bottles of wine before/after sitting down. Since Joan and I aren’t big drinkers, we got a half bottle. It was an excellent Spanish red and only cost $4.99!

The dining area is in the center. Every table gets complimentary amuse bouche. We have the artichoke with olive oil, it was simple but yummy.

I love the bread box! Very good sourdough too.

Graces Trading co.

They have a very good selections of cheese and charcuterie. You can add a condiment for $1 each and they all sounded wonderful (hard to choose). I got the Truffle Lavender Honey and Roasted Garlic Dulce de Leche.

It’s a good sign (or bad?) when I wanted to order everything on the menu. The ingredients and combination sounded familiar yet also unusual.

Graces Trading co.

Lyonnaise Duck Salad:  duck confit, poached egg, bacon lardons with mustard vinaigrette 11.00 Yum yum yum! The duck was very flavored and tender. the whole combination just works so well~

Graces Trading co.

Being somewhat obsessed with mushroom, we have to order the Funghi Pizza: maitakes, royal rumpets, taleggio, black truffles 13. It’s one of the best pizza I’ve ever had! The cheese was light and melty, and the seasonings are minimal but very effective. The texture, aroma and flavors are so well rounded that every bite is an absolute joy.

Graces Trading co.

Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu with Sunchoke Puree, Piave vecchio. Fresh pasta with delicious sauce…it’s a good, near perfect dish except for the peas that I’m never crazy about.

In one night we sampled from the cheese, salad, pizza and pasta categories, and there’s still the grill, deep dish pies and the daily ‘Plat du jour’ to try. Friday’s paella seems to be the favorite. They also have a chef’s tasting menu for $40. I love this place a lot, way more than I did for Amada. The food are simple and casual, but they’re made with good quality ingredients.

Morimoto (Philadelphia)

//// By in 11: Philadelphia, Favorite Food Entries

I went back to Philly for the 3rd time for the last few weeks. This time I finally tried Morimoto, a restaurant from the famouos Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto. The menu is creative Japanese. It’s famous for its omakase (multi-course tasting menu) that’s priced at 80, 120 and up. I was only there for a quick dinner and lunch.

Morimoto

The interior is stunning. Big, open and beautifully illuminated space with organic lines. Though have to say I found the design to be a bit dated looking. The stationary lamp on each table is a bit in the way too.

MorimotoMorimoto

The door front is very minimal, but it stands out among the historic buildings. I got Aji and Madai (only came in one), fresh and good. Though given how high end the place is, the wasabi was not the real kind I was expecting. I missed LA at that moment…

Morimoto

White Fish Carpaccio yuzu soy, hot oil, and mitsuba leaf. Beautifully plated, though the dressing was a bit predictable tasting. The center piece is an edible soy paper.

Morimoto

Soba carbonara with bacon, edamame, scallops, parmesan and truffle 14 I got the appetizer size and it’s filling for one already. It is DELICIOUS!  Soba worked surprisingly nice with the thin carbonara sauce. The sweetness of scallops and the texture of edamame compliment the flavor so well. I love it so much that I tried to cook it myself following the recipe…but my first attempt was a failure.

Black sesame Mousse cake – goma mousse, sea salt mousse, flourless chocolate cake, dark chocolate ganache. Wow…this is my ideal dessert comes true as I tend to have a strange obsession with all things black sesame. Both the mousse and the dark chocolate ganache was so smooth and silky…it is divine! The sea salt mousse help resetting the palate. And even better, it was topped with a black sesame macaron.

I came back for lunch when Joan visited me one weekend:
Morimoto

Rice burger with kobe beef. It’s the high end gourmet version of the Mos Rice Burger. Wow…it is SO good. The kobe beef are unbelievably and unforgettably tender and flavorful.

I tend to enjoy the high end youshoku (Rice Burger, Soba Carbonara) more. Just these two alone made me wanting to come back again and again. As for the Omakase…someday…someday…
